Making all of those things in house greatly expands the difficulty of manufacturing. To make an SKS from scratch you would need a mill, lathe, hydraulic press at minimum, those are just the machining tools. That doesn’t include the cost of tooling, which can be expensive, the cost of precision measuring equipment. Chances are if you were making firearms you would want more than micrometers and calipers. You would need pin gauges, bore mics, or if you are really wanting to be precise a keyence machine or optical comparator. Then there is the matter of staffing, paying for electricity, having computers and licencing for your car cam software(not that it cannot be done on manual machines but that greatly impacts the time and quantity that can be produced).So realistically, you run a shop, you can make rifles that have a large amount of mechanical complexity or you can make automotive components or even robotic components that are simpler to make and don’t require as much time and effort, therefore earning more. There is a reason why there are very few firearms manufacturers in Canada but many in countries like Turkey or the Philippines. This is just my perspective, but I have been a machinist for half a decade, making everything from medical components to industrial printing equipment, heavy industrial machinery to defense and robotics components and yes I did some machining with Pearce Armoury modding SKS’s back in the day.
