Is this a good deal? To buy the F-16 block 70? Logistically, it would have been better to get the Rafale F4 since the French won't care too much about how they use them and therefore don't have to worry about being cut-off from support, but with the F-16 strings may be attached and their use could hypothetically be limited. That being said, this F-16 deal comes with a special perk, it'll designate Peru as a major non-NATO ally, so to Peru that was worth it because of the many perks and benefits that brings to the table for Peru. What do you guys think? Was it a good decision?
Why are you talking as if they chose that airplane? they're still in the study phase, if they buy anything at all.
>>64827950Gripen might genuinely be a good pick with Brazil being so close by for deliveries and support. However F16 isn't a bad pick, they're gonna be in our sphere of influence regardless of what they say or pick and the Viper is unquestionably a good plane
Good pick. Also they could see their old Mirages and MIG-29s to Ukraine.
>>64827964Dawg, it's basically unofficially confirmed by a bunch of Peruvian news outlets. https://elmacheteperu.com/2026/01/31/el-peru-decide-comprar-24-cazas-f-16-block-70-tras-acuerdo-estrategico-con-los-estados-unidos/https://www.zona-militar.com/2026/01/31/decision-tomada-peru-seleccionaria-al-f-16-block-70-como-futuro-caza-multirol-para-equipar-a-su-fuerza-aerea/https://www.pucara.org/post/la-fuerza-a%C3%A9rea-del-per%C3%BA-va-por-el-f-16v-block-70https://www.infobae.com/peru/2026/02/01/la-fuerza-aerera-del-peru-muy-cerca-del-f-16-una-version-de-caza-mas-moderna-y-poderosa-que-la-de-chile/
>>64828016That's arguably a reason to not get them. A lot of these countries have territorial disputes. There are disputes between Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, and possibly Brazil along their loose amazonian border. Also Brazil can be seen as an economic competitor to Peru due to their fruit and other agricultural production. Even though Peru and Brazil are friendly, you wouldn't want to depend on an economic rival.
>>648281255 months ago the media said the same but with the Gripen, unless there's an official confirmation, signing and after-audit approval then there's nothing besides clickbaits, even after confirmation they can cancel the acquisition (incredibly common in SA).Both Peru and Colombia have acquisition plans with similar budget (3-4 billion dollars) and proposals: Gripen NG, F-16 70, Rafale F4.Colombia seems to be a little ahead in their plans and the FAP haven't announced anything in their website.
>>64828150Well maybe maybe they'll end up with the Rafale after all lol. So that way they won't have the same jet as Chile. Having the same jet as their main enemy is going to make things complicated.
>>64827950Why do they need them?
>>64832346That kind of retarded questions can ruin a lot of sales.
>>64828136The only country that has a real, go-to-war scale territorial dispute with peru is ecuador, and present-day ecuador is not in any position to try to reclaim the land peru stole from them 80 years ago. Maybe they could threaten to send some street gangs to peru, though they probably already did
>>64828016I wouldn't count on Brazil to anything since it's in political hell right now with fraudulent elections and the military is getting defunded to hell by the current president.
>>64832514>fraudulent electionsKeep your retardation restricted to your shithole.
>>64832529It's amazing how retard lefties found their way to /k/.
Girls will you shut up about your /pol/posting please and retvrn to talking about the FAP?
>>64832473That and Colombia. But one country that Peru has serious territotial disputes with is Chile ever since they took Arica. The average peruvian doesn't like Chile at all. And that small strip of land that Chile took ended up having a lot of copper.
>>64828016YesCan Brazil produce the planes?
>>64832980Yes, localization was a requirement of Brazil, that's why they selected the Gripen NG when it was in development.>As expected the tech transfer for localization increased the price per unit of the acquisition, but Brazil always does the same
>>64832995YeahReally a cool programIt's just putting a lot of faith on Brazil to keep the line open. If I was Saab and Br I would make a very competitive offer to Peru just keep the lines hot and the lower the unit price. Like how France will sell Rafeals originally slotted for their airforce.
>>64828110Have Su-25 and Mi-35 to Not going to get a better price for that old stuff than now.
>>64833049They'll produce Gripen for the Brazilian Air Force until ~2032 (Embraer seems to share the production line to reduce cost at the price of production rate), there're some delays during the pandemic. Besides that it seems that Saab could rely on Embaer as fallback if they need to ramp up production outside Sweden.
Why do you make a concern trolling thread for every single acquisition of US equipment
>>64833060True, best time to be offloading it.
>>64833068>some delayBruh its 8 yearsAnd no they dont even plan on making a Gripen in 2026
>>64833613The production line was inaugurated (whatever that means) in 2023 and they aren't using exactly the same parts as the Swedish Gripen, that causes delays. The FAB has been receiving Gripen NG since 2019.
>>64827950Peru is buying these to give to Argentina for they are their greatest ally.
>>64828150The Colombian contract for Gripen has already been signed, and the first payment has already been made. It's a done deal.
