What would warfare be like if witches and wizards (the kind that fly on brooms, cast spells, make potions, etc.) were real and integrated enough in their respective national and ethnic communities to enlist and fight in wars out of patriotic fervor?

In the film "the wizard of oz" the Wicked Witch of the West is able to, entirely remotely though a crystal ball, cause an effect that makes anyone within a large area fall asleep and never wake up until another witch breaks the enchantment.

I want you to imagine for a moment the strategic implications of such an ability.

Depends entirely on what kind of magic system we're working with. There's no clear answer until you give an exact work of fiction.
>>

Yeah are we Harry Potter, MtG, Elder Scrolls, DnD, or Fairly Oddparents? Is this wish your enemies balls explode magic, use an incantation to make their balls explode, use a wand to explode their balls, or the kind of lame ass magic that doesn't allow you to blow up someone's testicles?

In the Wizard of Oz book, the Poppy Field is a consistent hazard that you just need to be dragged out of to be cured.

In the movie version, the witch gives a strange monologue about her spell, mixes something in a mortar near her crystal ball, then Dorothy finds herself surrounded by poppy flowers which cause her and the lion to immediately lose consciousness until Glinda uses magic to break the spell.

This is why I always bring up the Wicked Witch, because the way these threads usually go is some "Connecticut Yankee" Gate:Bitch inevitably starts saying that fantasy gets shot with a gun and anyone saying magic doesn't get killed by a gun is using some ultra obscure magic system no one's ever heard of.

No one argues when you use the Wicked Witch as an example and while she's not exactly a smart villain she shows some powers that don't stop being impressive once you introduce them to a modern setting (teleportation and remote attack mainly).

This is the only anon that is remotely close. The existence of magic users capable of doing flashy Harry Potter style spells would've fundamentally altered human history in such a way that humanity would exist in a completely alien way to us.

If these wizards existed since the beginning of time, they would very likely be worshiped as living gods by primitive humans and would rule over normies as magic aristocrats that would tightly control the spread of their magic lineage. Earth kingdoms would be similar to Dark Sun or the Goa'uld from Stargate, a collection of realms entirely based on the personal rule of whichever God-Wizard is stronger, and advanced science and industry would probably never arise

An entertaining curiosity when artillery, nukes and chemical weapons exist. Actually wait. They'd fulfill a similar role to the company level drone operator in that they can recon and call for fire, except magic is on the other side of the call. there's some interesting Harry Potter fanfiction that delves into this
basically the big divergences are either

>1) as above, so below
based on the theory that wizard and muggle life is more intertwined than either admits
the muggle battlefield becomes a proxy or the visible tip of a magical shadow war iceberg. this is more or less canon at least for WW2, as JK Rowling hinted that the Dumbledore-Grindelwald war was at the very least concurrent if not part of muggle WW2

alternatively,
>2) wizards won't have the same politics as muggles
which is plausible because of how isolated wizard communities are, in SOME ways, from muggles
the problem is mudbloods, but canonically they make up such a tiny proportion of the wizard population that it would be easy to basically ignore their problems or deal with them ad hoc
halfbloods are more numerous and more intertwined and they would be the real problem

>>64797087
>imagine
don't have to, the Protoss Mothership's Time Warp ability has ample examples of battlefield implementations

>>64798580
that is in fact the world of Harry Potter
the fight is fundamentally about the good wizards trying to stop the bad wizards from genociding the non-magics, but JKR really really dropped the ball on emphasising that

>>64804311
>spy on all their top brass
try mind control
the smartest bit of magical warfare Harry Potter ever had was when the bad guys started trying to mind control bong ministers and the good guys pre-emptively bodyguarded the PM and tried to cure the controlled one

mugglewank always forgets that it takes just one wizard to mind control an SSBN crew and salvo ICBMs at every nuclear power in the world simultaneously
>>
>>64808369
>mugglewank always forgets that it takes just one wizard to mind control an SSBN crew and salvo ICBMs at every nuclear power in the world simultaneously
JK is not only a British Woman, but a particularly retarded British Woman, making her one of the least strategically proficient minds on the planet. No wizard would take control of a SSBN because they cant even figure out what Rubber Ducks are after earnest study, most of them don't even know what a gun IS, and moreover because successfully describing the inside of a modern submarine would be an impossible task for Rowling.
>>
>>64808347
>pregnancy fetishist

>>
>>64808536
>Rubber Ducks
ironically, that line was added by American movie scriptwriters, making them even less strategically proficient than a British woman, according to you
>most of them don't even know what a gun IS
the same way most of us don't know what an atlatl is, or don't give a fuck about how to use a sling; it's irrelevant in an era of ARs / wands
>and moreover because successfully describing the inside of a modern submarine would be an impossible task for Rowling.

>You mean a human without brain damage?

Fair point, but whoever was writing this script REALLY went out of their way to inject it every chance they got. In the opening scene of The Way of Water alone, there's like three different pregnant chicks.

Normally I'd say it was Cameron, but this isn't really a repeating theme in any of this movie (the only other movie of his I can think of that has a pregnant woman at all in it is Sarah Connor at the very end of the original Terminator and even that was more obligatory than anything)

>>64808552
>women should be pregnant 90% of the time.

"Pregnant. Yes, thatis how all women should be all the time. As soon as they are able to breed they must either be pregnant, giving birth or trying to become pregnant, every moment of their lives until they run out of eggs. I'm a feminist."

- Hayao Miyazaki 1969

“The two most beautiful sights I have witnessed in my life are a full blown ship at sail and the round-bellied pregnant female.”

-Benjamin Franklin, 1776

>integrated enough in their respective national and ethnic communities to enlist and fight in wars out of patriotic fervor

Well you can pretty much strike Harry Potter from the list right there seeing as one of the major themes of the entire series is that the Wizarding World has to remain hidden, lest the goy-errr I mean muggles start pogroming them again, and that children who bridge the two worlds Hermoine (born to a mixed marriage) and Harry (only discovered his wizard ancestry fairly late in his childhood) are bullied as outsiders.
>>
>>64808548
>ironically, that line was added by American movie scriptwriters, making them even less strategically proficient than a British woman, according to you
In your desperate, sad attempt to rush to this zinger point you've mixed up "British and women are subhuman, this is a fact we all know" with "here's a random example of Wizards being retarded".

>>64808548
>the same way most of us don't know what an atlatl
Yes what with spending your entire life surrounded by Atlatls and having significant proportions of your society grow up in caveman tribes.

One hundred dog sized spiders with zero superpowers are considered a critical tactical advantage to Wizards in large scale combat. An individual wizard has the "tool kit" to topple the entire modern world order but the brain of an angry child.

Sorry you're never going to talk this setting away from being infomercial-land where 99.9% of people are pants shitting retarded 99.9% of the time.

that's wizard-muggle relations for the most part.

Dwarven guns will never break because they're so overbuilt you'll never find one weighing less than 20lbs. Unfortunately they're all chambered for boutique calibers used exclusively by individual gunsmiths that only produce limited quantities to order. Elven rifles are handmade works of art, unfortunately so is the ammunition and calibers will be declared obsolete the moment anything with even the slightest increase in performance, no matter how marginal, comes along.

i have a never properly explored idea of a fantasy world where magic is useful and powerful, but harmful to the users and their surroundings. in the way that every incantation leaves some free residual magic with effects kind of like gamma rays.
so if you draw too much magic, you kill yourself. with a lesser dose you can give yourself cancer or make your offspring tainted and retarded. and no amount is completely safe.
i wonder what the implications would be.

both Dresden Files and Rivers Of London give this as the reason why wands and staffs are needed for more powerful magic; i.e. it increases output and reduces the immediate strain on users' brains which would otherwise turn to much

well there's the rub. wizards don't have to fight in direct combat scenarios. they already carry on their lives completely undisturbed by mind controlling the population to not know they exist. and all it takes, as I said, is 1 competent wizard to win the war.

she gives birth while still asleep, and her newborn babies seeking nourishment suck at her fingers, removing the thorn
Sleeping Beauty wakes up, they are found by the prince, and she marries him
his mother is less than pleased, and wants to eat them, as she is secretly an ogre
one day when the prince is away his mother orders the palace cook to cook them
the cook hides them and cooks lamb instead
the ogre is not deceived / finds out and is about to throw them in the fireplace and eat them all for reals when the prince returns
his mother anheroes into the fire rather than face her son

you'd probably see warfare remain fairly similar up until WW1, with wizards serving as artillery. then suddenly abraxas the destroyer is almost done chanting some sort of gibberish about the fires of avernus just as pvt. billy to put a clean hole through his third eye. though the war crime list would be far more interesting i think, mustard gas would seem like just a more chemical version of spells that already exist at that point so the geneva convention might look pretty fun.

that's a rather shortsighted take. it surely wouldn't look like nine guys with guns and one dude with a magic wand and a pointy hat. the magic would get integrated into the conventional doctrine (and change it). a wizard artilleryman mogs your muggle artilleryman and a wizard pilot with right spells in a Sukhoi still mogs your muggle pilot in an F22.
the limited number of magic users would be a bottleneck for everyone and it would be interesting to see to what roles would different nations allocate their valuable wizards

Let's assume that Wizards can't just be walking weapons of mass destruction or absurd reality benders or they'd already rule the world. Let's assume they're a rare breed and there's only 1 on every 10.000 thousand pop. A mid-sized industrial nation would have around 5000 to 10000 wizards.

I believe we overlook the force multiplier they can be for normal troops - not by flying a slow broom into visual range but because of their use in the industry. Rather than a single Wizard on the frontline he could be making rifles of always hitting, potions of regrow fucking limbs and cast invisibility on scouting planes or imbue 1000kg bombs with amplification. A dozen would rearm and refit vehicles in minutes, a hundred could mend your navy after deployment in a few days instead of months. Transporting new barrels and shells to your artillery? Childs play with the mage supported logistics. How do we deal with ptsd ridden veterans? A spell of amnesia for the last year of trauma, good as new.

I find it odd everyone assumes that magic that fucks the laws of physics to present a false image MUST NOT present a false image of heat.

Regardless the witches would have been working with the military all through the development of infrared, they'd have decades to adjust a spell to spoof a heat sensor.

Are there any fantasy works like Harry Potter that even cover wizards/witches using their powers to do things like fix machinery?

Every fantasy story I've read has them using their powers to replace machines rather than supplement them.

Trenches would have been way more prevalent in medieval war and defensive magic would matter more than offensive because of examples like this >>64797087

Cavalry would have a new role of mage hunting as they're the primary means of getting past enemy lines

If we're going full magic rather than just mages, then long ranged weapons become less effective, as it's unlikely any would have massed stopping power like they do in our world, as you'd need to defeat mana protection levels in armor before injuring someone

The main differences that's obvious with mages would be communication and night fighting, with mages being able to communicate instantly, and case see in the dark buffs, or even invisibility buffs for special operations, so battle strategy would probably evolve WAY faster than actual tech and gear used, you'd see modern warfare strategy and combined arms used with ballistas and chariots, for example

If Witches can
A) attack remotely at extreme range
B) be blocked by other witches
it becomes a scenario where how fucked things are is inversely proportional to how common your casters are, because if you've only got enough of them for your leaders and high command the actual theater of war is going to be a huge clusterfuck.
>>
>>64857226
Well they wouldn't be the only thing that matters, magic is cumbersome in most media, wide area spells take ages days even to cast and are usually easily countered, with high end witches that can do insane things being rare due to their age, while common casters can easily cast wards etc

I think it's more, any squad would require a mage of some kind to be effective, possibly two (combat support and warding) not including a medic who would defacto be a mage in such an environment

They'd still be vulnerable to other troops

High Fantasy and Low Fantasy are terms that meant, and only ever meant "Does this take place in a totally fictional planet or on earth with fictional elements".
Lord of the Rings is Low fantasy.
Game of Thrones is High Fantasy.

Stop using them as power levels, that's fucking gay. Every reddit pseud has spent the last ten years using them as "power levels" and it's infected the lexicon of normies.

It's not about power level and you completely misunderstand their meaning to the point I'm hoping you accidentally switched your 2 examples.
It's about the predominance & sophistication of the in-setting fantasy aspects (predominantly magic).

Essentially the same as comparing
>low-tech, early industrial era
The common individual would still relate with medieval farmers, but having a tractor is still a game changer
>high-tech, far future era
Everything in a person life is related to technology, they can't live without understanding & using it even if they wanted to avoid it.

>Low fantasy
Magic barely do anything, mystical creature/items are just magical version of the normal ones, their importance is limited you can ignore them.
>High fantasy
Magic easily rewrite reality, mystical creatures/items change geopolitics, even kids may need to know & use the magic in their everyday life.

>Lord of the Ring
I hope you miss typied because it's almost the definition of HIGH fantasy, absolutely everything is influenced by magic, the world is even flat until the end of The Silmarilion.
https://achivx.com/is-tolkien-high-fantasy-or-low-fantasy/
>Game of Thrones
Again, this one is obviously low fantasy, it's medieval in almost every aspect except for the few rare magic users, occasional dragons.

As for its use in >>64859226 (made more complicated by Magic versus Tech)
It's just a logical conclusion between
>magic world that's 90% medieval, easy to understand from a modern perspective, easy to notice what is non-medieval and to be prudent.
>magic world that's 90% magic, hard to understand from a modern perspective, where you can be magically cursed by a damn kid.

And while I'm on it
>on earth with fictional elements
If you do a setting in the contemporary era, it would become Urban fantasy, compatible with low-fantasy but typically distinct from stuff involving magitek.
>>

>>
>>64868505
I understand why that could be misunderstood. But when I said, it was in relation to the pic >>64859226 which imply a power level, ...and in context (facing cursed AK holder) it's technically correct. A high-fantasy mage would have a more chance to magic things around, like make the gunner believe his AK is a snake and drop it.

Also I still had to argue about LotR being high-fantasy.
>>
>>64869471
> A high-fantasy mage would have a more chance to magic things around, like make the gunner believe his AK is a snake
to me, that falls under power levels too, from a Doylist POV
>Also I still had to argue about LotR being high-fantasy
Fair enough
>>
>>64870875
>to me, that falls under power levels too, from a Doylist POV
Watson POV: given the nature of magic there's nothing strictly enforcing that a Low Fantasy cannot beat gun wielding opponents.
It's less a question of powerlevel, and more of compatibilities.

>portal open
>gun equipped invaders try to take over this obviously medieval area
>local mages and witches take weeks to gather ingredients and perform magic spell, would be ignored as fool even if they weren't hidding in the populace
>curse everyone who pass through the portal into becoming blind
>the spell is weak, low fantasy, can be removed or protected against, but invaders wouldn't know how and piss themselves

Also the elephant in the room is explaining such portal without ruining the multiverse.
>>
>>64868481
High fantasy means
>This takes place on a planet that is explicitly not earth
Low fantasy means
>This takes place on a planet that is explicitly earth

That's it, that's all they mean. You're a fucking pseud and a half.
>>
>>64869471
>Also I still had to argue about LotR being high-fantasy.
Yes, Arda is earth in the ancient past explicitly. Tolkien was extremely clear, even stating point blank it was earth despite any geographic differences that could be resolved by God or what have you.

Lord of the Rings is Low fantasy.
Low fantasy just means earth.

>Lord of the Ring
>That novel, published in 1954–1955, enormously influenced fantasy writing, establishing in particular the form of high or epic fantasy,

By your "logic" so long as a fiction end with "then magic turn it into Earth" it would default as "Low-fantasy" and actually you'd not have "low fantasy" either because adding any magic make this "Earth" of yours an alternate world.

You don't have this problem with the real definition or my take.
There's no easy delimitation, we have to create new subgenre all the time. Just take "Urban fantasy", it can also be either Low or High fantasy.

High Fantasy and Low fantasy are niche classifications for a background setting, YES, not genre.

>Lord of the Rings is Low fantasy.

Middle Earth doesn't really seem to have that much in common with actual Earth. I get that LOTR is roughly equivalent to the High Middle Ages in Europe but it's clearly not using actual European geography or cultures (ex. basically every human in the films speaks English when Europe alone has dozens of distinct languages and thousands of regional dialects).

The Silmarillion describe the world of LOTR as literally flat until it was made round for the second age.
Its geography is the result of the Valar (gods under the true god) fighting over what they had created.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Arda#Years_of_the_lamps
Then eventually that dead world abandoned by the gods and elves became what we call Earth "6 or 7th age".

Tolkien really do like writing backstory for every tree branch.

They will be allocated based on mission priorities and lots of conventional units will beg for their presence.

Also they will need a JTAC equivalent on the ground to ensure the witch is used as effectively as possible when she does her fly by/teleportation for the short amount of time she can remain on station.
