Recently bought a lovely English Parker Hale 1100 .308 with a 4x Pecar scope, see pic related. It is a laser beam out to 300 yards.I am a noob to shooting further and have a 600 yard range day booked soon, is a 4x scope not good enough or am I just being a pussy?
>>64888930I always hear the >1x per 100 yardsthing, but people literally shot high power matches out to 600 yards with iron sights only until 2016
>>64888930Depends on target size
>>64888947>people literally shot high power matches out to 600 yards with iron sights only until 2016Yeah, on a 67x72 inch target frame with a 36 inch aiming black. There is 0 chance anyone is using irons to direct effective aimed fire at a man-sized target beyond 250-300 yards, and that's under absolutely perfect conditions.
>>64889078You;re full of shit and can't shoot people can do this with muzzleloaders at 1000 yards using iron target sights (and have been for 100 years) (go look up a vernier sight) let alone centirefire modern guns. Luv me scopes and shooting flies on targets at 100M with a 22 but u can't shoot and don't know the sport. THe main problem people have everywhere is good 1000M range access
>>64889078Anon, it's perfectly possible to hit man-size targets at twice that or more and especially so on a static range. Have you ever seen someone with REALLY good eyes who is also an experienced rifle shooter?
>>64889101You don't even need good eyes
>>64888930I got a viper in 3-15 power for medium ranged targets out to 600 yards or so and maybe out to 1200 yards when I get good at range finding and shooting in general, and it is kind of too much scope for me. In hindsight I think I should have got a 2-10, but such is life.
>>64888930>is a 4x scope not good enough or am I just being a pussy?Depends on how skilled you are, how big your target is, what reticle you're using and what "good enough" means to you.. I have an old Brno that will cloverleaf at 150 yd but the 4x scope it came with has a German post reticle which is fantastic for shooting durr-sized targets out to point-and-click ranges and capable enough for smaller targets inside of 150 but past those ranges it's basically worthless because the post covers up what I'm shooting at.Overall I would say just b urself and have some fun; if you get a taste for it and decide you want to get into precision shooting then you can easily cut your teeth by slapping a decent mil-dot scope on your P-H and getting in some range time.>>64889078pic rel.
>>64888930Ignore the whole 1x per 100yrds thing. It's a retarded take that lacks any sort of validity outside of shooting contrasting targets at pre determined targets at pre determined ranges with a goal of "hitting it somewhere". Acceptable for plinking steel targets on a range, pretty much nothing else. Realistically you'll want 3-5x per 100yds depending on what sort of accuracy you're looking to achieve and how stable you can realistically get the rifle in your use case. This starts to fall apart past about 600 yards where the game of long range shooting really turns into a whole different animal for a variety of reasons. Personally I think 5x is too much for the majority of shooters without a tripod and good fundamentals. I like a goal of 4x with variable magnification. Drop it down to 2-3x per 100 and it's good for quicker less precise shooting or lower light conditions. Push it to 4x if you've got a stable position and are trying to push more distance or more precision. Have fun on the scope market, it's a fucking shit show.
>>64889329> Depends on how skilled you areNot very. Shooting is a privilege in my country, so I don't get to shoot long range often due to land access etc. As long as it's on the target I'm happy. > how big your target isNot sure on this, doing a recce of the range soon. I have shot man-sized at 300 which was good fun on the 4x.> what reticle you're usingJust a standard crosshair, no markings.I think you're right, I'll just go for it.
Depends on what level of accuracy you are looking for. If you're talking about hitting a chest sized targets, iron sights can be used well beyond 300m if your eyesight's good. If you want to make sub MOA groups on paper, then an optic is needed.More magnification isn't always better. A good 6x or 4x scope will probably give you better accuracy than a shitty 12x. Things like the quality of the internals or clarity are important and often overlooked.
>>648889303-9x is good enough. if you get some 300ultramag then it'd be worthwhile to go higher.
>>64888930>1.4x per 100 yardsThat's perfectly fit for purpose hunting or plinking to 600.
