They arent widely used because they start interfering with other shit, like a 40 rounder on the front of a vest covers almost the whole plate, meaning you cant have an EUD, admin pouch, grenade pouch or PTT that people would normally put in that space. Similarly, on the belt a 40 rounder is tall enough that it will start to snag on your cummerbund. Historically countries that had an auto rifle like galil and AK users would informally issue R4 50 rounders or RPK mags to be carried in the rifle for responding to ambushes, you can see this practice recurring in Ukraine with D60s and similar, so it obviously has merit to carry at least one larger mag; but the practice never took off in the west. Even when appropriate mags are available in inventory we don't seem to do it, like I remember the M27 was originally supposed to be issued with surefire casket mags, literally never seen them fielded once.
I like to buy 20 round magazines because 5.56/.223 comes in 20 round boxes. Also, 20 round magazines I think work best for a home defense AR-15, but thats just my opinion.

I only use 40 round magazines for following reasons:- easier to handle than short 30 round magazines- better for using as monopod- more ammo carried for same weight, for example 8 full 30 round mags weight more than 6 full 40 round magazines and require more pouches- competitive advantage, rifle stages here are quite often 24 - 32 rounds and you are handicapping yourself if you run 30 round magazibes
I saw some guys load out in soon to be Russia, he had a stendo in his gun but carried regular size mags. Kind of makes sense 40+1 is good when the adrenaline hits and gives you a little more time to figure out what to do til you're able to reload. At least that's how I live with the fact I bought one of these along with my other dumb decisions, I like 20s at the range cause they don't get in the way and slow me down. I'm poor enough as it is, 1 box equaling one mag helps me track how much poorer I'm getting.
