Anyone ever made platinum bullets?
>21.45 g/cm^3 density vs 11.3 for lead, 9.8 for bismuth and 19.3 for tungsten
>much lower melting point than tungsten(more comparable to steel)
>can copper coat it so it doesnt demolish your barrel
The sectional density on these would be nuts, and it has a hardness similar to the lower end of mild steel so should offer some level of armor penetration. The only real thing prohibiting it is the cost and abundance of it, but for a tard handloader hobbyiest that shouldnt matter just to try it for the sake of it in a few calibers. I had my eyes on bismuth for a while but being basically a slightly worse performing lead for a higher cost for the tradeoff of being non toxic is meh, but the pearlescent look of the metal is cool as shit still
>>
Have you seen platinum prices?

Cost prohibitive, but I'm sure somebody has done it at some point just to see what happens.

Tungsten is the go-to for extremely hard AP. It's still expensive but obtainable and affordable enough to justify launching as a projectile.

I've never heard of it, but the irony is that these days it would be cheaper to make that than a gold bullet.
>>
Just what kind of gucci richfag werecreature are you trying to kill anon
>>
>>64973612
Pointless. It's a little bit harder than gold, making it awful for AP purposes, while gold is better for GP.
Yeah, uranium is still a decent penetrator despite being a little softer than tungsten, but it's still almost twice as hard as platinum.
Tungsten carbide with a 16 karat gold coating (AP) and solid 16 karat gold (GP) are really what you want.

I just want to see how high we can fly, even if only for a brief moment
>>
>>64973657
How feasable is tungsten carbide to shape and form? I was figuring platinum could at least be cast without too much trouble
>>
>>64973633
Crazy too, as 14 times more gold is mined than platinum. The rarer metal is almost 1/3rd the price of gold.

Not hard, you just need to use a different method. Carbides are sintered, not cast.
>>
>>64973627
Agreed. Tungsten carbide or tungsten heavy alloy are the current go to and current tungsten AP is so far ahead of plates there isn't a huge push to go further.
You want to kill XSAPIs or the Adept Colossus or Gilliam 8002? 7N37.
You want to kill the handful of 7N37 rated plates that exist? 7N51.
Are we smoking crack and there's some kind of super mega plate that stops 7N51? 7N49.
>>64973666
Satan, the machining costs are up there but it's totally doable. Tungsten AP predates WW2 actually.
>>
>>64973612
The closest thing I know of to platinum bullets that our poor asses will ever see happened on no other than Taofledermaus's channel with silver and gold. No, not in something reasonable like a 30 cal rifle or pistol, instead a full 12ga "diabolo" slug.

Otherwise we would use osmium or iridium for projectiles.
>>
>>64973612
might as well make DU bullets
>>
>>64974155
Just make natural uranium bullets. The difference in radioactivity is negligible.

they have

Is it jacketed or does the shoot just get to enjoy breathing in uranium dust?

it's a cunt compared to silver or gold and im not sure how precise it'd be using typical jeweler's methods. it'd probably need machining afterwards
>>
>>64974681
Its got a much higher melting point than gold or silver, its closer to steel so steel casting methods would probably work somewhat
>>
>>64974721
well yeah, but that's not really the sort of thing you can do in your garage. best thing to do would be to buy some round stock and turn it to shape, it'd be much easier and you wouldn't have to worry about stuff like porosity
>>
>>64973650
Elven vampires. Their powers of compound interest and long-term investment strategies make them immune to peasant materials like wood and silver, and gold is just too damn expensive for us working man hunters.
>>
>>64973666
Satan cemented tungsten things are usually done out of sinterings rather than being net ground into shape by diamond.

Discardind Sabot.
As in APDS.
Am I being autistic?
