The best intermediate rifle cartridge is the experimental 5.56 FABRL from back in the 70s. It’s a 5.56 case cut down a bit and loaded with a 37gr ultra VLD (i7ff=<0.85 IIRC), but loaded to the full ~55-60kpsi and loaded with full mass bullets, maybe 65-70gr EPRs. But these days if you really wanted to duplicate one, you could use a 221 fireball case and load it with the 62gr VT bullet from Hornady (G7BC=0.2). Or ideally, if you had enough money to commission those cases from Shell Shock, you could load them to ludicrous pressures. I say this is ideal because I’ve fucked around with all possibilities of bullet diameter and length in internal ballistics computers and found that the caliber of 22 is near-optimal for the 5.56 case, and a bullet length of around 55% of COAL minus base web is also ideal. If for some reason you had to use the 7.62x39 case head, the 6.5 grendel is the optimal 0-300yd cartridge, as its caliber and bullet length are also ideal.>>64782262>>64782284>>64782470>>64782562I’m here to settle this debate once and for all.
