is it in a torture situation or a shootout? i can only come up with something stupid like shooting up someones liver/kidneys or something along those lines

Pull the trigger. The bullet will tear its way through their intestines in multiple places and exit the body after passing through the pancreas on its way out. The extraordinary volume of extremely hot gasses that are forced into the abdominal cavity will do just as much, if not more damage, rupturing the intestines in multiple other locations, likely destroying the bladder and prostate due to proximity. This carries a fair chance of severing the major abdominal blood vessels which would lead to a fairly quick death via exsanguination. But since it's a story you can just say the victim got really unlucky and those vessels were not severed. Even with immediate medical treatment the victim is going to die slowly and painfully. The intestines have been destroyed beyond salvage. The abdominal cavity is full of bacteria that don't belong and are seeping into the bloodstream. Even if sepsis is prevented or survived the victim no longer has the capacity to absorb nutrients. Theoretically they could survive off of IV nutrients, but is the victim the sort to be able to get that level of medical care for the rest of their life?There's the classic "shoot 'em in the dick and let them bleed out slowly." But that's survivable with immediate medical care..22lr to the spine, right at the back of the neck. It won't kill them, but it will leave them permanently paralyzed.

We just had some 20 year old in the ICU for a couple days who got shot in the abdomen and the arm during some sort of domestic dispute. He made it through the ED, but his circulation was so fucked up he lost both of his legs, still never regained consciousness, and finally ended up dying anyway. Accurate and quick assessment of injury is the most important part of treatment for this reason. Much more than fancy techniques or technical skill. ER doctors would take better and more portable scanning equipment over a LUCAS any day. The most important thing they could do to ensure the guy dies slowly and in pain is to delay him getting care - not injuring him in a certain way.Have two guys grab him from behind by the arms and drag him behind a building to stab him. That's much more a cartel's MO than a driveby.
