What are your views on these? Will they dominate or are they overhyped? What are their advantages and drawbacks?
>>64767822My guess is they will be used as recon and sentries, current drawbacks limit their usefulness on the battlefield.>Battery/fuel tanks restrict distance and how long it can operate. >has limited amount of ammo, will require human operators to reload/unjam it. >if it flips it will require human operators to flip it back up>if it gets stuck in the middle will require a recovery vehicle to pull it out >no defense against FPVs>susceptible to EW, unlike an FPF I imagine it’s very difficult to run a fiber optic cable on it because it rolls around in the ground. All these limitations mean it has to operate near a human team.
>>64767844So its more of a defensive weapon?
>>64767822>Will they dominate or are they overhypedOverhyped only because the few who talk about such systems drum them up as complete gamechangers, the reality is they are situational, with the potential to assist soldiers in most/all traditional situations, but also rarely able to operate alone, but Ukraine has shown some areas of the frontline only need one of these things to change fortunes. >What are their advantages and drawbacks? They are a gun with endurance only limited by battery/fuel capacity, and they cut out the potentially dead weight human part (albeit they still need some dude to control them), Otherwise, they will need to return to a safe zone for service, refueling, and reloading of weaponry, it allows soldiers to not need to poke their heads out nearly as much to take shots at an enemy, and if you aren't getting zerged, it can help prevent infiltration and etc altogether due to it being essentially a camera with a gun that can roll around and shoot people.
>>64767872Whats with the pic tho?
>>64767878I dont have any pictures of ground based sentry drones, so that image will suffice>pic unrel
>>64767822Depends how well they appease the machine spirit.
>>64767822rover drones with a gun strapped to them are proven to be so effective even the chinese are mass adopting them
>>64767923I cant tell if youre serious or not
>>64767936you can look up how a solo rover in ukraine has been holding the same position by itself for a couple of months now, only returning to base for rearming and battery replacement
>>64767872I think the smaller ground robots will work better for stuff like demining, recon and surveillance, medivac, resupplies, rather than using them as dedicated weapons platforms. Use the bigger robots with 50 cals as dedicated gun platforms and the smaller ones as support units. >>64767923China also does shit like training soldiers to shoot while riding a motorcycle and using bayonets to knock down FPV drones so I wouldn’t take anything China does seriously until proven effective in combat.
>>64767923>>64767822wheels are objectively better than legs
>>64767822someone post the promotional video with an autonomous drone hunting and killing a balestinian
>>64768131Lmao what? Is that real?
>>64768199Lanius. The Israeli company pulled the ad from youtube a year or two ago after the negative comments, but it's been reuploaded.>>64767822Ground drones are a whole different category from air drones, and much less useful since they suffer from mobility problems. They're a tool situationally useful on the defense and for overwatch. Air drones OTOH are a big deal. FPV carriers/dispensers, fiber optic NLOS defenses, spotters for artillery, everything.
>>64767822>What are your views on these?very useful but less useful than robotic artilleryall the real advances in battlefield tech are happening in Europe
>>6476802>wheels are objectivelyNot if you need to go inside a trench dumbass. Too wide and can't turn well or get traction. Legs do have some huge advantages in certain situations, don't toss out the concept just because the Chinese do it
>>64768222>They're a tool situationally useful on the defense and for overwatchthey are extremely useful in logistics
>>64768232>very useful but less useful than robotic artilleryhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wssFOFrXqNs
>>64768241Sure, but like FPVs their logistical role in Ukraine is greater than it would be otherwise due to the scarcity of VSHORAD. Compare with a hypothetical midfuture firstworld army:-a halo of scouting drones and FPVs-surrounding the local AA units, which are also IFVs, and carrying the infantry-spotting for the deep strike artillery-trailed by traditional logistics with onboard AA, every RWS is also an anti-drone gun linked into the BMSIn this scenario logistics is going to be split between extra supply on the IFVs, no need for the same forward supply since artillery is moved back a few hudnred km, and 'conventional' quick resupply which is logistics trucks plus heavy-lift aerial drones for delivery.
>>64768199yes its spike firefly
>>64767844nice dubsI propose some future solutions to these issues:>Battery/fuel tanks restrict distance and how long it can operate. solar panels>has limited amount of ammo, will require human operators to reload/unjam it.eventually, a single robotic arm could be used to place a magazine into an exposed magwell, and quadcopter drones could just fly low and drop the magazines or even hand them off to the robot arm.>if it flips it will require human operators to flip it back up>if it gets stuck in the middle will require a recovery vehicle to pull it out robot arm also solves these if it's strong enough>no defense against FPVsyou could build in a ring of defensive bird shot chambers around the turret oriented upward>susceptible to EW, unlike an FPF I imagine it’s very difficult to run a fiber optic cable on it because it rolls around in the ground. as AI advances, it is possible (although terrifying) that they will one day be completely autonomous. For now though, you are right. pic related
>>64768347>can build star wars droids>cant even build a shitty prop droneStrategic implications?
>>64767946Yeah the robot ghost of kiev obviously
Overhyped but will have a place when it comes to defenseImagine the enemy thinks an area is clear after scouting it with an aerial drone, they miss these since they emit no heat when turned off, and as they move forward you turn these on remotely to ambush them
>>64768502Lmao>simpsons predicted itHahahSo sort of like a landmine?
>>64768548>So sort of like a landmine?That's what I'm thinking
