because it was the front-line Navy bomber, the A-6 intruder programme is basically the story of evolving post-WW2 bombing capabilities:

>A-6, 1960
introduction of all-weather/night bombing capability with a CEP better than one German town

>A-6B, 1968
introduction of specialised SEAD bombing capability

>A-6E TRAM, 1971
introduction of laser-guided precision bombing capability, increased effectiveness against moving targets

>A-6E WCSI, 1985
introduction of air-dropped active-guided antiship missiles (Harpoon) replace laser-guided bombs for stand-off anti-ship capability and ever greater accuracy

>1990s
introduction of multi-role combat aircraft with integration of land-attack missiles (Mavericks) to the fleet

>CEP better than one German town
never let American war criminals fool you into thinking they are not war criminals
the civilians who died in American bombings of Germany were almost all deliberately murdered, in an attempt to terrorize the remaining ones into submission, which did not work
B-29 with a Norden bombsight had a CEP of under 50 meters
Enola Gay nailed its target from 31kft, first try

>Laser guided weapons
Don't you idiots realize wild, untested AND EXPENSIVE technology like this DOESN'T WORK? I designed the F-16 singlehandidly btw.
>>
>>64954125
>B-29
Distinction without a difference. Germany campaign was area bombing of entire civilian populations, both RAF and USAAF 8th. It was not precision bombing. B-26s (and A-20s, B-25s in some sorties) did precision interdiction strikes in Europe of hard and manufacturing, infrastructure targets, but even they were limited by altitude and bombardier accuracy.
B-29s were used for low altitude incendiary mass area bombing of several Japan cities, burned to a crisp.
All bomber aerial bombardment crews are war criminals by definition no matter national origin.
>>
>>64954183
I never said anything else. It was often claimed that bombers "missed their mark" but in reality if they could see the target they could hit it with pinpoint accuracy
all the carpet bombing was intentional
>>

>elite specially-trained bomber squadron can do it, that means everyone can
by the same logic, clearly the fact that not every German tanker could fight like Wittmann and not ever German general could fight like Rommel and Model meant that the Germans threw the war deliberately

idiot
>>
>>
>>64956671
>not every German tanker could fight like Wittmann
Germans never claimed German tanks were worse than they actually were so idk where you're going with that
it's not just the weapons anyway
enough documentation has survived that we could try "bomber" Harris and LeMay for warcrimes even now, just based on mission briefings and orders and whatnot
>>
>>64956721
>Germans never claimed that German tanks were worse than Wittman
correct, thus by that "logic", according to you, that means they were deliberately throwing the war

if you condemn (and convict) for Lidice you must do the same for Dresden, simple as
>>
>>
>>64960500
bombing Dresden is justified because it was used as a transport hub
if you want to condemn and convict for Dresden, you would have to condemn and convict the entire German general staff, because bombing transport hubs was one of the innovations of "blitzkrieg" that made Fall Weiss and Fall Gelb possible

>>
>>64960567
the justification was spurious and issued post-factum
it was known to allied planners that Dresden was full of refugees
this was a factor in choosing to firebomb the city
firebombs do jack shit against rail lines and roads btw
>>
>>64961680
>firebombs do jack shit against rail lines and roads
they destroy buildings very well, and the objective was to destroy infrastructure, not just to block up the roads with rubble and wreck rails, but also to destroy shelter that could be used by troops

when the USN had carrier air wings for attack
>>
>>64945624
>the A-6
was the carrier air wing's long range heavy strike fist (somewhat analogous to what the F-14 was as long range fleet defense interceptor)
It was the closest in that capability to the earlier A2J Savage, A-3 Skywarrior and (repurposed as reconnaissance) A-5 Vigilante strategic bombers, with additional interdiction and all-weather capabilities that 1960-later technology provided. It was also a more maneuverable airframe at lower altitudes.

> Pierre Michel Sprey (November 22, 1937 – August 5, 2021) was an American defense analyst. Working with John Boyd and Thomas P. Christie at the Pentagon, he was associated with the self-dubbed 'Fighter Mafia', which advocated the use of energy–maneuverability theory in fighter jet design. Sprey falsely claimed to be involved in the design of several military jets, including the F-16 and A-10.
>Sprey died August 5, 2021. He was found in a hotel room in Washington, D.C. wearing women’s lingerie, and amyl nitrate bottles, or better known by the slang term “poppers”, littering the night stand. He died of a heart attack, the amyl nitrate was ruled out as a contributing factor. He was also found with anal fissures and rectal trauma, but this was ruled out as well.

It's too bad that the USN fixed wing fleet carrier deck complement is down to just a few Swiss Army Knife airframe types.
>>
>>64961969
So? The existence of refugees does not shield a strategic target in a total war scenario. It barely matters in a brushfire war with total air superiority.
>>

Don’t have cable but I was watching something on Hulu or something about aircraft and he popped up. I recognized his nasally whiny voice, and busted up laughing. >>
>>64982757
S-3 could've been kept around also. Even if the plan was to kabosh the dedicated ASW role it could've been repurposed with slighty lengthened fuselage into a tanker and COD transport (the C-2 should have been kept in intermittent low-rate production and updates also like its parent airframe the E-2 was), and the E-warfare variant retained.
Entirety of post-1980s USN carrier aviation procurement and force strategy is beyond FUBAR.
