The boat's career began with training at 8th U-boat Flotilla on 17 June 1942, followed by active service on 1 November 1942 as part of the 9th Flotilla for the remainder of her service.
In five patrols she sank three merchant ships, for a total of 19,325 gross register tons (GRT).

On 8 August 1943 U-664 fired three torpedoes at the escort carrier USS Card in a surprise attack, before USS Card was able to respond and forced her to dive. The following day, on 9 August 1943, U-664 was sunk in the North Atlantic in position 40°12′N 37°29′W, by depth charges from USN Grumman Avenger aircraft launched from the carrier. Seven crew members were killed and 44 rescued by USS Borie after seven hours in the water.

>U-732
>Type VIIC
> Sunk on 31 October 1943, in the Strait of Gibraltar north of Tangier, in position 35.54N, 05.52W,
Wikipedia says:
>U-732 was spotted in the afternoon of 31 October 1943 by the British anti-submarine trawler HMS Imperialist off Tangiers. Imperialist made several attacks, throwing a total of 28 depth charges, but was unable to destroy the U-boat. U-732 managed to dive and lay in 180 meters on the sea bed until the oxygen level and became critically low and the batteries were almost discharged. The hopes to escape their pursuers on the surface, were shattered by the presence of HMS Douglas, a British destroyer in the proximity. In the face of the situation, Carlsen decided at 22:30h to order the crew to abandon ship and scuttle the U-boat. Although all crew members made it off U-732, the heavy swell in near total darkness took a heavy toll, only 19 crew members were picked up while 31 perished in the event.

Translation:
>On the night of October 30-31, 1943, U-732 surfaced off Tangier, was spotted by enemy aircraft, and attacked. As a result, it submerged at dawn on October 31, 1943, to a depth of 60 meters, but around 1 p.m. was attacked with depth charges by the trawler HMS Imperialist. Due to the damage, it surfaced, but was then attacked by the British destroyer HMS Douglas with naval gunfire. A torpedo fired by U-732 missed the destroyer.

Pretty good/interesting actually, 9 patrols before sinking, participated in Operation Pastorius, and most of the crew even survived (30/48)

>'HF/DF' (radio detection equipment) of ships in the Second Support Group, (headed by the British sloop HMS Starling commanded by Captain FJ Walker, RN), detected U-202 when she transmitted a daily report at 9:30 am on the 1 June 1943. On closing the range, Starling's lookout spotted the swirl of water where U-202 had just crash dived after identifying the approaching vessels as warships. Five minutes later, the U-boat was detected with ASDIC (sonar) and attacked with depth charges. Despite much evasive action and the use of submarine bubble targets[a] to confuse the British sonar, the submarine failed to shake off her pursuers.

>The six British warships eventually adopted the tactic of keeping the U-boat moving, so as to use up her reserves of battery power. The expectation was that the U-boat would surface after dark and try to escape at speed on the surface. U-202 surfaced just after midnight, and the guns of the escort group immediately engaged her. Starling closed to ram her, but Walker decided at the last moment that the U-boat was already beaten. He turned Starling aside, firing depth charges at a shallow setting from the port thrower as she passed by. The damaged U-boat took 40 minutes to sink.[3]

>It was a textbook attack that pleased Walker enough to signal 'splice the mainbrace' (issue rum) in celebration.[5]

None.

>Fate
Sunk 20 Dec 1943 in the mid-Atlantic west of Madeira, Portugal, in position 32.54N, 37.01W, by depth charges and Fido homing torpedoes from 5 Avenger and Wildcat aircraft (VC-19) of the American escort carrier USS Bogue. 66 dead (all hands lost).

She got one actual voyage, and got popped by a jeep carrier. Pic related is her getting strafed, according to Wikipedia.

Likely the shipyards dedicated to scrapping already had contracts into the 1950s with all the British naval vessels that were not needed.

I hadn't considered that. It probably took a few years for all those contracts to get cancelled or modified for the post-war era, and then you'd still need to do something with those half-finished ships stuck in your yards. Good point, anon.

Decommissioned on 23 February 1945 at Wilhelmshaven.

Scuttled on 5 May 1945 at Wilhelmshaven, western entrance to Readerschleuse. Wreck broken up.
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-339 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
