Why aren't ARs more popular for hunting? Is it just inertia and that they are seen as not being stylish? I get why older rifles weren't used. a Browning BAR, G3, FAL, M1 gararand, M14, Model 8, ect is going to be heavier and more expensive than a bolt action. But ARs are light and cheap
>>
because before 350 legend it was illegal to hunt with ARs in a lot of states dues to straght-wall cartridge restrictions.

hunting regs vary, some states and even different parts of states have restrictions on requiring straight wall, requiring minimum bullet diameter, or even prohibit semi autos or mags over "x" rounds, plus the AR may not be as optimized for hunting depending on what youre hunting
also using them for hunting is gay and real AMERICAN chads use lever actions

Many different and constantly updating hunting regulations. Capacity limits, varied cartridge restrictions, semi-auto for hunting bans, etc. I believe that soon, blue states will try and ban detachable mags for hunting, forcing hunters to use fixed mags.

>>64881930
You can convert an AR-15 or AR-10 to shoot straight-wall cartridges (if that's the only problem in your state).

Many hunters will buy a cheap firearm and use it for years. It pays off in the long run. In any state that isn't a desert, you can get away with just having a 12-gauge shotgun. The poor lads struggle to find good ranges, but they have it easy when hunting.

Yes, the market would adapt; the same way that there are California-compliant ARs, there would be gun designs converted to have a compliant version for any state that would do that. Hopefully, I'm wrong and it never happens.

Michigan (southern part of the state), Ohio, Illinois, Iowa (in the past, fortunately they gained common sense and now allow bottleneck cartridges), Indiana (on public land only, you can use bottleneck cartridges in private land), Maryland (in some counties), Pennsylvania (on two counties only), etc.

>>64882081
>Why? Why is that a problem that need banning?
Nowadays, the evil cunts banning/regulating guns aren't trying to solve problems; they are trying to harm the gun industry.

>>64882078
Delaware bans semi-autos for big game, and Pennsylvania bans them for all game (currently they are discussing eliminating this regulation).

idk, the way the law is written you can't have anything that shoots artificial light on an animal. I think it's to ban nods or lasers or something
>>
>>64882123
>it could be banned in one state
More likely the .223 rem (.22 cal) is banned more often than a bottleneck. .223 isn't ideal anyway when most shooters suck at marksmanship.
>>
>>64881920
>Why aren't ARs more popular for hunting?
They're extremely popular for varminting. However, they're illegal for hunting big game in a significant chunk of the country because regulations are designed around the handicap of the lowest common denominator and the AR-15 runs afoul of basically all of them.

>Straight-wall laws
"I'm going out west one of these years so I'd better get some practice in with my .300 WM" *hits farmhouse in the next county"

>Minimum caliber/energy/bullet weight/bullet construction requirements
"Yeeep, this 70gr pissin'-hot handload in my .30-06 should be just the thing for dem whitetails" *bullet delaminates*

>.223 specifically being banned
"No bro you don't understand my brother who was in the marines says that green tip is super deadly because it tumbles around inside the body and my AR pistol is super light and easy to carry"

>Mag restrictions
"I never lose game; if it doesn't drop where it stands then I just dump the magazine at it"

tl;dr we're not allowed to have nice things because of Bubba.
>>
>>64882270
.350 legend solves a lot of these issues
>>
>>64882256
>More likely the .223 rem (.22 cal) is banned more often than a bottleneck.
.223 Remington is a bottleneck cartridge. I'm not sure what you are trying to say.
>.223 isn't ideal anyway when most shooters suck at marksmanship.
If they suck at marksmanship, then no cartridge would help them (they'd miss).
>>
>>64882337
he's saying more states have minimum caliber requirements than have straight wall requirements
>>
>>64881920
Bolt actions are lighter and simpler. A lot of people like (or have to use) a full power cartridge, and an AR-10 is quite a bit heavier than an AR-15, and a lot more finicky.
>>
>>64882346
Oh okay, that is true. Still, the hunter is getting fucked either way.
>>
>>64881920
They are somewhat popular for hunting already. Part of .350LGN's idea and appeal was that it fits in AR15s, which works better for some game.
However, many people just want more traditional hunting rifles for various reasons.

>>64881930
A few states have such laws, the vast majority don't.

>>64881978
I mean just don't fucking bolt on a bunch of shit like you're gonna kick doors in Iraq, you can leave things pretty bare.

>>

One of those flat ones, they're scurred of stray boolits. Thus you see a lot more shotgun hunting there, also stuff like the Savage 220 slug rifle.

.350 Legend and .360 Buckbreaker were partially meant to give a good and roughly comparable rifle cartridge to those states.

Bans on using caliber likely to wound deer and fuck up bag limits.

Poor balistic performance, unless your AR was set up for it, at which point the cost becomes silly. None of the advantages of the AR platform really being relevent.

Better options in battle rifles, at least historically. Better options in rifled shotguns, civilian pattern intermediates. Purely based on cost, for people who didn't have a dedicated hunting rifle.

Lack of trust in the AR platform where hand loads and hot loads were concerned. While very reliable, the AR reviever and upper aren't necessarily strong.
>>
>>64883339
Ballistic performance will depend on what you hunt. Some people say .223 isn't enough for deer, but there's more to .223 than M855 Ball and 16" barrels, and there's more than one kind of deer.

>>64882967

I’ve shot a deer with 5.56 just because I was borrowing my buddies rifle that day and was very unimpressed by the result to the point when I did buy an AR I got an SFAR in 308. I had mediocre results with a 6.5 bolt action as well. At this point I’m firmly in the 30 caliber camp when it comes to killing anything the size of an adult human and up.

NTA; honestly, most people want to hunt with what they already own; my brother-in-law still hunts with his 12-gauge shotgun in Pennsylvania despite the fact that he's now allowed a rifle because he just wants meat, not to have to collect half a dozen guns to partake in hunting. These silly and ever-changing restrictions force people who want to enter the hobby to have to buy a whole new gun. We need hunters now more than ever, but it's become a pain for someone to learn the ropes; boars are destroying tons of crops, and deer are rapidly expanding the desert.

Right exactly. If you already have a rifle for hunting, you probably arent in a hurry to go out and get an ar for the same. At the same time, someone with an ar is probably going to want to use it for hunting if they decide to get into it after the fact, but there are less opportunities for doing so and they basically all require buying another upper at the very least. At which point, you're likely to just buy a dedicated hunting rifle

What? The AR platform is wildly popular for hunting. Remington was selling them in woodland and mossy oak a few years back. Probably still do. 5.56/223 is pretty minimalist for deer. Definitely leaves you wanting on the long angles and through bone. The BAR is a popular hunting rifle as well. You do know there is a civilian version still used today. The G3 and FAL aren't very popular for hunting for obvious reasons. The Garand has been used for years hunting. As has the M1a/m14.
You started with a false premise. People have and will hunt with anything they like. Most people now just drive an atv to a stand and sit in a tree waiting for a deer to come and eat a crop or bait. You could hunt with a punt gun and it wouldn't matter.
>>
>>64889396
> You do know there is a civilian version still used today.
Nobody hunts with the Ohio Ordinance one (though it’d be based if they did) and the rifle that Browning sells as the BARis not in any way shape or form an actual BAR
>>
>>64882244
why would I? it's got iron sights on it
>>
>>64889418
so why are you comparting an AR with an optic to a bolt action with no optic?
>>
>>64889396
>You do know there is a civilian version still used today.
the browning BAR literally has nothing to do with the 1918 browning automatic rifle. They only share a name for marketing purposes and because brownings grandson or great grandson helped design it and because the first model came out before FN rat fucked Browning's son or Grandson out of ownership of the Browning company. Not that Browning really made anything. That company was basically just a brand name that got guns and other items from FN and other subcontractors and put the browning name on it
I'm gunna assume you were talking out of your ass for the entire post since you think the browning BAR is related to the 1918. hell, it didn't even come out until 1966
