Did warships between the 50s and 70s even have the capability to shoot down anti-ship missiles, or do you just accept death when the Termit cometh?
>>64831752>termitRetard, soviets did a lot pf gymnastics (including deceiving Nikita) to develop a family of supersonic cruise missiles like the Utes and Redut. In those times Raduga wasn't as important as Chelomey.
>>64831752Yeah. Terrier, Tartar, Seaslug were all decent SAMs for the time in the 50s, then SM-1s have been a thing since the 60s. Those Soviet missiles were fucking huge, like the size of aircraft anyway so they would have been pretty easy targets.
>>64831752>or do you just accept death when the Termit comethNo, you take evasive maneuvers and start spamming chaff like fucking crazy. The limited ability of fire control systems in that era to reliably target missiles also meant that the seekers of AShMs of the era were also rather finicky. Though obviously it was still a pretty butt puckering prospect.
>>648317521950s, no way. Missile tech was too primitive. 1960s? Big maybe. The oldest missile which I am aware of shooting down such a target is the british Sea Dart, which was put into service in 1973https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Dart#Persian_Gulf_War_(1991)Early SM variants entered service late in the 1960s, but I doubt these would have managed to hit anything, given the US track record with guidance systems at the time.
>>64831752It's not like AShMs in the 50s were small.
