I don't mind the hour drive, I make a day of it and sometimes bring my Coleman and make some hotdogs. It was actually fun getting the funds to open up when I was younger. They love hotdogs. Now the range is filled with cod tiktok brain zoomers. I find myself shooting .22s and trying to get the best groups now a days, but usually pack up early because zoomers just mag dump into the ground with no sights and walk between ranges with them loaded. I'm so bored when I go now though, seeing less boomers to, they really did have some fun oddities in their collections. Squirrel hunting has actually helped curve the bordem of not having your own range. There are a few gun clubs with neat steel set ups, but they either charge way to much or the rules negatively impact trying to train.

>parallax
Sort of.
Rather than parallax between the ocular and the reticle, you have parallax between the display and the scope.
Thankfully this parallax is a fixed variable for any given scope+mounting height+mounting distance combo.
If you locked your rifle in a bench vise, put a coti on it and aimed at a point with the coti/rifle scope and then removed the coti you would observe a degree of shift in your POA. On my NSW recce + Yoter this is roughly 12.1cm high and 2.4cm right @ 100m
>Zero
You dont zero them, you remove/compensate for parallax
You remove the aforementioned parallax can be mitigated one of two ways
1) Properly collimated thermal eyepiece to remove parallax. This is usually a risley prism aligned on a bench and placed in the thermal. This is why you have mil thermals that dont require "zeroing" . You pay for this with cost, weight and bulk
or
2) Screen sliding. The thermal presents the 640x480 image as 640x480 pixels on a 1024x768 canvas or whatever the specifics of the thermal is. You then adjust where on that canvas the 640x480 image presents. This is effectively minimizing the parallax of the thermal by shifting the point of aim accordingly. This is cheap but kinda fucking annoying and isnt truly precise so there will always be a little bit of precision missed between steps of adjustment. This is what your cheap chinese thermals do.

So when sliding the screen in my yoter I feed it -12.1 and -2.4 variables respectively and boom the thing more or less matches whatever my turrets on the rifle are doing.

They are significantly darker than Vietnamese who are more like Chinese complexion. Thai seem to vary.
A lot of Vietnamese here too, they can also be niggerish but not nearly as bad as Cambodians.
Tbqh not hard to see why Chinese themselves as superior to other Asians.
Japanese are obviously the best across all categories, definitely an S tier race,
Chinese are quiet, follow the rules, don’t cause trouble but once they get Americanized after a few generations they turn pretty insufferable.
I don’t know anything about Koreans other than they love Starcraft so they’re cool.
The rest of Asians are whatever. Seems like they kind of exist for the sole purpose of taking white dick.

Larger issue: Theres not even a magazine in the rifle!
>>
When setting up a fighting rifle, especially for an American to use in a semi-guerilla fashion for contingencies where there is a partial breakdown of society, it seems like the ideal format would be something in the 11.5-16 inch range to cover the widest variety of likely scenarios such as user would encounter. Of course this is mainly focused on defense of home and community, but I would think it would be reasonable to encounter anything from singular, desperate vagabonds all the way up to foreign special operations forces looking to exploit the chaos.

From there, the goal is to ensure you have as much capabilities across as many spectrums as possible. Humor me, and for the purposes of this thought exercise I am not really focused on enablers such as UXS, comms, gear etc.

The obvious friction is wanting to cram as much "stuff" as possible into a relatively short package. The shorter the rifle, the more flexibility one has as far as movement options, ease of use, external appearance, etc. but you also lose out on real estate quickly when it comes to getting a good scope, thermal, IR laser and so on. Where would you rack and stack these enablers, given the situation? Prioritize day optic (MPVO) and thermal and push the IR to the side? More compact option like a red dot/mag or Elcan and accept the day optic constraints? Try to go middle of the road with an LPVO and get everything fitting on the top rail, but have to go with a longer gun/handguard combo to cram things on top?

Just want to see what people would prioritize as far as making things fit.

You can fit an NX8+acro+RH25 on SBR length handguards. Do you really want an offset lam and light? At that point the gun is getting fairly bulky upfront.
Thankfully AR15s and their uppers are so cheap you can have a 10.3-11.5" gun with a dot+mag and a MFAL and a dedicated longer range 14.5-16" upper with a proper scope, coti, etc. If that coti happens to be a multirole unit you can still use it in a spotter role with the shorter upper.

That's generally the conclusion I've come to, but would prefer to keep the LAM. I think the NX8, especially with the DMx reticle, is a good choice seeing as it was specifically created for an agency with the idea of fitting on a short upper with thermals and lasers, granted it is not the best performing LPVO out there but you gotta pay the piper somewhere to cram it into such a tiny package. Thanks.

11.5" with a quality lightweight and short MPVO, maybe something like the new Primary Arms 1.5-12x36mm FFP that is 9.3" long and 16.5oz
Stacked closed emitter top dot like a 509T X2 or a COA, side mount Arken Targetlock 3000 WMLR, clip on thermal like an RH25 V2 or maybe the upcoming 640 micro clip on from DNT.
PLH V2 multi mode 18350 light head on an SF 340 18350 Pro pivot body, Unity Gas Cap USB C tailcap, Modbutton USB -C pressure switch, and some sort of super lightweight low profile IR laser and illuminator setup, I'm a bit out of touch with those these days.
Throw a Rhodie 6k on there, an Arc-fire 45/90 FRT SS with mil spec style long long levers and then some 73,75, 77gr NAS3

>NX8
Quick linear approximation apples to apples evaluation shows the Primary Arms 1.5-12x absolutely blowing the NX8 1-8x out of the water in terms of magnification value normalized FOV and exit pupil by ~50-60% obviously as a result to first order of the ~50% increase in objective lens diameter. Weight and length are comparable, and of course the cherry on top is the additional magnification range of the PA which goes to 12x vs the 8x top end of the NF.
Oh no but we lost 50% of our low end going from 1x to 1.5x?! Oh but we gained 50% on our top end going from 8x to 12x... and gained FOV and exit pupil throughout the range thanks to 50% increase in objective diameter.....

Fuck a LPVO, nigga
>>
>>64809526
>>64809610
The MPVO is 9.75", which doesn't seem like much but in a game of inches, it's gonna push the LAM off and I don't want to do so. Also, the ACSS is a really bad reticle and I'm definitely not putting a primary arms scope on this rifle.

Maybe the new DAGIR will be short enough to make a longer LPVO fit, with the transverse battery allowing for room for battery changes.

tbqh this has been example of why I don't like 11.5s at all.
With a 10.3 and a 14.5 there exists a very clear distinction and as such the rationale for choosing one over the other is thought out and deliberate.
11.5tards think that it's both in one and so they start trying to do 14.5 use cases with 10,3 physical dimensions.
In other words, it is a retard magnet barrel length.

Exactly, it isn't, which is why it is baffling that retards still suggest LPVOs when the gains are obvious, and linear, by going to MPVOs. Oh that is right it is because poors and aesthetica fashonista posters don't want to pay for the top red dot and MPVOs look off (just not what they're used to) on top of short guns.
>larger
Even if the MPVO has the SAME objective size as the LPVO under comparison, you still get the magnification range gains at zero normalized FOV and exit pupil loss. Maybe a bit darker at the top end, as compared to the imaginary brightness of the top end that the LPVO doesn't have? Same brightness and clarity (optic quality held constant) at like magnification values?
MPVOs are just free range and capability at this point (modulo the cost of a top red dot and no "drip" because it looks weird).

If you want to maintain a higher lethality past that distance the benefits of a longer barrel ie 14.5+ start to come into play. 11.5 mostly nets you a smoother less violent shooting experience that helps reduce wear on your gun greatly. The added velocity gives some overhead and is a bit closer to a sweet spot but I don't think its that much of a game changer IRL.

I got to take a look at the PA 1.5-12 at SHOT. Admittedly, I dislike the ACSS reticles, but even still I was not overly impressed with the scope. Did you get to play with it at all at SHOT? Interested to see what you thought of the glass clarity.

I mean yeah reticle is shit and it is chink glass and Primary Arms etc
But NF COULD have done something similar, obviously, but instead we get the NX6 2-12 which is better overall. Main issue is the weight and length at 23oz and 12.5"
But we get the extended magnification range and the better FOV and Exit pupil at that.

Assuming the other shit fits and sits (clip on, light laser etc), I'm fine with an NX6 2-12
3-18 IMO starts running into the weight and length issue even more, and the 3x one might argue is a bit tight for clip on scanning.

>>
Whats the point in suppressing an ar more than 14.5 inches? It doesn't make it much quieter, often doesnt even help with flash that much, and just adds weight and length. Im genuinely asking, is the signature even worth it when going longer than 11.5 even?? With the increase in thermal usage, is it worth having a giant glowing tube on the front of your gun? The downsides of cans seem to edge out any benefit
>>
>>64809760
The use case is shooting things, its a gun. You seem to be confused why 11.5 is a better choice over a so 10.3 I explained why. My broader point is if you are shooting under 300 yards the barrel length between all 3 mean very little in practical terms if talking purely of velocity/lethality.

I want certain capabilities built into the gun, generally WL and passive aiming solutions as a bare min, active too if I have the rail estate. Some form of magnification too if possible even if it's just a magnifier on a qd that stays in my pocket most of the time. Same goes for thermal

Depends on what youre doing with the rifle, there are very few places where a 16" gun with a can is an option but an 11.5" gun with a can is not an option so it becomes self solving. At that point if you cant have any NFA you should be using a smith vortex and low flash ammo.

Heavy, kicking up backpressure in operating system and not actually capturing the overpressure. Indoors they are still loud as shit regardless of the direction of travel. Flash hiding on those also not really all that excellent. There is a reason the flaming pig features a pig shooting fire out the front.
>I can tell virtually no difference in signature
>My hearing is completely blasted
I mean you arent doing yourself any favors here with these but suppressed 5.56, especially at distance is drastically quieter and makes it even harder to PID. A can is just really nice as a whole. While not hearing safe, if you pop a seal on an earmuff accidentally you wont be immediately rung by shots. Indoors its wonderful as well.

the flaming pig is what happens on super short barrels (which is what noveske intended them used for). the KX-3/5 are grossly overbored (9mm) a properly designed "Bulgarian 4 piece" flash hider is a lot more effective, especially when using a longer (13"+) barrel.

This used to be my philosophy, ergo my 4.25" 9.8oz BT PrintX Mini 556 K with YHM Kurz Ti mount, picture related... But suppressor tech has evolved so much so quickly recently, even I would gladly take another ~1" (16-25% length increase) and 2-4oz (20-40%) weight increase to get the suppression performance gains that we're seeing from the current iteration of top performers, Rhodie 6, Exigent Defense, Tisha, etc etc.

I mean more, for sure, but how much more/at what cost/how much does this actually affect me is the question.
Strela reduces concussion fairly significantly compared to a normal flash hider. Does a sandman k reduce it orders of magnitude more than that? Perhaps not quite so much. It's also longer, heavier and significantly more expensive than a bulgy flash can.
Depends on use case like all things.
>>64810212
have the KX-3, strela and ghost ME. haven't tried the others.
kx-3 isn't as effective for the earlier mentioned reasons so ghost or strela by default. functionally they are near identical. strela is a bit more expensive but the flash cone is a replaceable part (whereas it's integrated with the cap in the ghost).

little over 2,000 rounds as of today. about 25% of that at uh a higher cadence of fire. surprisingly it hasn't eroded that much since I last checked about 1k rounds ago. being on a 16" barrel probably helps

ngal specifically, PEQ actually makes sense on some rails. It may have to be a MAWL. I'd almost prefer another M6TR over an IRIS but I'm honestly pretty impressed with the latter from what I've seen in person, and way less sketchy tbn. Just ugly

There is no usecase for the 75% of the weight, length and size muzzle device that doesnt suppress the rifle. This isnt some soviet block state where cans are universally 30oz and 8" long where a compromise device starts to make sense. People are buying 10oz 4.1" suppressors on same week free tax stamps that completely render these devices obsolete for an even larger pool of users. Go put a smith vortex on the gun or a can, no reason for this fiddlefucking.

Mil, LE and any other enduser unloaded flashcans a decade ago when serviceable suppressors became readily available. Nobody misses them.
>>64810370
If they were more waterproof they would be excusable with the shifting zero and bad controls. But as it stands they are kinda junk pal.

Best post itt

Wow what a fun and friendly thread.
To the anon asking about what can for a 16” i was thinking going with a velos k but i can never commit. Ive considered going the strela route too. I just care about flash under nods though so my priorities may not align with yours. This weekend i am going to sell my kr9 at a lgs and look at their cans

>There is no usecase
I don't think that's true though, there is plenty of use cases for a device 25% lighter/shorter and about 15% of the cost even if it's half as effective. it's still significantly better than a normal flash hider or brake. Agencies have a budget to use up and a dedicated armorer.

This would be awesome for my use case if it wasn't so long. I'm currently using a 1-6 that's the same length with a thermal and it's extremely tight on the top rail with a LAM. Pressure pad for the light does not fit, so I need to fit it somewhere non-ideal. An extra .5-1" off if they could have shaved it would have been fantastic.

Wasn't a fan either. They're useless past 300 yards, the clarity just isn't there and the hashes cover most of the target at 400+. The disappearing bezel like the razor is neat and all but my guess is they get rode so hard because PA gives them out like candy to fluencers and everyone who makes the jump to one is coming from a holosun dot+mag or a Sig MSR lpvo and is of course blown away

I had a Burris RT-3 and I upgarded to a Trijicon Credo SFP 1-6X for my general purpose SHTF rifle. It's a great optic but I am still wondering if I should have gotten an ACOG instead. It's lighter, smaller, more durable and not that much more expensive. I've never shot an ACOG before so I was a bit hesitant to drop that much money on something people are so divided on. Has anyone that has shot both of these optics before have an opinion. I'm still in the return window of the Credo so I can return it and get the ACOG if I want.

You should have been investing in gold and silver years ago, you don't buy when it is at all time highs, might as well buy ammo instead, it will only go up in value
