The funny thing about .50 BMG is that its technically LESS restricted federally than most calibers, you can legally buy any kind of .50 BMG ammo that exists, including real actual tungsten core AP. Brand new production can be sold to you directly. Because no pistols exists for .50 BMG, it is allowed to be sold as "AP" direct from factory to you.

Retards making pistols in all kinds of rifle calibers is what fucked us over on AP ammo sales for 99% of calibers. You can also buy factory new AP ammo for niche calibers like .338 Lapua but its super expensive like $15 per round+ due to very few people shooting .338 Lapua. .50 BMG AP is much cheaper due to economies of scale and being an incredibly common and highly produced military cartridge as well as a commonly used civilian cartridge for long range shooting.

.50 bmg is like right around the DD limit where it isn't federally regulated. Like anything bigger than that is either a DD or it's specifically exempt for sporting purposes but .50 bmg isn't regulated because the law says >.50 not greater than or equal to .50

When I was stationed at Fort Bliss we had 100% ammunition/brass turn in requirements specifically so that there was no chance of ammunition being stolen. If we didn’t return 100% of unused live ammunition or expended brass then the DA 5811 had to go all the way up to the division commander for approval.
I have personally had to rake through El Paso desert sand under the August sun looking for lost 5.56 brass, instead of having to get lost ammunition paperwork signed off by a 2 star. Anything like large amounts of .50 or large caliber ammunition being lost would have gotten very significant investigations.
So that is to say, if cartels are getting 50 cal ammo from the US army plants, it’s not because a select few soldiers are managing to sneak any away from training. Any significant amount of ammo being skimmed off the top would need to be coming from higher up the food chain in the logistics process, or directly from the plant itself. Ammunition is strictly accounted for once it’s in the ASP/Unit level. It’s much more likely this ammunition is being legally purchased on the civilian market and then smuggled south, instead of being stolen from the military supply.

Thousands of guns U.S. sent to Afghanistan are missing

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- More than one-third of all weapons the United States has procured for Afghanistan's government are missing, according to a government report released Thursday.

The U.S. military failed to "maintain complete inventory records for an estimated 87,000 weapons -- or about 36 percent -- of the 242,000 weapons that the United States procured and shipped to Afghanistan from December 2004 through June 2008," a U.S. Government Accountability Office report states.

"Accountability lapses occurred throughout the supply chain," it says.

The Defense Department spent roughly $120 million during that period to acquire a range of small arms and light weapons for the Afghan National Security Forces, including rifles, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

The military also failed to properly account for an additional 135,000 weapons it obtained for the Afghan forces from 21 other countries.

"What if we had to tell families [of U.S. soldiers] not only why we are in Afghanistan but why their son or daughter died at the hands of an insurgent using a weapon purchased by the United States taxpayers? But that's what we risk if we were to have tens of thousands of weapons we provided washing around Afghanistan, off the books," Rep. John Tierney, D-Massachusetts, chairman of the House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs, said at the start of a congressional hearing on the report.

The attacks raised new questions over the effectiveness of the ongoing $16.5 billion U.S. effort to train and equip Afghan security forces. Officials from the State and Defense departments intend to request an additional $5.7 billion in assistance for the Afghan army and police in fiscal year 2009, according to the report.

The Obama administration is conducting a top-to-bottom review of U.S. policy toward both Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan. The president will likely make a decision on sending additional troops to Afghanistan "in the course of the next few days," Gates said Tuesday.

The Pentagon lost track of $715 million in weapons and gear funneled to anti-ISIS allies in Syria

The U.S. government failed to effectively account for nearly $715.8 million in weapons and equipment allocated to Syrian partners as part of the multinational counter-ISIS fight, according to a new report from the Defense Department inspector general.

The audit, publicly released on Tuesday, revealed that officials with Special Operations Joint Task Force–Operation Inherent Resolve "did not maintain comprehensive lists of all equipment purchased and received" to equip Syrian allies in the anti-ISIS fight (known as CTEF-S equipment) in fiscal years 2017 and 2018 due to a lack of a central repository for accountability documentation.

"Without conducting consistent inventories and ensuring proper security for CTEF-S equipment, 1st TSC could not determine whether items were lost or stolen which could delay the initiation of an investigation," according to the report.

As Task & Purpose has previously reported, this lack of gear accountability among both U.S. forces and other foreign countries has only fueled the capabilities of non-state actors like ISIS. In August 2017, Iraqi security forces turned up an FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile and launcher while expelling militants from city of Tal Afar; the following month, an ISIS propaganda video showed a jihadi sniper rocking a U.S.-made 7.62mm Mk 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle.

This has been a problem since the beginning of the Global War on Terror. Indeed, a 2016 investigation into 14 years of Pentagon weapons contracts by non-profit Action on Armed Violence revealed that of the nearly 1.5 million firearms that DoD provided to Afghan and Iraqi security forces, officials only had records for around 700,000 weapons.
