Recently picked up this Type 38 for pretty cheap, all matching # and has a dust cover and bore is still in shoot-able condition, what should I begin to learn about Arisakas, I know I'm going to have to learn loading for this caliber but any tips would be helpful
>>
>>64921347
Very nice.
Are you wanting to do more Arisaka research cause you want to buy more? One of the biggest Arisaka knowledge things you can have going to a show or when buying is to be able to ID the difference between a purpose built mil-issue rifle and a school/training rifle.
Otherwise, learn to reload 6.5 although there is still plenty of Bannerman and Norma online.
>>
>>64921382
It's pretty simple to ID the actual military rifles. They always (well, 99."9%) have their model designation marked on the receiver ring.
>>
>>64921347
You don't really have to trim 6.5 brass because of the chamber design.

The gun shows here rarely have Japanese rifles, the only two I've seen were a sporterized arisaka, and a Type 18 rifle. I think what I should've written was the reload quirks as >>64921890 explains, as this would be my first rifle (among my 8mm) I would like to learn handloading, but I was seeing that some 38's on r*ddit had messed with the brass.

How is Bannerman and Norma 6.5 with the 38 other then the price being high?

Grandad's IBM carbine.

I also have his surplus colt 1911 and the associated paperwork from when he got it. He paid $17 shipped.

No, because in typical boomer fashion, they either sold it all to make a quick buck or moved to the other side of the country and refuse to talk to their kids and grandkids. We used to be able to discuss firearm legislation/politics on this board, it changed about the time that /pol/ overtook /b/ as the flagship board for 4chan. I get why they want to avoid /pol/ style discourse outside their containment board, but you’d think we should be able to discuss things that are pertinent to our hobby. Especially since the mods allow anime and video game threads here as long as they are gun/military related.

Don't worry, republicans would ban all your guns tomorrow if they thought it would swing enough lefties to vote for them too. We are a year into the promised "golden era" and the only thing we got with house, senate, presidency, supreme court, popular vote control is a completely gutted hearing protection act (they apologized for not gutting it even more) and a free forever war.
No additional 2nd amendment rights legislation anywhere in sight. Numerous new states trying to pass CA tier control measures.

Question:
en blocs/stripper clips is there a difference or an other term in English depending if it goes into the gun or not?

en bloc clips like the m95/garand/g88 style things that go into the mag are the one thing
but how would you call the swiss brown paper things which help to get the ammo quickly into the mag but stay outside?

in German there is Laderahmen (literally loading frame)
or Munitionspacket (from older literature, which would translate literally into ammo box but it means ammo bundle like in an en bloc). both go into the gun.
the swiss call their loading thing simply Lader (loader).

Stripper clips and chargers stay outside.

the Luger is my gramps sidearm from ww2, which he never fired in anger because he was a Luftwaffe bomber radio operator. after he got shrapnelled over England he was a supervisor for installing Radar stations.

the FN High power is from a cop whos a friend of my dad. he is one of the few non americans who got the american investigators award for solving an international industrial espinage case. it was the chinks, of course.

its the massive gold Franz Josephs medal in of the highest (6th?) order.
Great gramp got it ww1 as one of the ca. 150 recipients from the Emperor (out of austria hungarys 45 million population back then). he was a field surgeon and sewed together countless men, and he invented a field hospital / portable x-ray device together with the Conrad Roentgen himself.

Anyone have experience with S&B .303 British? LCS has a bunch of both 180gr FMJ/SP and 150gr SP for $40 a box plus tax. I have seen poorer performance with S&B .30-06 compared to PPU .30-06 before so that is why I ask.
>>
>>64959007
The Chilean M95 conversion was done with a soldered-in chamber insert. Sometimes propellant gasses can erode the solder and cause the joint to open up and the inser to back out, causing headspace to shrink. There was a great cross section of a rifle suffering from this symptom on the old Dutchman Swede Mauser website, but the link seems dead now. Proceed with caution: wear your eyepro.

Looks nice.

Last S&B 303 I shot popped a primer in my SMLE Mk.III*. Never had it happen with Greek, British, South African, US commercial or PPU. I recall that S&B didn’t champfer the rear of the case rim like they are supposed to and so you can get rimlock easily. IDK if that’s still the case.

In picrel you see german Mauser type rifles with the 98 action, which was copied in the Springfield 1903 rifle.
from top to bottom:
-haganah/idf czech production k98 in .308 (your masters rifle)
-bnz/Steyr no letter prefix SS contract, produced in the KZ Gusen/Mauthausen (a rifle used for the culling of your masters)
-ar 42 / Mauser Borsigwalde, all numbers matching, no postwar marks, pristine condition (you will never see or touch such a thing in real life)
-ax/Ermawerke russian capture (a rifle used in the culling of your beloved vattnigers)
-haer norge k98 in 30-06 (double aryan, eats ice bears)

-bayonet with the Heer/Infantry portepee is numbers matching with the ar 42
-bayonet in the far left is a bym stamped ultra rare one from Ferlach
-bayonet crossed over far left is non numbered came with the SS bnz

The Luger is an S/42 G stamped 1935 Mauser production.

now show me yours.

my range has a deep top open concrete trench right under the targets.
targets are on wooden frames which go up/down into the trench on a chain
so you can always drive out to the trench, walk below the target line and change your targets during life firing.
weekends when the range is busy, you get an idea of what trench warfare must be like:
shots fired, les than a second later impact over your head into the target/sandhill behind it band-dum!
mud rains down, when retards hit the wooden frames splinters fall down, sometimes the sandhills ooze bullets out and they drop into the trench.
always someone shouting over the earpro.

whenever i take friend to the range i wait till the shooting is intense to go with friend into the trench, the face expressions when the bullets go in and the earth is flying around are priceless.

the m95 is a rifle of such a simple elegance
esp. the longbois
if elves/eldar whould field firearms
the m95 would be it
>>
>>64975769
>simple elegance
Have you ever shot/cycled one? They kind of suck. The bolts require quite a lot of force to cycle. If you load the en-bloc incorrectly and get rimlock it can warp the en-bloc in such a way that the bolt pushes the rim forward in such a way that the bullet sinks, causing the bolt to ram a bullet into the chamber and magazine. The nature of the magazine having no easily removable bottom makes the bullet nearly impossible to pry out without a screwdriver and it ruins the round.

The k31/k11 is a much more elegant straight pull. I love my m95, but she certainly has some problems.

Which pattern of the No.1 magazine? If it's the earlier patterns with the pivoting feed lip then you just rotate that out of the way and the follower can come out. If it's the #4 with the fixed feed lips you have to tilt the follower so it can get past the feed lips.

It’s one like pic related, no pivoting lips. Seems identical to my regular No1 Mk3 magazines (it might actually be one from a Mk3, since the Irish reworked these Mk1***s and added other Mk3 features. I’m on a work trip for a few weeks and don’t have the rifle with me so I can’t mess with it until I come home. But I know I tried rotating the follower annd pushing the ends down and it wasn’t happening. Maybe there’s a trick to it that I missed. I can remove the follower and spring from my No.4 and No.5 rifles without any issues. Maybe I’ll take pics when I get back if I can’t figure it out.

Commonwealth:

The parts I have are definitely high-quality. However, DK didn't make them. The kits were imported from Germany. Since the import ban, I don't know how much DK now does in-house.

I'm on the fence, though.
I might just sell the 44 kit and get in line for the next batch. Or, I might use the kit to make an MKB, seeing as how their MKBs will be really expensive.
I'm only in $3500 for the kit w/ barrel and reciever bending jig.

>>64992265
its wood and steel. keep it in a temperature and moisture controlled environment and oil the metal once a year. keep the oil off the wood.
Carcanos basically come pre-abused so its unlikely you will do anything worse than the 80 years in africa most of them went through

Then you are in the right place fren. How often do you shoot and hows your experience with that? Its going to depend on the condition of them in terms of how great grandpa kept them, if youll need to do any preventative maintenance or repairs.
But for bolt actions such as a Gewehr (im assuming 98) and a 91 carcano maintenance and post shooting cleanup is pretty simple. Bore cleanup will depend on the ammo you shoot, and minimal greasing and oiling on surfaces for moving parts/touch surfaces. In terms of complexity those two are very good starters
>>
>>64992317
>How often do you shoot and hows your experience with that?
I will admit that I have very limited experience shooting. I haven't been allowed near my grandparent's rifles and until now I haven't really been in a position where I can afford one of my own.
Proper cleaning is one thing I'm curious about. I assume any old WWI/II rifle will come with a good layer of grime, is it recommended to try and keep it that way? I think it would be a fun project to properly clean and shine the old rifles.
>ammo you shoot
I have maybe 30 or so rounds for the Gewehr s I'll have to get some more there. From what I know Carcano needs something special though it doesn't look too expensive.
>>
>>64992943
For cleaning, its going to depend on how the gun has been stored this whole time. Do you know if grandpa has been shooting it recently? do you have an idea of how he kept them? If he kept the Gewehr in good shape than you should be fine right out of the box, with the only maintenance being after shooting, with some oiling and a bore patch.

>From what I know Carcano needs something special though it doesn't look too expensive.
6.5 Carcano. You'll need clips for it too, but they are a patchwork of some work and some dont. compared to other surp calibers, it isnt too expensive.
>I haven't been allowed near my grandparent's rifles
genuinely curious about this one. Maybe a reason why you dont have good shooting experience. But we all started somewhere
>>
>>64992943
As long as they aren't rusted through, a good scrubbing with a nylon brush and your preferred brand of gun oil/cleaner will be more than enough. Might want to scrub the bore as well.

Wonder what was the strangest and most obscure use of a foreign rifle by the American armed forces.
>>
>>65000624
During the opening stages of the Korean War there were many US soldiers that worked closely with RoK units. As an emergency measure, many of these RoK units were using rechambered Japanese Type 99 rifles. It is conceivable that during the absolute clusterfuck that was US logistics, loss of equipment to the advancing enemy, and scarcity of western equipment in general during this time that some US soldiers had to use these weapons.
>>
>>65000624
IDK about the strangest, but possibly the most obscure use is that of ~100 Brazilian Model 1894 Mauser rifles acquired by the US Navy with the emergency purchase of the Brazilian protected cruiser "Amazonas" in preparation for the Spanish-American War. It seems likely the Mausers remained on board ship during its wartime service because when the newly-christened "USS New Orleans" arrived in New York she received a shipment from Remington-UMC of 50,000 rounds of 7x57mm Mauser ammunition on stripper clips and 25,000 rounds of loose 7x57mm ball. After the war emergency ended and the ship's small arms were standardized on the more common USN 6mm M1895 Lee rifle the Mausers were presumably sold as surplus. Unfortunately the only picture from that period of the cruiser's service I can find where a small arm is visible shows a US Marine with the Lee rifle.

IIRC there was a US .30-06 Chauchat but that's not exactly a regular use rifle. I want to say the British owned some Arisakas for navy use pre WWII but that's not the US. Ian mentioned both IIRC; not the most obscure shit out there but it's the weirdest I know of. I'm sure there's something else I know of but that's about all I can think of. Ian (?) may have mentioned a single use of Mosins (or some other odd rifle) by the US, probably US made, but man that's such a fuzzy memory it could definitely be completely wrong. I want to say it was a video basically about this topic, a "there's no way grandpa remembered that right" exception to the rule. I wish I had that video title memorized.

Yes. Heres the progress from today. But only just started. Hit the clay layer so its going to be a "chip away at it while im up to other projects" kind of thing

Do you have a thin needle-nose pliers? Wrap some tape around the jaws so it doesn't scratch the metal.

Goddamn man, living the larper's dream. Why not rent a mini excavator from a hardware store to dig it out really quick?

Because I started building the range platform in the space where I would've driven a mini excavator in to dig the trench and I dont want to wreck it to get one in. So we're using hand tools as god intended.

The plan is to pack a solid 3'' of drainage rock on the bottom and french drain out the side of the hill. The trench/MG nest sits on a hillside, so theres enough elevation to handle things +well above the water table. But the clay the way it is it wont make a huge difference. I'll be out there tomorrow, ill snap some pics and scribble on it to show the layout plan.

I dont have any more relevant pics so heres me threatening my turtles with a good time.

Is there anyway to get 7.92x33mm kurz? I haven't seen any of it for sale in ages

Boxes drop online occasionally enough to keep an eye out. But they go FAST so you gotta be ontop of it

I figured it was something like that, I see some for like over 3.00 CPR on auction sites but I figured thats just resellers

I should probably go buy the 8mm kurz that's been sitting on my dealers shelf the last 10 years at $15 a box shouldn't i?

So heres a quick sketch from a pic from today. The red box is where the MG nest/pillbox will go, the trench needs to still be dug along the red line route to its spot near that tree. Blue will be drainage direction

Could go the Khyber pass route and rechamber an AK. Hell of a lot cheaper and you (probably) won’t burst the barrel.

How do y'all stay abreast of surplus deals and incoming shit rods? I pretty much rely on /msg/ and word of mouth before I hear about what's suddenly available. I missed out on the Portuguese 1904's a few years ago but managed to get one of the nicer M1937As.
Do I just need to sign up for Sweaty Ben's newsletters?

>Boomer hate
I hate boomers. But I also know extremely based boomers, so I try not to instantly judge unless proven otherwise. That said, its pretty quick and easy to filter the based ones from the others so it isnt a huge chore. I am also at a point in my collection where it isnt dependent on shit boomers re-selling so theres that

>CMP
>>65034962
I don't blame the CMP, more so the boomers who buy their annual limit of (8) M1s per year and flip them at around 2.5x the cost, while also complaining about how "the younger generation is no longer interested in preserving history/2A". Its really a microcosm of that entire generation. I hope I can be a better custodian of the future than they were, but the bar is pretty low.
>>
>>65034962
To be fair to the boomers at the CMP, younger generations are either interested in tricked out AR/Glock slop like in their vidya or giggle switched Glocks/Dracos like in their music.
>>
>>65035205
>8 limit
the CMP was making so much money they raised it to 12 (twelve) per year. They have likely allowed some people to pull over 100 guns by now.

>>65035209
must be nice for them to waggle their finger at kids about their hobby while selling a $2000 fake garand. At that price you can get a really nice AR set up these days thats a million times better with zero hoops to jump through. kids aren't retarded or uninterested, they just know a bad deal when they see one. Thank you Eugene Stoner (PBUH)

>12 (twelve) per year
fuck me. I remember on FB there were a few boomers who would post in various M1 groups who would have dozens of M1s in their collections. On the other hand, out of all of my friends who expressed interest in owning an M1, or who own an M1, I don't think a single one of them has ordered from the CMP, despite my assurance that it's a pretty easy process. Maybe I should have ordered more. I have ordered 3 M1s from the CMP, and have owned 3 via private sale before that (one I gave to my dad on his 50th, and I sold my .30-06 rack grade after I got a .308 expert).
>>
>>65035229
I have a Garand from a non-ripoff private sale, and fuck going through the CMP. No I don't want to join a boomer club. It should be an immediate, no frills, sale straight to your door with no restrictions. Also anyone above the age of 50 should be banned, and if youre 25 or under, you get a discount.

The M1 seems to be almost legendary for Boomers even when they sometimes don’t properly know what it is. I have had guys ask me if both my SMLE and No4 was a “Garand”, if a Mosin 1891 was a Garand, and a guy who brought his M1 to the range didn’t know what pic related was.
>>
>>65036562
M1 Garand, hell of a shotgun
>>
>>65035205
There is no reason someone would be buying more than one a year other than to resell them. It’s so dumb that the CMP allows this.
>>
>>65037894
A lot of people were buying multiple so they could strip parts and assembly factory and drawing matching rifles.
>>
>>65035668
>No I don't want to join a boomer club
the /k/lub is long dead, but that was the time to do it.
>>
>>65034962
I got a service grade M1 for $750 back in 2019. The hoops they make you jump through are pretty dumb but I got a nice rifle mailed to my doorstep, so I can't complain.
>>
My Carcano M91 finally came in, from what I can see it needs a lot of cleaning. The majority of the metal is covered in a layer of thick brown grime. What's the proper method of clearing it up? I plan on getting supplies tomorrow. I'll post pics when the sun is up so I can get better lighting.
