Anybody here have experience with service in the Swiss army?
I've gotta do my mandatory military service with the Swiss army at some point and I'd rather go with the actual army for 9months than wiping old people's shit for a whole year or paying 50k .
I've been thinking about trying to do pharmaceutical production for the army during my service after my bachelor since I'm studying pharmaceutical sciences and drug development
Link to Swiss army site about it -> https://functionfinder.armee.ch/functions/60479

Has anyone worked similar roles or have any thoughts in general about Swiss army service?

I am not a native Swissy but I've lived here long enough to get chatting to people who did their service. Bear in mind these were mostly from Romandie.

If you're living abroad and don't speak German, ensure you can speak German. Most of the guys said the usual conscript advice: don't volunteer, keep your head down; don't be either best or worst to avoid attentions of officers. Be in good physical shape, be good to your colleagues rather than a shitbag, it's a hard but memorable time. In the negatives, most said it's a poorly funded and baffling exercise to have a conscript army. One guy's dad told him the equipment was the same as in the 70s. He was a mountain troops guy so they avoided a lot of the bullshit and just camped up there. The Switzerland reddits probably have more peers you could chat to about it.

Everything is likely to change in the coming years. Shit has been on life support for the past 30 years, and the new strategic direction is moving towards collaboration with allies (I.e. NATO). The latest RUAG scandal is likely to motivate major reforms in acquisition. Anyone's experience is likely to be out of date in a few years, if not already. And of course, all these reforms could absolutely faceplant.

For the record, my service was as a lab tech in the NBC corps. It was pretty chill.

I did my service and my advice is go do something you think sounds fun, like artillery or being a tanker
No one is gonna hire you for your army experience anymore
Unless you become a professional soldier, then changing your branch is nigh impossible

Obligatory notswiss but this is bullshit. Taz90 camo is at least 1990s gear, same for Stgw90. 70s gear would have VERY obvious differences. 70s was still canvas/leather webbing era, alpenflage and STGW57. Not nylon, SCHV rifles etc.

I would assume maybe facilities would still be 70s era but not equipment.

Always a legit tdy for Swiss troops. Heh.

Some of the shit is 70s era for non combat arms. We had steel helmets, while the infantry got kevlar.

Yeah. This is utter bullshit. Depends entirely on what your job was in service. I came out as combat medic and could get good work literally anywhere in the world, for good pay. My wife was a flight nurse. She started making six figs 10 minutes after she deros'd.

There are intel jobs, electronics, heavy equipment operation and security positions that won't hire anyone EXCEPT those with actual military experience.

Being a ground-pounder, or a cannon-cocker was never a great resume line-item. Ever.

Pick the right specialty and it absolutely translates to enhanced hireability in the real world.

Perfect gear for storming 80s hotel lobbies

Fabrikationssoldat seems nice enough. Don't do anything in Logistik, don't even try infantry if you are not planning on getting into officers school, don't do FU if you are not autistic.
If you want to fuck your female sergeants: artillery.
If you want to fuck your fellow (female) soldiers: Medics.

I was in the Bundeswehr, central medical service. The amount of whoring around due to the mass of female soldiers there was/is legendary around the rest of the military. The medical academy in munich had the moniker of “biggest whorehouse in germany”. Made me lose reapect for women, which annoyingly helped me with dating.
>tfw I got propagandised into whamen and men should be equals on relationships and are totally the same.

It's not bad and it's short term, I was stuck into a military career at 13 that I only got to (kindof) leave at 28. I spent from 13-23 in dormitories with 36 other people (TEN FUCKING YEARS) until I got officer rank in the program which included severe corporal punishment and several deaths during training. No TV, No radio, MAYBE a military themed movies once a month. When we did go out before I goit ranl, we made the history books in our own unique way but took 87% KIA and they still would not let me out for another NINE FUCKING YEARS after that because fuck you you will stay in the middle of nowhere until no one gives a shit.

i was volunteered to die at 13 BY MY OWN PARENTS. I get no pension, no perks, no parades, no reunions, no nothing Now I'm old and jdgaf.

You'll be fine.
