Will it ultimately be a cult hit like the AR-15?
>>64761900People who shit on it today would have bitched about the ar15 in Vietnam. It'll be standardized, emulated and the next rung on the ladder for civilian arms to copy and produce for the next 30 years. Who fucking cares if any of us actually like it or not?
Depends on what combat it sees and what movies are made about that combat. The AR is only so popular because of LARPing.
>>64761900No. The ARs merits were recognized immediately, southeast asian countries and foreign SOF units bought it immediately, long before the air force gave it a chance. Nobody gives a shit about the M7.
>>64761909I wonder if it has any major issues with its design that would need to be changed. The AR-15 was radical, but in the end they really only added the chrome barrel and forward assist.
>>64761900lol, lmao even
>>64761916Why are they fucking with it then? Why not just get someone to standardize the AR-10?
>>64761936The chinks have rolled out plates that stop 7.62 so by going for something with pen they force the chinks to either replace several million brand new plates or accept the L.
>>64761936sunk cost. The NGSW really goes back to the LSAT, so the program is nearly 20 years old.
>>64761958interesting. makes sense
>>64761919Theoretically it's not a complete product until it's stopped being produced by anyone. There's no rule saying it can't be improved later on as missions and capabilities change. At best it creates the standard for future firefights, at worst it's forward thinking.
>>64761958>so by going for something with penthe real L is that the spear cant pen the new plates any better than m993 or M995
>>64761978Source?
>>64761900The AR15 was basically a hit right away, it got glowing praise in Project Agile and it was widely liked by others. Then they fucked up on the powder on adoption of the M16, then they did the M16A1 and it was great.>>64761909Nigger, it's a fucking reversal of the lessons of the M14 and M16, instead of advancing forwards, it's effectively regressing back to the M14 stage.Even if you solve all the quality problems, the XM7 is still fundamentally an obsolescent concept with a bad twist.>>64761916Piston is a mistake.6.8mm is a colossal mistake.80000psi chamber pressure is a ridiculous mistake on top of that.>>64761936Sunk costs and palm greasing.
>>64761985He's a dunning-kruger. The 6.8 gen purpose round XM1186 is slightly better than M80A1 and is a notch below Level IV. The tungsten core XM1184 is slightly better than M1158, the new 7.62x51 AP to replace M993.M995 doesn't pop most Level IV plates reliably unless they're made of boron carbide and it's coming out at 3,400ft/s. XM1184 will likely defeat most Level IV plates at close range.
>>64761958Wow, Lv.4 plates, that must make them absolutely unstoppable, it's not like you need to still worry about getting shot!
>>64761997bitch, the M14 and the M16 made it to the 21st century with nothing but body kits and some fancy optics and they've stacked bodies just fine
>>64762006Thanks anon.>>64762011It's not about walking around like Arnie tanking hits it's about minimizing loses in the CQB that is jungle and cities.
>>64761900You know I don't really get the complaints about it being ugly Looks cool to me
>>64761900>>64761909NFA barrel length, NFA suppressor and super special ammo no one can get.
>>64761913>The AR is only so popular because of LARPing.ARs are popular because they are objectively the best centerfire target rifles for the money
>>64762033It's economy of scale, they got popular thanks to LARPers and those sales drove down production costs to the point they are a great cheap option.
>>64762039it's one of if not the most accurate semi auto designs
>>64761936It's just an overgrown AR-18 with a really stupid ammo spec. The fact that Sig got so much money for it should be a bigger scandal.
>>64762039They got popular because of the end of the AWB ban, a million GWOT vets coming home, and Call of Duty.
>>64762039It got popular thanks to the ability to make unlicensed copies and it's cheaper (as a small shop) to machine aluminum than machine, stamp, or cast steel. The modularity of the platform also allowed it to be shoehorned into every niche.
>>64762015The AP argument is sadly still a losing battle. If you're in the know, the Chinese company Shandong Yasai Ceramic Technology Co. has a economical means of producing titanium diboride-doped Silicon Carbide, the type of ceramic used in the Adept Colossus, Archon, Gilliam 9969, and some forms of Hexar / Dragonskin. They're likely the actual OEM of the ceramics for all the above armor. This ceramic is excellent for beating tungsten penetrators, better than normal Silicon Carbide, and not terribly heavier. It would not be difficult for China to develop an XM1184-proofed plate, but they have other, greater priorities.
When will we expect the Army to standardize on one AR-10 design when the Sig gets booted?
>>64762013The M14 was dramatically inferior at doing this to the M16, which is why the M16 replaced the M14.>>64761913>>64762039Comical cope.
>>64762039>inherently lightweight, can be made incredibly light if you want>fundamentally accurate design, inline as fuck>basically no recoil, in big part because of that>easily modular to adapt for your personal comfort, if you don't like the standard ergoes there's countless options>excellent reliability if you don't go for the really cheap ones>the cheap ones still have pretty good reliability and aren't hard to improve on>can build a good and highly reliable rifle out of parts, still getting good quality while saving money>standardized in the best infantry rifle cartridge, 5.56x45mm, but can be had in many others, like .350 LGN or .458 SOCOM for hunting larger game>contrary to popular belief and marketing, "DI" is quieter than short-stroke piston, lacking the Piston Pop effect>not picky on cleaning, vast majority of carbon will collect inside the BCG, and it'll tolerate a lot of that for a long time if you lubed it>action is pretty well buttoned up and tends to keep dirt out fairly wellI'd say the most notable weaknesses of the AR15 are these:>gas system doesn't love being shortened down a lot, you can make 10.5" and 8.5" barreled guns run reasonably well but they're never gonna be AS reliable as 14.5" and 16" barreled AR15s>it's not brittle, but you can't quite use it as a club like you can an AK or M1, it'll use a bayonet fine thoughSome people also lament the lack of folding stocks, but I personally don't see a big loss in that, the carbine stock collapses enough for me.I could envision improvements on the AR15, say if you were to start over fresh and then change some weak links, but I would not want to move away from the basic Idea. The gas system is good, 5.56mm is perfect, and I like the buffer system, I don't mind the lack of folding stocks and the tube going SPROING is comforting.
