>>64944629It is incredible that they used to just allow children to walk up to stuff like this. Makes me sad that kids cannot have dreams of space anymore.
>>64945386Blame thirdies and muslims. I remember getting to sit in the cockpit of a 747 over the Atlantic on a United flight as a kid, something my children will never be able to experience.
>>64945445>I remember getting to sit in the cockpit of a 747Same, I distinctly remember the stewardesses coming round and asking if anyone wanted to go and take a look
>>64945445Saw the cockpit in a Pan Am 747 back in the 80s. LAX to Heathrow. Pretty cool.
Highly recommend the movie "Toward the Unknown".It's basically a showcase of Edwards AFB

>>64947412Its kinda ironic that Chuck Yeager outlived everyone playing him in the Right Stuff. Sam Shepard, kraut pilot that actually flew F-104 in the movie and pic related, guy who died during filming of the movie doing parachute stunts. He probably suffocated due smoke canister attached to his helmet and slammed on desert floor without activating main or reserve parachute.

>>64968997They have limited space, being gate guard at Edwards is in my opinion good enough place to display balls 8. If they are going to put a B-52 in Smithsonian, current gate guard in Kirtland AFB would be more deserving. It has actually dropped a live thermonuclear weapon. Probably most deserving airframe to be preserved would be one that dropped dominic housatonic since it is highest yield nuke US plane has ever dropped. Assuming aircraft still exists.
>>64969107There is no aircraft gate guard at kirtland. The SOW campus has a few helos and planes on sticks and the guard campus has a couple fighters but none of the gates have an aircraft.

this is only kind of tangentially related to edwards, but im a civilian and want to visit nellis. i wont go into detail but my great grandfather has some stuff named after him there and it would be awesome to see it and some of the baseis the only way to tour these places to be brought by someone that is active duty?im not a chinese spy i swear
>>64977196(idk about Nellis) I know that feel. Visited Florida recently and while in the panhandle wanted to daytrip for the Naval Aviation Museum. Found out that since it's an integral part of the base you can't access without some .mil flesh advocating for or giving you an entry pass.
>>64977217its unfortunate. I'll probably email the public relations again and try the base commander if im feeling really frisky. i mean my name is on their shit thats gotta be worth something
>>64977248Good luck
>>64978171thanks bud. ill update if anything happens. and obviously post photos if i can

>>64982776Fun fact about the YF-16s is that when they fist took to the skies, they didn't have much in the way of navigation equipment other than radio-nav. The plane was restricted to daytime flight only. They weren't even equipped with any exterior lights. If either plane had to do a cross-country flight, it was accompanied by a F-4 to lead the way.
>>64986982>EnterpriseDamn shame it never went to space.
nice YF-16 (and RF-4C) pics

>>64988652>skunk on the tailSo what would Skunkworks do with a 2-seat F-16?>chase plane for spook projects?>Have Blue?
>>64988652kino image>>64988826They do a lot more than solely "spook" dark work (which is a cold war urban legend characterizaation due to their knowledge and research from 1958 forward on 'stealth' low observables technology overall) and this X-62 is a flight control systems program that Lockheed / Skunk Works has much legacy experience on from the A-12 aka "blackbird" forward e.g. how to retain aerodynamic stability of an airplane at Mach 3 cruise.X-62 is also incorporating autonomous control aka robotic AI flight into the test program.

Wish I had a camera back in the day, but when I was in Highschool I was in Air Force ROTC in a nearby town and I spent a lot of time at Edwards because it was one of the closest Air Force Bases to us. I got to visit the Museum there a few times, and get guided bus tours of the flight line up to the NASA ramp and back. Plus, we'd go to the Airshow there as often as we could So I could nearly die from heat stroke walking onto the playa back to our bus. Shit was cash.
