Joke is that back in the 90s Russia actually offered China the MiG-29 as export fighter instead of the Su-27, since the Russians had concerns about giving China long range heavy fighters. But 90s Russia was in no position to negotiate and instead had to sell the Flankers for 50% barter trade even. China paid partly in toothbrushes and blue-jeans.
