There's a few ways to do it
>Not my problem: tape over the hole and paint over the paint
>It just works: buy a drywall patch kit
>Too much free time: cut a square around the hole at a 45 degree bevel, cut a matching piece and plug it in, slap some fast setting mud over it, sand, paint and lick the fixed area for good luck

>45 degree bevel
Just put a paintstick through the hole, screw that into the good sheet as a bracer, then fit your plug and screw that on. Then mud your screwheads and seam.

How big is the hole? .22 hole can be patch with a goo from a tube. They have it at the hardware store. 12 ga. would will need to cut a around it to make is a clean hole. Buy a 2'x2' piece of drywall, cut a patch to replace hole in the wall. If a stud is in the hole, put in patch with a drywall screw. Use patching compound from the tube to fill the gaps. Sand and paint. If no stud in the hole, get a small piece of wood that is longer than the hole is wide. use it as backing with a couple of drywall screws to hold it in place. Place patch in hole and screw it to wood backing piece. Goo, sand, and paint.

That works well but seems unnecessary for a small patch

Dry wall patch, if you're in a real hurry and just need to hide the problem as opposed to fixing the problem you can stuff it with TP depending on caliber or cut out a slightly larger piece of printer paper, scotch tape it, and dim the lights

True. More a method for fists, feet, heads, doorknobs, etc.
