I've never had to attack a dog. Dogs seem to like me. Not sure why. But I've never hesitated to approach a lost dog in my neighborhood because of this. I've returned a few mutts holding them at my place. I'm pretty confident that I could overpower most dogs. I'm pretty big and fairly strong. A giant breed like a Great Dane would be scary to fight unarmed, though. I'd want a weapon. Preferably a gun, if I had to fight one. As simply as I can put it
1. Dog can't win if you're still standing, so prioritise take down defence. Never kick a dog that attacks you.
2. A dog that runs at you can't headbut you, understand that the dog is going to jump and try to use it's body weight to drag you down, which it can only really do if it can bite your upper body.
3. A dog can drag your leg with more force then you can resist, which is a real problem.

So usually you try to put something between yourself and the dog to upset it's footing, even if it's something stupid like an umbrella, empty bucket, tarp, if the dog doesn't know what it is the dog won't stand on it. Works on horses as well.
Throwing things will agrivate any dog, but if a dog charges you stepping forward and faking a throw is a strong response, dogs can't protect their heads, so fear the rock throwing monkey.
Keep both feet planted, if the dogs running it will jump, but the dog has no arms so if you throw an elbow at it you'll send it flying. And give it nothing to grab.

If a dog bites you that's bad news, but all it can do is pull. And while a dog can pull with significant force that goes both ways.

If a dog bites your arm it can't really pull you back unless it can get it's feet on the ground so you can cross your arms in an X and lift the offending dog off the ground, at which point it's dangling helplessly and will probably let go.

If a dog has bitten your leg, you can grab anything to prevent it pulling you down. Dog can't win if you're standing so it follows that if you grab a street sign, the dog can never win, because it can never drag you down. Worst case, a dog is dragging you down in the open. Well because the dog can only pull, you want to bend your knees to lower your stance without losing your footing, then you punch the dog in its eyes. The dog has no capacity to protect its face at the point it's already bitten you, as soon as you strike at the dogs face it will probably also let you go
