With these upgrades you'll end up with an ar that can possibly tackle any situation.

They're also widely available as surplus so cost pretty much nothing, and you kind of skip the molle gear queer phase.Especially as OP doesn't have a carrier of any sort. It's both practical and will give good grounding on what kind of carrier to essentially replace the vest with.
Also why assume OP will use the shotgun for home defence? The AR is by far and away the better option. The shotgun is for hunting, the most versatile hunting gun, shoot ducks, shoot a deer. Shoot API at a petrol stations propane tanks. Whatever. Point is that if you have an AR, the shotgun fills out those capacity gaps. OP can pick up any scrappy handgun as a backup weapon, carry gun. But you don't actually get value out of a handgun recreationally. A shotgun is a great recreational gun, easy for beginners, come home with a mangled duck and realise you have no idea how to pluck or cook it. Shotguns get used, first time shooters who buy handguns often give up on them in a week and it's just a paperweight which doubles as a hazard to kids visiting your house.
