I worked at a little store that went out of business because the state hates our kind. It was cool. Learned a lot more about guns and stuff. Most of the time I just played games. Every once in a while a couple of tatted up spics would come in and ask about buying guns with a felony conviction on their record. Sometimes you’d get that one guy who would come in asking for Glock ammo. Most of the people were pretty cool though. You know, if you aren’t a total dick then it can actually be pretty nice to have someone come in who knows nothing about guns and wants to own one.

Most of the people I met were good dudes. They were regulars and we’d shoot the shit or bring in guns to share or even go shooting. You get idiots sometimes, but probably the most dangerous I was ever in was some old dude who flagged me with his CC. Nothing in the chamber though. I only felt scetched out like one time.

After I got outta the service I wanted to go full instructor. There is a large subset of people that genuinely do not understand the concept of safety, in any way. Pointing guns at people on the range, leaving their loaded guns in the open and sometimes forgetting them at the range, so on so forth. Most shooters are awful shots, like shoot the ceiling 5 ft in front of them bad. We had an electrician basically on retainer because some idiot would shoot the lights out on a monthly basis, and we stopped giving out sandbags because they kept getting shot. People get mad that they don't have their id and now can't buy a gun and yell about it

I could complain all day, but when the place when out of business because every indoor range is operated by incompetent gerbils, I got out of the industry and went back to school and now I shoot exclusively on public land.

I'd say that something like a Kel-Tec P32 could be an ok choice for your mom.
Small, light, not harsh in recoil or noise (in fact, less loud than .22LR pistols, but while being much more reliable and powerful). Also has a fairly idiotproof trigger, and some people like to put lasers on them. The extended magazine with the grip extension could help with recoil control, though it'll make the pistol a little bigger.

Purse carry is NOT ideal, because women sometimes forget and misplace their purses, so that's not good if her gun is in there if she does that (or if someone does an old fashioned purse snatching), but on the other hand, that's still having her gun with her if she typically takes her purse with her, so better than nothing.
See if you can talk her into carrying it in a holster in a pocket or something like that, but if you can't, purse carry is still better than nothing. The P32 also has options for so called "belt clips," ergo a little spring clip which you can use to carry the pistol on something like a belt.

Well, it can depend on which kind of .380 you're looking at, for instance an oldschool Walther PPK in .380 is a rather snappy pistol, but there's more to the world of .380s than the PPK.
A full sized PP in .380, or something like the Beretta 1934 or Colt 1903 in .380 are pretty easy and mild in recoil.

Anon. Women don't get to have pockets. And if they DO have pockets on/in their clothing it is almost a guarantee those pockets aren't even big enough for a cell phone let alone a gun of any kind. Take some time to look at how most women dress; figure flattering shirts, and tight pants are common. There usually isn't anywhere for them to have a holster on their person, because loose and flowy isn't usually what they're wearing. Old women especially aren't going to be wearing clothing that is amenable to carry. They're going to be in slacks with a blouse or sweater.
I'd unironically advise her to carry an all steel j-frame with a shrouded hammer in .38 special and load it with semi-wadcutters or wadcutters. Why? Because, if you have to, you can shoot a revolver from inside a purse multiple times with very little chance of a malfunction. Being old, she isn't going to be a quick draw anyway, but she can remain aware of her surroundings and she can be sneaky. Surprise is a helluva weapon. A semi-auto will almost certainly jam after the first round. Revolvers have a simpler manual of arms so take a lot of the user error out of the equation. They're also easier to load for old hands that may be weak and/or arthritic.

One of my friends is a small petite woman like 110 lbs and 5'5 she can barely pull the trigger on the S&W 442 UC I just got and struggled greatly for like 5 seconds to even do it once. Shes 31 and "fully grown" as much as a she can be. She shot it one time with standard pressure 158 grain .38 Special "Norma Range & training" and it hurt her hand bad enough that it was stinging for a good while. mind you she has small delicate female hands. She carries a Glock 42 in .380 and it works well for her.

Any gun store employee that would recommend a DA only air light snubby for a woman is brain damaged. Not saying all women would have this issue as my other friend is much taller and larger than her and she can handle the snubby better but she also dislikes it due to pain when shooting and difficulty being accurate with the heavy DA trigger.

I can shoot my UC 442 pretty well as a 6'2 guy and train often but if I shoot more than 50 rounds at once it fucks up the webbing in between my thumb and index finger , the next week it will have a dull pain so I have to shoot a box or less of ammo at a time. J frames are great carry pieces for those that can handle them but they're really inappropriate for women.

Anon's mom is a 60 year old woman with no experience with guns, chances are high that she may struggle with a DA trigger, especially under stress. Also the weight of an all steel snub will work against her being inclined to carry it.

Also, something small like a P32 is flat and light, there's various ways it could fit in a woman's clothing (like in a blazer or in her waistband). ALSO, also, she still needs to practice SOME with a handgun, and it's gonna be way easier for her to handle a light automatic which doesn't have a million mile long DA trigger.

I worked in an LGS in California for about a year and a half.

It was a very challenging but rewarding job. Every single day we did business was us pissing in Newson's eye and the CA DOJ would fuck with us almost daily. We were basically not worried about the ATF at all because everything we did was so ridiculously over-compliant to keep the CA DOJ at bay that there was absolutely no chance of ATF seeing any problem with anything we did.

Customers were a mixed bag of course. A lot of people with little or no experience or many misconceptions. Business was booming because there were very few other gun shops around left to compete with us. We generally charged MSRP for things, but the excise tax really hurt. Still, people had to get their guns somewhere. Our bread and butter was ammunition sales. PPTs were a nightmare because they took double the work, we had to do them and constantly lost money.

The laws and regulations are extremely confusing by design. Having to explain them to people constantly was pain. Trying to apply logic to make sense of it only makes it more confusing. We tried to make things as simple for people as we could, but not everyone can comprehend a flowchart. The simplest approach possible is "if we sell it, it's legal, just double-check before trying to modify anything".

Pay was meh. I negotiated for a living wage because they needed me and I needed a fairly high income to keep my rent paid and it did accomplish that with little else to spare. Most gun stores pay significantly less. It's a job for people who are passionate about guns and enthusiastic to educate people about them all day, so it was a great fit for me but even with tons of overtime it just wasn't paying bills.

You can basically amass as much as you want over time (there's lots of people who legally own hundreds and who've never had any interactions with the law), but very few people tend to buy as many as 30 guns in one purchase, just because it's not realistically practical for even the average dedicated enthusiast, (imagine buying 30 powertools at once as just a homeowner, you might not even fit all of them in your car).

However, someone who bulk buys something like 30 guns in one single purchase can sometimes be a sign of a straw purchaser or smuggler. Not always, but it's something which really does happen.
The other one that happens is that someone just expects a coming buying panic, and they are thus buying now while it's cheaper, and hoping to turn a profit once prices go up. That isn't strictly illegal in itself, depending on numbers, but at 30, it's going to be an issue for you to sell them all off, because the ATF will look at that as you trying to engage in commerce.

Typically, these things aren't actual armed raids (that tends to require a warrant and some sort of reasonable suspicion), but if you're one of those guys looking for just a quick profit, and you start selling a lot of them, that's when the ATF will send a couple of dudes to ring your doorbell and ask to see the guns (and maybe ask for copies of bills of sale, if you have any), and they'll tell you that you need to get an FFL if you want to continue to do that.
