Safariland email for anyone curious. Basically the Protech 2240 is listed on the actual NIJ CPL listing all certified armor, but is "inactive." Safariland is pulling a Hesco 4520 and basically pretending it doesn't exist. Considering how good the Protech 2230 is, the 2240 is probably a damn fine plate. Also, the Protech 2230 was discontinued in 2021, which is later than I thought. Good news for anyone who wants a pair, there should be more surplus coming as warranties expire. This also means the 2240s were made probably starting in 2021-2022, so they should mostly still be in warranty (hence why they haven't been "surped" out yet).

>>64917386What the fuck?
>>64917386Was the 2230 ever certified? Is there a chance this is a fucking typo?
>>64917516Round two of armor companies pretending their best plates don't exist. I should ask them about the 9903 too but I don't have a copy of the 0101.04 CPL to press them with.>>64917519The 2230 was certified from the day it launched in June 2013 to when it was discontinued in 2021. No chance it's a typo. The 2230 and 2240 are listed right next to each other on the CPL for Safariland AND Protech. This also means the 2240 has been on the CPL, inactive or otherwise, for about five years. Long time for a totally separate entry on a constantly updated document, don't you think?
>>64917386Safariland is such a shit company now. Every company truly becomes such a scumbag.
>>64917568Can't say I'm surprised. It's the armor industry in a shellnut. Civilians are third fiddle customers, and we get only the meh hand-me-down models. The 2230 was exclusively a "blue side" LE-exclusive plate to begin with. It was never originally sold to anyone but law enforcement, made to address hot-ass reloaded M2AP at 3,510ft/s. The 2240? No idea, but it does exist and it was certified as a IV. The gap between the 2220, 2220-1, and 2230 is huge so the 2240 must be an excellent plate made to address some emerging requirement, hence why they're pretending it doesn't exist.

Is there a 10" round Level IV plate to use as a buckler? Asking for a friend.
>>64918095Not that I've seen, not unless you do a custom request to Gilliam or Jinwudun - which could be costly. 10" round is also small for a shield. You could ersatz similar by using MOLLE forearms and then literally strapping a 10x12 plate to it in a DMGEAR XL panel, or an 8x10 in a Sabado, but that requires heavy DIY so it doesn't sag.

>>64918130They don't ship to europe, sorry.
>>64918136lol>>64918130That'll be covered in the /gq/ mall ninja infographic when I get to that. Safariland / Point Blank are good here. Adept has some stuff that'll ship to Europe. Militech actually has some beefy, heavy, but decent stab panels that are also ballistic (so they'll be sweaty as fuck but robust).
>>64918134Jinny Wu has a 20" round shield but it's only IIIA. I'm sure they'll do a III if you ask and start waving a debit card at them since it's UHMWPE, so they just have to make it thicker, but the IIIA is already 7lb.https://jinwudun.com/products/nij-iiia-round-bulletproof-shield-20-1-inch-uhmwpe-with-durable-nylon-coverGilliam will make armor in "any size at any protection level" as a custom job. I didn't see anything in the infographic about slings I like this convertible one but $80 after shipping seems like a lot for a couple metal hooks and some fabricWhat are some good budget slings
>>64918357Absolutely do not pay $75 for that. I personally like the ferro slingster, but you can go to pretty much any website that sales gear to get one.
>>64918365is the vicker slings a meme or are they actually good?
>>64918368They're fine. Really any sling will do pretty much the same thing. The reason I like ferro is because the cam is metal and it's wider than the vickers, so it's more comfortable for me personally.
>>64918365What is wrong with the one I posted other than price and the business owner being a pig? Price wise the ferro slingster looks like it would be around the same price after getting mounting hardware I also have a 10% off coupon for the one I posted

>>64918458The ferro also has a wider strap, and padding. if you want one with that kind of profile, just go with a cheap idogear one like >>64918466 said. It's $15 and you can also get a 10% discount for that too. You're not going to use the super tactical, one to two point conversion feature. One point slings suck ass, unless you have a 2 inch dick, and balls that suck inside your body. You just hit yourself with it every time you drop the rifle.
>>64918512I wouldn't go below idogear though. Frenchanon here, I got this reply from PANGOLIN and it looks a bit sketchy to me:>My message >"Hello,I am contacting you regarding your NIJ 4 / VPAM 10 hard ballistic plate: HI/RA LIGHT™. On the product page, only the NIJ ballistic test report is available. Do you also have the report or certificate relating to the VPAM 10 standard? Furthermore, regarding the composition, you mention “ceramic and high-performance composite fibers for optimal resistance.” Could you please provide more details on this? Is it monolithic silicon ceramic, boron carbide, or another type of material?">Their answer >"Hello, The document relating to the NIJ standard is indeed the test report; this is the document that is recognized by insurance companies. The certification—referring here to the official NIJ document—is very rare in the sector in Europe, and more generally among most manufacturers, with the exception of a few large state-owned groups. What 90% of manufacturers in the sector do is conduct ballistic tests under the same conditions defined by the NIJ standard. In our case, these tests are carried out by an NIJ-certified American laboratory (authorized to conduct NIJ testing), under the same conditions as the official protocol.Furthermore, NIJ IV plates are made from silicon carbide and aramid fiber (such as Kevlar)."
>>64919914So they never tested it to VPAM-10, they just did one shot with NTS and called it a day. Also they don't know how their plates are made, apparently? This is cringe indeed.

FYI, catalyst surplus has the Protech X-CAL LPs on sale for $85 a plate down from a benjamin.Vendor has a bad habit of exaggerating armor ratings, Apex-style. This is not III+, it's like an ICW IIIA but no drop foam Hesco L211. As said before, it's imperative you use these with select IIIA soft armor, so realistically final price is $250 a set counting IIIA plate backers.https://www.catalystsurplus.com/product-page/x-cal-lp

>>64925479It's good for 7.62x51mm M80 (not the full six shot Level III battery, BFD is also sketch), 5.56 M855, 5.56 M193, and 7.62x39 BZ API. M855A1 is not officially listed so it's sketchy and will depend on velocity / soft armor used.>>64925503>Lack of drop resistance sort of suckI'd agree on "sort of" but these are decade old plates and we don't know how they've been treated, how they'll be packed in the mail, past rough handling, etc. Similar deal to the 4SAS4s except those were newly manufactured just without much QC.>Buffman video on them honestly very impressiveFor an $85 plate. He used very robust IIIA plate backers (100% all-aramid) weighing in at 1.125lb a piece. Final weight is 6.725lb (5.6lb for the plate, 1.125lb for the soft armor), which is extremely heavy for an SRT. BFD on the initial M80 hits WITH said, robust soft armor were 57mm, 70mm, and 70mm, which is really, really poor. Shot spacing was also fairly wide. Velocity was 100ft/s over NIJ spec on the M80, but that's not going to make or break the difference between 44mm and 70mm BFD. I think the drop test compromised them. These completely prioritize concealment and it shows. >>64925527Overall you get what you pay for and the mantra of "no free lunch" still holds true. If they're packed well and the mailman is happy, all good. Get good soft armor ASAP.
lol wtf these are garbage
>>64925503>New holster is in the works with actual retention>Chemlights are fine. Current one is from Defense Mechanisms. Only upgrade that may happen is switching to a MARCO set up for easier use>Why no folding antennas? I'd be curious to learn more. I'm used to using analog or P25 professionally, these are just GMRS for the time being.>Bipod in general or just the shitty magpul bipod? I'm keeping a bipod on the rifle and adding a clip-on thermal, but good bipods are expensive and not a priority>More TQs are there but not exposed. TQ in IFAK and pockets. >Low pro bag is a thought but useless without a team, so its on hold for now.>These mag pouches retain just fine, rucking, prone, running, etc. and I have never had a mag even come close to falling out. >Sling has one QD mount but I dont really see a need for a second QD. Can you elaborate? It's more weight and I don't really see a need for a 2nd QD>Big knife is not for fighting, its for survival/wood processing. It actually sits farther back then it looks, and it's on my dominant side so my non-dominant side is open for mags. Have thought about taking it off the belt and into my pack to free up belt space and weight.
>>64925597>Why no folding antennas? They work but they're usually just tape measure covered in rubber. Get a Nagoya or signal stick. Also switch out the radio to a DM-32UV or similar.
>>64925605>DM-32UVThat's the plan. Trying to get my buddies on comms first in general before upgrading. That was what I was looking at. Currently on GMRS for simplicity in training/licensing in the meantime. This folding antenna is a Nagoya NA-F30G.
>>64925619>Trying to get my buddies on comms first in general before upgradingAh, the great struggle of every man with a radio. I know the feeling.>This folding antenna is a Nagoya NA-F30GAlright, so it's not the amazon special tape measure variety.>>64925592Budget concealment plate bucko. Can't fit a lot of backer in a 0.4" thick package.
>>64925633It's literally a toss-up as to whether steel plates are better.
>>64925881I'll take this b8, let's see:Steel Pros:1. Cheaper at $35 a plate.2. Absolutely immortal versus drop testing.3. Vastly tighter shot spacing capability.4. BFD is typically very low unless the steel "back-spalls" off the wear face, in which case the rear spall coat will hopefully catch at about 30-40mm.Steel Cons:1. Still far heavier at 8lb for a decent Level III without weird cuts or nominal sizing chicanery.2. Spalling!Vulnerable to M193 at 3,250ft/s.3. No shot against BZ API. M855A1 is sketchballs.4. Can be popped by varmint 35gr .223 with great ease.XCAL LP Pros:1. Handles a wider range of threats.2. Lighter at 6.725lb, which is still the same weight as an Adept Colossus but with far less protection.3. No spalling.XCAL LP Cons:1. Major durability concerns.2. The mailman can kill it if shipped improperly.3. 7.62x51 M80 blows through it and has to be caught in the soft armor. Ergo you need to track down reliable and high quality IIIA which meets specific Safariland specs.4. Still unacceptably heavy for a lopro rifle solution. Hesco L211 mogs it but costs more $$$.5. BFD is unacceptable versus .308 threats. 6. Is more expensive, esp with soft armor. The Xcal LP wins because of the M193 and spall issues, but not with a lot of breathing room. This makes me want to make a steel plate infographic to see if ANY of them except the TAC3S family are worth a shit.
>>64925527>>64925592Probably worth noting Buff's sponsor, affiliate linked, for the XCAL LP video, Venture Surplus, had the plates for sale $59 a pop months ago around when the video came out.https://www.venturesurplus.com/products/protech-x-cal-lp-special-threat-plates-10x12-shooters-cut/I'd ding the video given a likely conflict of interest. He makes money when the plates make money through the link. We don't know if these were hand-selected for the test and the rest of the lot was in worse shape, or if there was a scrubbed earlier test, a la RMA ESRT, or some other situation. Buff's good but you can't trust him 100%. See RMA 1192 ringers, ESRT scrubbed fail vs BZ API, 4SAS4 retest, TAS Xtreme missing plates, RMA 1165 G1 / G2 getting special treatment on the drop test, no controls for nominal sizing bullshittery, etc. These are basically special threat 4SUS4s.
>>64926388What I don't get is why Protech, which seems to make decent plates, released such a dud?
My new Vertx 28L came. Thanks GamutAnon for your tips. Definitely smaller than expected in person but I can make it work
>>64926461So when this plate came out in the mid-2010s, there was a market for "dollar store SOCOM plates" that did what more expensive plates did but not as well.Hesco (formerly Reed) opened with the 1520, which was an ICW or standalone poorfag VelSys PBZSA. Heavier, not as robust, but much cheaper, using inferior Alumina ceramic vs much more expensive boron carbide. This X-CAL LP is a similar case, except it seems to be a poorfag MSAPI or LTC 28720 given the similar BZ API rating ICW IIIA (what IIIA?). BZ API is not common in the US at all, you IMO have better odds of running into M995 (much better odds with M855A1, which the XCAL LP isn't even rated for...), so the X-CAL LP was clearly meant for sandbox work. RMA had a BZ API plate in 2015. Hesco's L210 was rated for BZ API but no M855A1. Hesco also had a 3590 same deal. Maybe foreign militaries who we didn't want to give B4C-PE cutting edge plates to? >DudInterestingly the Protech 2230 (my plates) was a total fuckin' dud. In 2017, it was 1.5lb heavier than the Hesco 4600. 0.2" thicker than the Hesco 4600. $200 more expensive a set WITH the LE discount on the Protech and not the Hesco. At the time they were both certified IVs also rated for Level III. Pop quiz. Why, today, is the 2230 a better plate?
>>64923334velcro one-wrap instead of zip ties>>64925597identify the IFAK in some way. Is it the dangler or that big pouch on your belt? put the knife in the pouch or somewhere else, how is it not getting caught on your PC?
Here's another Protech dud. X-CAL AP, classic alumina-fiberglass design. 5.2lb ICW one of a few listed IIIA packages, so not just any IIIA will do. Single strike Level IV, zero multi-hit, at 0.49" multi-curve absolute do not drop. With soft armor you're at about 6lb or so. It's thin but total niche plate. Less than overt Level IV.https://safariland.com/products/x-cal-ap-type-iv-icw

I'm kicking myself for not buying that pair of Hesco 4800LVs on fleabay for $350 cuz SOMEBODY couldn't make the rent or whatever.
Also, because most people don't know this part of the "RMA sucks" lore, here's the screengrab from several threads ago about the RMA ESRT. Thanks to the anon who saved it because I actually never knew about this. So the RMA ESRT is rated for 7.62x39mm BZ API. Buffman tested it against 7.62x39mm BZ API from Yugoslavia and minute differences in construction resulted in it defeating the plate -in THEORY, so RMA threw a fit and he wound up redoing the test. Also possible the plate was made on a Monday and just wasn't up to snuff. This is of course 100% on RMA. When you say "BZ API" you need to ensure it stops every single kind of BZ API because the combloc factories weren't consistent for shit. Other example is B-32 API. Relatively few people know there's a B-32 and a somewhat better B-32M. If you say B-32, you better mean B-32 and B-32M. Good manufacturers build their plates with some headroom so if the ammo is a little hotter than average or there are incremental improvements or regional variations you're not shit out of luck. Sorry, Hesco.AR500 got flak for the same problem years ago when their III+ steel was rated for 7.62x51mm Black Tip, thereby implying AP. In reality it was just 7.62x51mm with a black sharpie tip but it clearly implied at least M61 AP - which is like diet M2AP, and which is far outside the capability of most steel plates that don't weigh twelve pounds sans coat.

>>64925881>>64925945and I did. The state of the steel plate market is actually pretty rough. Everyone decided to go premium, but Highcom's got a mighty fine sale on the not-AR1000 AR1000 going on. The AR500 is super cheap but discontinued, and the M193 standoff is frankly sad.The AR1000 is still unacceptably heavy and the spall coating needs to be thicker, AND it suffers from nominal sizing chicanery, but at the moment it's probably the most workable plate in pic related. No M855A1 rating. Buff tested it, it's sketchy with M193 above 3,300 (loses around 3,350) and won't stop A1 reliably unless it's below 2,900.The X-CAL LP still kills it unless durability is paramount. It's roughly a draw price-wise given the Highcoms need spall bags and the LPs need specific, very good IIIA or they aren't going to perform. One advantage of steel is that backface deformation on good steel is less than 10mm, sometimes fractions of a millimeter. Behind armor blunt trauma will be significantly lower than the abysmal 70mm Buff got with the X-CAL, but is that really worth the weight / loss of overall protection when you can reduce ceramic BABT with a trauma pad?

>>64943485Yeah, it first came up weeks ago in the Gilliam 8002 test video by 3RBallistics. Buffman is of the persuasion "THOR" is garden variety mild steel core ammo. I'm inclined to agree. You cannot punch an uncompromised standalone Level IV plate with 7.62x39mm steel-core AP, absent hitting a cheat ring. It can only be done with tungsten core and that relies a lot on plate composition. Emac's is shoveling shit.
Guy on fleabay has the Protech X-CAL LPs down to $65 a plate. He has ten so there must be some kind of inventory purge. M993 is the most immediate round which has a shot at the 2014Gs and 2230s, and it'll need to be hauling ass for the latter given the 3,500ft/s M2AP v0. And then there's the 2240, which may or may not be the one plate above the Colossus unless my working theory is right and it's just the 2230 with an UHMWPE backer. What's probably happening is that they're bitching about weight (justified) and switching to lighter plates even at the cost of extra dosh. FrenchAnon here, I’ve continued my search for good European ballistic plates and came across this small French brand. I contacted them and asked for their test reports, and they sent me ballistic test results equivalent to NIJ IV and VPAM 10. The plate is available in several material options. I specifically asked for the results for the LORICA V3 Bravo / SiC (a kind of shooter cut). However, they sent me the results for the same plate in 10x12 format (in SiC) for the NIJ test, and for the shooter cut version (in B4c) for the VPAM test.Do you think this is a legit plate?
>>64949567Common anon hallucination. Breaking news, people do things to save money for larger purchases they don't for small ones. Who's saving $1.50 on canteens? I'm unfamiliar with the brand, but it looks like some of their plates won't deliver until as late as august which is IMO odd. >>64949567>If buying a fucking $10 canteenLook at mr bigbucks here.
Daily reminder that if you wait and get adaptive pricing on a pimp cloak you get $12 or so off, which gets you a $10 canteen plus a bit for shipping.

>>64953371>It should be drastically closer to 5+5+1+1>If youre doing it for a living/voulnteering its well worth spending money in not giving yourself 18lb in platesI agree with you here. I think if we took a census the average person here is running no more than $500-600 in plates. Ergo you need to compromise somewhere. 1. Weight2. Durability / sizing3. Protection
>>64953525>You can buy a litany of lighter weight platesAnd end up sacrificing something along the way. Money or protection. No free lunch.Lighter IVs often come with compromises. The lightweight ones like Hesco 4800s and LTC 26310s are downright flimsy.>7.5lb in current year is the result of poor planning.Or being concerned with serious threats in the year 2026. Weren't we just hyping up hybrid-case 5.56 and 7.62 a few breads ago? Also, if you're actually buying Level IV because you're worried about reloaded M2AP, you need to be worried about it a lot faster than NIJ spec.A better plan is to have multiple sets of plates so you can go up or down based on the situation. Ideally three. less than overt, generalist, contingency.>Also 18lb is usually 2x 9lb steel plates when people are poverty postingWhich is actually pretty sad considering those 9lb steel plates are only good against M193 up to 2,800ft/s but select 7.5lb ceramics stop M2AP at 3,510ft/s. Hell, there are ceramics which stop .50 AP that are the same weight as those steel plates.

>>64951494Anyways, to get back to this because the armor debate got way off topic, have you considered a pair of Hesco U210s? 4.1lb a plate, standalone, better than the X-CAL LP in every single way except price, $1,800 a pair. They piss over 44mm BFD versus 7.62x51mm M80 but handle M855A1 well. It's like 48mm versus 52-70mm for the X-CALs. Final weight is 8.2lb for the set, less than half what you're currently doing, versus 13.45lb for the X-CAL LPs A2 was really liking. Sides are 1.37lb a pop (can be hard to source) if you want those back in, so 10.94lb.If you can't swing that much, turn to the Hesco M210 or L211. I would not step down to the T212 (it hard-loses to 7.62x51 / 54 threats by virtue of a weaker backer) or the old L210 (same deal). T212 is a poorfag type street plate. The special threat plate market is kinda Hesco's bitch so that's why all of the above are Hescos. If you're a baller, step up to the VelSys PBZ-SA. Do note that all of the above will get demolished by steel-core .308 or 7.62x54R AP, so keep your 7.5lb business for contingency purposes.
Are Hescos the only /k/ approved plate

If I had to rank the manufacturers off the top of my head, it'd go like this.>TIER 1: DEAD NUTSTencate / Integris (perfect reputation, no recalls)>TIER 2: MOSTLY EXCELLENTBAE Systems, Ceradyne, Cercom, Safariland / Protech, Leading Technology Composites>TIER 3: GOODHesco (they have four models you should avoid and three you should exercise serious caution with, but are otherwise fine)>TIER 4: Everybody else.
>>64926388Checked, are the 1165 as bad as they say?

>>64953846It's not horrible but has several issues.1. The plate is not actually 10x12. It is a nominal 9.5x11.5 with bottom corner cutouts so it has even less coverage. The difference sounds small, but when plates only cover a fraction of your body you need every bit you can get. It's fundamentally no different than Chinese plates running a foam cheat ring, except the ring is invisible.2. Zero drop protection. The plate has a crack arrestor but zero foam. They blocked Buffman from ANY drop testing on it. Like the 4SAS4 and other plates, if this is mishandled in the mail and not packaged appropriately it could cause issues.3. The risk of RMA's past quality control. See pic rel, the 1155 NIJ suspension, why none of their current ceramics are NIJ certified, and all the people on reddit complaining about plates with torn covers. If you make the 1165 SAPI M so the sizing is honest, it's basically a crappier Longfri 4SiCMH.
