I want to buy some ammo to test them out at the range. What should I buy? Ruger AR-15 and Mossberg Maverick 88. What accessories are must haves? Guy at the gun store had a weird mole on his nose so I didn't want to ask/look at him.
>>
don't shoot your guns, it wears them out.

>>64871953
Why would you buy an 18.5 inch mav 88 if you were just going to buy a 16 inch AR?
>>
>>64871973
because he wanted a shotgun?
>>
>>64871973
he did it for the price Anon, a new mav88 goes for like $270 and used one can be found for less than $200

>I want to buy some ammo to test them out at the range. What should I buy?
for the AR, the cheapest ball ammo you can find. and for the shotgun, the cheapest non turkish (I've had bad experience with them) loads you can find.
>What accessories are must haves?
slings for both of them and maybe an optic for the AR. other than that, they're fine.

Tempted to get a heatshield or pump foregrip for my PGF Mav, she gets hot and tends to jump around. Its super easy to change barrels on them in about 20 seconds so you might experiment with picking up different barrels.
AR probably maybe just experiment with optics, handguards, lights, bayonets, slings, magazines
>>
>>64871977
an 18.5 inch cylinder bore makes for a poor shotgun
>>64871981
you're better off buying the 28 inch or the combo

I think 18.5 cylinder bore shotguns are kind of boring. shooting a shotgun at a static target isn't very fun, imo and a 28 inch choked barrel works better for moving targets

For the maverick 88, I just put a light on it and changed the stock to a shorter one, and put a limbsaver on it. And a shell holder on the stock.

You should have got the maverick 88 with both barrels though.
>>
>>64871953
I originally bought a shorter stock for my mav88 but ended up putting the factory stock back on. It really is perfect out of the box imo.
>>
>>64871953
Don't listen to the shotgun autist that insists you need the 28" barrel, you did good. Get a $150 Holosun optic and sling for your AR, maybe a buttstock shell holder for your 88. Before you do that tho, take your shit to the range at least once to pattern the shotgun and zero the rifle. What ammo shouldn't matter too much, just don't buy G2s or remanufactured shit.
>>
>>64872615

>>
>>64872683
>shotguns that are good at shotgunning are bad
>shotguns are only good if they are good at blasting trash
ARs are better HD guns. The shotgun thing is just because they were cheaper and used to have much higher rates of proliferation back when more people hunted and semi automatic centerfire rifles were less common and more expensive
>>
>>64872689
Shotgun has the highest one shot stop potential.
>>
>>64872626
>>64872641
I'm short so I needed a shorter length of pull, hence the stock change.
>>
>>64872696
Not against soft armor kek. More seriously, measured over time, shotguns still suck; because in the time a shotgun outputs 1 accurate shot a SCHV rifle outputs 2-4 which multiplies out to a higher potential.
>>
>>64872696
only took Kyle 1 shot to kill that child molsesting grandma beating jew
>>64872715
I got an adjustable length of pull stock and the I think I ended up just putting it to about the same as the factory stock. It's still better because it has a monty carlo adjustment and I like the cheek higher and being able to adjust it for if you are wearing a coat is important

Congrats, should've gotten a handgun to go with the ar, but since you wrote first long guns I'll assume you already have one.
>What accessories are must haves?
First a sling, then a red dot (preferably a romeo5) if you got big hands, the magpul handguard feels really comfortable at least on my hands and it has some mlok for accesories if want to swap out the carbine handguards if not, go for a drop-in mlok rail do not get a quad rail as it adds unnecessary weight unless you put a lot shit on it and lastly a drop-in single stage trigger. With these upgrades you'll end up with an ar that can possibly tackle any situation.

Blue force sling
Trijicon ACOG
Battle belt with a mag pouch

A 2 point blueforce adjustable sling. I'm not sure how to attachment to that rifle. I don't see an attachment spot on the front of the rifle. : /

Iron sights that work are tits. Shooting fundamentals are where it's at. Save up for a Trijicon ACOG.

Battle belt with a mag pouch to carry an extra mag. Get a plate carrier. I think they're actually cheaper now and come with a mag pouch.

>>
>>64873598
shooting at a static target with a shotgun isn't fun. shooting at a static target with a rifle is fun. shooting at a moving target with a shotgun is fun. a 28 inch shotgun with chokes is better for shooting moving things than an 18.5 cylinder bore. shooting paper with an 18.5 shotgun gets boring, fast

>What ammo should I buy?
00 buck & hollow point 556 for home defense
buy rounds marketed as self defense ammo from like hornady, get a few boxes and practice with the defensive ammo and keep some handy for actual defense purposes
self defense marketed ammo from reputable companies is usually good & if it you do have to use it, it looks better in court to use self defense ammo rather than the "RIP Rounds: Overkill Expansion" ammo

What accessories are must haves?
for both, get a light and a sling
look up 2 point slings and learn how to use them, avoid the shotgun bandolier slings, they aren't actually that good
for the shotgun, cheapest upgrade is a velcro tape patch & shell cards, lets you stick 5-6 more shells on the left side of the receiver for easy reloading

please do read this, a mav88 was one of my first guns and i went through this whole situation already
id like to save you money & headache
for light mounts on a mav88, you have to be very picky
you cant easily install mossberg 500 foregrips, the maverick 88 has a cost cutting measure in it, there is no action tube. its an all in one part, you basically cant swap it out
the barrel clamp rails/lights are also bad, they seem solid but go and shoot 20 shells through the gun with it attached and itll have sheered the screw off holding it on or made the rail start to slide around on the barrel, either flying off or moving in a spot where you cant rack the pump anymore
recoil on 12 gauge is harsh, the gg&g rail mount is the only one ive used that doesnt go flying off but you also need to get a lightweight light for it, recoil is harsh enough itll still bend the rail on it

other thing is the flash hider on the ruger 556, get a grip plug for it that holds a spare battery for whatever red dot you get and batteries for the flashlight you pick
do this and you are golden, both are very reliable guns and an excellent base, you did good anon

You did good anon. Very good.

Run well with both guns. Leave them dry/empty or with dummy practice ammo when you move around at home to practice when you need them the most.

Also:

>>
Junk tier items
>side bandolier for shotgun
Just to increase its value for home defence, especially if you don't want to keep it loaded. If it's not in a safe, i wouldn't even store the ammo within sight of it lest you inadvertently arm a home intruder.
>slings
Two point, if only to carry both your guns at once. It's a big help with using a pump action shotgun.
>ar foregrip
Possibly monopod. If you've got no long range rifle, getting a really stable shooting platform with the AR is worth it. You'll use it all the time at the range.

Mid tier:
Button toggle flashlight. Ideally with strobe. Huge advantage in cqb, home defence. Knowing how to use one of these is in and of itself a skill worth having. Don't think you need a million lumen, it would only blind you and drain the batteries.
>lazer pointer
Doesn't need to be a particularly good one, or integrated with your flash light. The reason you have one is basically to detect if someone is walking in front of your point of aim at night, without giving away your position with a flash light. It's like a motion detector which I say it doesn't need to be very good quality, you're not strictly using it to sight a target
>tritium posts
Very hard to hit anything in the dark if you can't see your own sights. Especially if you don't have night optics.

If you wonder why all this seems to be about night shit, well that's because after gaining the capacity to shoot 12 hours a day, the first and biggest issue will be your ability to shoot in the other 12, and so that's your major advantage over other less disciplined shooters. Be that a burglar with a high point, who can't even see what they're shooting at because they have no flashlight, using the range at dusk when it's less crowded, shooting a deer at night with the ol' bait and spotlight method.
>>
>>64873597
I would tend to concur about optics. Cheap optics make it hard to learn marksmanship, are liable to break in times of actual need, significantly increase the profile of the rifle. Hence i recommend just tritium on the iron sights.

Battle belt? Personally not a fan. The battle belt is for weight bearing, only of real value if you're wearing full infantry kit. A duty belt is more practical generally, but as neither can be put on with one hand id actually recommend the Vietnam style carrier vests because you can put them on only one shoulder if you're really in a rush, they carry far more then a belt, it's actually only at the point you're in full infantry kit that they become problematic.

You can totally store 4 mags, ifak, sustainment, jump kit in a tactical vest, even if that's just your range or hunting kit and just lives in your gun bag. They're also widely available as surplus so cost pretty much nothing, and you kind of skip the molle gear queer phase.

Especially as OP doesn't have a carrier of any sort. It's both practical and will give good grounding on what kind of carrier to essentially replace the vest with.
>>
Also why assume OP will use the shotgun for home defence? The AR is by far and away the better option.

The shotgun is for hunting, the most versatile hunting gun, shoot ducks, shoot a deer. Shoot API at a petrol stations propane tanks. Whatever. Point is that if you have an AR, the shotgun fills out those capacity gaps.

OP can pick up any scrappy handgun as a backup weapon, carry gun. But you don't actually get value out of a handgun recreationally. A shotgun is a great recreational gun, easy for beginners, come home with a mangled duck and realise you have no idea how to pluck or cook it. Shotguns get used, first time shooters who buy handguns often give up on them in a week and it's just a paperweight which doubles as a hazard to kids visiting your house.
>>
>>64883451
>Pick up a scrappy handgun
This. OP is a Glock 19 away from the ideal starter kit. You can slowly build a collection and upgrade over time but all essential use cases are covered. Then you can start getting into CC pistols, precision rifles, surplus, cowboy shit, etc. whatever tickles your taint.

>muh marksmenship
most people will shoot tighter groups with a red dot so it's like not super relevant you learn with a red dot instead of a specific style iron
>>64883451
>Also why assume OP will use the shotgun for home defence?
cause it's a security model. it's an 18.5 inch with a cylinder bore. most shotgun hunters, especially bird shooters are going to use a choked barrel that's like 24-32 inches long
>>
>>64871953

>>
>>64872121
>>64873609
Huh, you do the inverse of me, lol. I can always find 00 for cheap in bulk and take it to the range. I like the lower barrier penetration of #4 in an HD scenario. The 3" shells of #4 cost enough that I never shoot more than a few for practice. That, and they thump a good deal more than the 2 3/4" 00 shells.

>>64871953
If these are HD guns. GET ELECTRONIC EARPRO
>what?
GET ELECTRONIC EAR PRO.
Firing a rifle (let alone a shotgun) unsuppressed indoors is gambling on a one way ticket to deaf town. Store your ears with your gun. Practice slipping them on in the dark as part of drilling to get your gun ready. If you think this sounds like to much work, then come to peace with hearing damage, or get a silenced gun.

Other anons are right about the shell holder, but be picky about brands, fits, and reviews. I got burned twice trying to get one on my Mossberg 500. The cheap-o variant I had came with a non-swapable pump that impinged on the holder when installed.

>>64872013
Nigger are you really going to pretend that barrel length matters for poor-fag fun, or that this guy is ever going to fire more than 3 shells in a life and death situation? Its a budget pump gun. By exchanging 2 or 3 $100 bills, the anon gains the ability to physically remove a chunk of shit from whoever he hits.
