How realistic was this movie in terms of the discretion a tank commander would have in the USSR? Could officers really field execute their subordinates if there's insubordination? Also can a tank just drive for days without refueling the way they showed?
>>64825210I finally get ot post this!
extremely unrealistic movie, but an excellent movie
>>64825210>Also can a tank just drive for days without refueling the way they showed? An M1 should have a range of somewhat over 250 miles on roads or equivalent (hard flat fields or sand or whatever aren't a haul) and maybe half that on rougher off road. And that's at like 40-50mph on road and again about half off. So you get maybe 6 hours run time continuous tops. Though the turbine will run on damn near any hydrocarbon for awhile, even like fucking vegetable oil, albeit with a big maintenance bill to pay later. Tank is like 500gal or something so I suppose in theory in some places you could "forage" for fuel on some level in theory, steal from gas stations or restaurants or whatever.
>>64825823>steal from gas stations or restaurants or whatever.russians are very well known for their... resourcefulness in that regard
>>64825210Thx OP, this movie is so underrated and forgotten
>>64825210This was my favorite movie since I was 8 till I realized its actual israeli propaganda. Still an awesome movie though.
>>64827003those things have narrower range of fuels tho. iirc abrams is a straight forward and solid gas turbine so it should be able to use damn near anything at least briefly. tho vegetable oil or something would probably fuck it up within a week or two of usage. but in reality that capability never actually mattered and army just standardized on jp8 since logistics is king.but yeah in the beast it was an old soviet tank in middle of fucking nowhere afghan so yeah just handwave that bit to make a cool film.

>>64829604You mean because it was filmed in israel and used a bunch of israeli extras and the tank was a modified israeli tank?Keep in mind, 80s israel may have been an apartheid state but they weren't mowing down thousands of civilians at a time and laughing about it, it was just normal levels of everyday third world casual barbarism, not genghis khan levels of mass slaughter. So it's not as morally contaminated as it would be if it were made today
It's funny to see manny from scarface speaking pashtun. I wonder how bad it sounds to a native speaker
