Aight, I'll start off by saying that Gundams are gay mary sue bullshit, and this thread is about the grunt suits - Zakus, GMs, all the gritty normal stuff that's piloted by grizzled adults, with normal hair colours. So, my buddy and I are working on a tabletop wargame setting that's taking place post One Year War, where most law and order has collapsed for the short term, and lots of military units have kind of just gotten stranded and gone mercenary/warlord to survive.I want the /K/ommando opinion on what a small Mercenary force of mobile suits might look like - you and the lads, cruising around the solar system and the colonies, picking fights on behalf of the Zeon rump state or the sketchy Earth glowies, fighting pirates, warlords, rogue colonies, and sometimes deliberately fucking with the major powers on behalf of their rivals.Build your squad and your lore, gentlemen.
>drop dumbdam>pick up battletechproblem solved
>>65000505Mechs are maintenance hogs with all those articulated limbs and G-forces acting on them. You first need a big logistics ship with maintenance facilities to haul those mechs around
high mobility type is cash money, EZI'd get three war buddies in a Papua class with engies and ground crew, as we picked off targets that weren't too crazy defendedYou gotta manage your contracts so you don't bite off too much or get fucked by the employer, but we'd zip around the battlefield and commit plenty of warcrimes on the fedrat scum
>>65000518Fpbp
>>65000549I figure that yeah, you'd either be a force that came attached with a ship (that you then stole when the government couldn't pay you anymore), or were a planet-bound force that got abandoned and started getting supplied by whatever passed for a local government authority.Unlikely that you'd be making bank as a tiny squad though, so you'd likely be on the brink of poverty every mission, with most of your suits accumulating hack-job repairs and slowly becoming frankenmechs.Either way, there's certainly a bit of rule of cool to it - mechs are inherently retarded, but damn if they aren't sexy.
>>65000595Jotunheim with a mixed force of 2 late war Zakus (MS-06FZ Kai or MS-06F2 F2 Type) and a standard RGM-79 GM, all with 90mm MGs, bazookas/Sturm Fausts and maybe a beam spray gun for really difficult targets. Not great but extremely easy on the logistics, powerful enough to take on most engagements, and fast enough to escape the rest. You can pass as a civilian transport with some extra paint since the Jotunheims were originally a civvie design, but they've got plenty of room for supplies and maintenance rigs. Oh, and bring some Sodons or shit for personnel transport, maybe a squad of Marines for boarding actions. This is assuming you're in space and not going Earthside.
>>65000686>SodonsAnd Gonorrahs for backup
I assume you already watched 08th MS Team if you're into the more grounded aspects of MSGBut like the first anon said Battletech is what you want, the setting is tailor made for merc storiesMenace is also a decent game with a setting like what you want, exception being you're a peacekeeper instead of a merc but same difference really
>>65000505A crapton of out of date machines. Gms, Zakus, Goufs, guntanks, etc.
>>65000505More vehicles and infantry. The only reason 08ms feel grounded is because the sonar is placed on shitbox and infantry related imagery in the opening.Im sure gihren's greed or super robot wars has all the mechanism and stats so you will just need to modify into warlord economy to get it going.>Build your squad4 gm [g] in the forest. One has rocket launcher.Special mission has beam sniper.3 gm or gm d + gm command in space, special mission gives gm sniper/sniper 2.3 gm f desert type + gm fd armored in desertBut the fun is to be forced to make do with looted garbage suits, limited market sales and occasionally got purpose build suits and service team for special missions(night stalker, gun cannon/gun tank, even air transports) by borrowing or sub contracts or attachment from the client/promisee.
>>65000505>>>/toy/Go back you underage retard
>>65000518this but unironically.>>65000648Battletech is 10 bucks on steam right now, even if you don't like the world or the designs it'll give you a much better appreciation for what a mercenary unit would have to operate like and what their costs/payouts are likely to be. solid little turn-based game too, fairly okay representation of the tabletop.
>>65001655>Has never seen Gundam
>>65000505This isn't to discourage you anon, but you are in fact describing battletech circa the late 2nd succession war through 4th, to a T.
>>65000549Lots of those left over in the wake of the war, entire oceans of spare parts too. Being a junk or salvage shop owner would be a generational wealth generator after 0079
>>65001706Anon..... Only old fucks have seen Gundam. The new generation of zoom zooms cant handle Gundam or Mecha.
>>65000518Really the best answer. Even has rules for exactly what OP has in mind.
As long as I can drop a space colony on Australia I'm happy
>>65001844Arguably, that's even more damning. There's a new gundam every 3-ish years. 00 had enough beam spam to make even Gen Alpha take notice.
>>6500203800 came out like 4 years before Gen A even started being born.
>>65000518Gundam is pretty Battle Techy until the RX-78 enters the picture, early OYW being directly analogous to the Age of War with the Terran Hegemony standing in for the Earth Federation.
>>65002710if the periphery created mechs first i guess
>>65002288Yes, they'll have to suffice with Witch from Mercury.
>>65002710>>65002839Mobile suits are interesting from a BT standpoint. Just about all of them are jump mechs optimized for space combat and emphasis melee in ways even Inner Sphere mercenaries would find excessive. The RX-78 was accurate enough for a teenager to make called shots in melee without any training while Battletech melee is little more than flailing limbs. MechWarrior even omitted the concept entirely until a MW5 patch. Heat Hawks came standard on Zaku's and were quickly replaced by beam sabers while Battletech didn't see standard melee weapons until after the 4th Succession War. You also see Shields introduced early with the Zaku II having a shoulder shield. The Inner Sphere wouldn't see shields until post Jihad. Likewise, there's a degree of modularity with externally mounted weapons that's closer to Omnipods in terms of speed and ease of use. As a trade-off, Gundam armor is far thinner. While Luna Titanium alloy can take a lot of punishment, most beam weapons can easily remove limbs or punch through torsos with single hits.
Depends on the context of the mission and whatever special particle bullshit exists that magically prevents guided weapons and/or satellite reconnoitering.>frontline guy x2>scouts x3>artillery x40,000>probably a guy with a sword >a cool helicopter or space jet or something to cruise from planet to planet inWe just do base destroy missions from the opposite side of the planetSword guy does Duels and Colosseum fights because he's otherwise entirely useless. Like a mascot or something. We make him pretend to be Japanese, too.
>>65000505>Build your squad and your lore, gentlemen.Might as well have fun with it. The Twins-2 Zakus with Magellan Top cannons. -Not actually related but they're always together-Comprise the majority of the team's long range firepower.-About as well adjusted as anybody but their co-dependency makes everyone think their gay.One-Armed Dom-Rides a Dom...with one arm-Watched WAY too much Kurosawa films while in POW camps. -Thinks he's Zatoichi reborn-Insists on dressing as a Ronin-Actually pretty good with the heat rod.-Marksmanship so bad he might as well be blind. Job Job-GM Pilot-Entirely too normal and well adjusted-Everyone thinks he's some kind of clone, Including Job Job!-GM basically stock. Sometimes swaps the beam spray gun for an MG due to E-Cap shortages-Team frontlinerEL GATOooooo GRANDEeeeee-Masked wrestler. Somehow-Pilots a Gouf with no guns, no heat sword, just WAY too many GM shields and a heat rod. -Frontliner, actually pretty good at that.-No, he never takes off the mask.Doc-Team mechanic-Pilots a Guntank Recovery vehicle. -Not so good at combat, is that good at repair.Boss-Pilots some tricked out GM with a gundam head-Nobody knows where he got the gundam head.-Or the gundam mask-Takes the job way too seriously-Actually pretty good at tactics.
>>65000505Existing Warlord use Toyotas for a reason. You need a setting where mecha/mechs are common and used for agricultural/everyday purposes (like in battletech) than i can buy that your small rogue force can adapt them to combat and service them and keep them operational, since parts are common as should be mechanical know how.
>>65001950Can we drop one on the middle east too?
>>65005118He did mention it's post OYW. There's basically mobile suit wreckage Everywhere. >>65005159If we did, would anybody notice?
>>65000505They would look as exactly as showned, Zakus with mixed parts and colors due to parts being replaced.
>>65006046Yeah, there was a lot of dead zakus scattered about. As long as the reactor didn't melt down there's a good chance you can salvage something. However, you'd also see a lot of more advanced mobile suits. Mostly Doms and GMs. Also Magellan tanks and that weird mobile firing line, the Cui.
>>65006191…Fucking spacenoids
>>65006196That's what happens when you let people that have never been outside the walls of their space colony design the hardware for your planetary invasion. Hence the massive number of amphibious mobile suits, for all those underwater cities and bases the Freddie's might have.
>>65006374Earth is 2/3rds covered in water. What do you mean they don't have underwater cities?
>>65006191I swear this stupid thing makes sense when you consider the Zeekes probably use shit like this to control rioters inside colonies. Why not nave a mobile riot barrier with a gun that can engage targets upspin of the colony wall? I wouldn't want to be the dumb ass that gets killed from a guy 2 towns over at my 9 o'clock high
>>65009289The weird part of the Cui was that it was Actually Useful. Those goofy wings had a firing step so you could have something like a platoon of infantry laying down suppressive fire while setting up jetpack raids. Still a stupid idea but one that occasionally worked.
>>65009854apparently also for boarding ops. being a space frogman has to be fucking crazy
>>65004373>most beam weapons can easily remove limbs or punch through torsos with single hits. These are magic nuke guns in Gundam though, BT has no equivalent
>>65006196Your soul is just too weighed down by gravity to understand its genius!
>>65000505Gundumb got really stupid when they started fighting on Earth, they really missed the "bogged down in mud" angle.
>>65010437>magicYou fucking bet, nearly everything about Gundam is fucking magic, and even the fucking magic can't stay consistent for 3 seconds.>m particles make missiles worthless!>oh missiles work now! >beam weapons destroy EVERYTHING >lol here's some magic armor coatingIn addition Gundam's messaging is as schizophrenic as Evangelion's, no Japan you can't have your cake and eat it too.
>>65010660Newtypes are just a form of advanced autism.
>>65010678So Clanners. Got it.
>>65004373The thing to keep in mind is Ablative Armor only became widespread in Gundam around Zeta, so barring a few periods like the OYW where Luna Titanium was a game-changer before getting superseded by its end, most Mobile Suits are effectively fighting naked, hence you see them hanging onto legacy calibers like 100mm autocannons that an assault mech of equivalent size wouldn't even register as a threat.
>>65010724More advanced. Newtype tism is so advanced you actually get superpowers. https://youtu.be/rnN-4gguGWI?si=3bcEaWMWGCZ9MG6U>>65010642> "bogged down in mud" angle08th MS team. That's basically 08th MS team. >>65010753Mind, most Mobile Suits hover around 60 tons despite being taller than an Atlas. The O was 86 tons fully loaded and was considered gigantic.
>>65010924it's crazy how Unicorn made nameless mooks so fucking cool
>>65010925Say what you will about the plot, Unicorn looked Good.
>>65010929yeah everything up until BanaJesus Links stopped the Death Star with the Power of Heart was pretty decent military SF
>>65010724Nah, Phantom Mech is just straight up Battletech Newtype equivalent. Just trade evolution and understanding for experiencing death in a mech cockpit
>>65010932But Muh Funnels!
>>65010932>Battletech Newtypebattlefield myth and propagandathe Newtype programme is just a cover-up for secret military neuralink hardware that enables pilots to control drones, coupled with racist anti-Spacenoid positive racism. the so-called "Axis Effect" was actually a product of shellshock-induced mass hallucination, sensor glitches and computer virus attacks
>>65010753>Ablative armorBy the time it became widespread, mobile suits were already slinging around weapons that in BT would be considered warship-grade "roll how many battlemechs survive by escaping the blast zone" checks and was mostly there to tell anyone still hanging onto kinetic weapons you must be this tall to ride. Offense completely outpaced defense past the RX-78 Gundam itself.
>>65010957Needs a pic of a Mega Particle Cannon in action.
>>65010940>PicI was expecting a tin foil hat.
>>65010632Please don't drop any more space colonies. Space colonies do not grow on trees.
>>65010957In gundam they're battleship grade too, or at least we're considered to be in early UC, seeing as before the creation of the E-CAP you needed a battleship sized reactor to fuse mega particles on a timescale that would be useful in a battle.
>>65005118Those actually do exist in Gundam, but like everything that isn't some kind of super robot those boomers mandate you put into the show for toy sales, they're out there in the background else they take the spotlight off the pearly white space samurai.
>>65011124Not bad for Dropship scale ships.
>>65011451I was talking about the beam rifles the mobile suits carry. Prior to the feddirs making them particle cannons were only seen on ships and base defenses. That's why early suits like the zakus all had machine guns and similar weapons.
>>65000505Mechs are stupidly impractical. Mercenaries are going to look like colonial troops in African Bush wars - high mobility, underfunded, undermanned, but still pound for pound better than the insurgents they face. A healthy mix of burned out veterans and flunkies too stupid to make it anywhere but the ass end of the galaxy.
>>65011897>galaxyOP specified UC79ish Gundam, which is restricted to the earth sphere.
>>65012003I’d like to earth Sayla’s spheres, if you know what I mean.
>>65012099Same, but Cecilia and ChuChu from Witch From Mercury.
>>65012003You're right, I didn't read the entire post. My bad.
>>65011652Fair, the RX-78 trailed behind the Mk1 Mackie in terms of raw power production. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that the first gen Battlemech was a 100 ton assault mech.
>>65012154Her hair spheres or her chest spheres? I hear both are delightfully soft with just the right amount of firmness.
>>65000505This shit will not last 10 minutes in todays battle fields drones, javelins, rpgs, mines, arty etc. They are just metal grunts that would face the same fate as ziggers and hohols now.Even more vulnerable due to size, movement limitations, fov, reaction speed
>>65013707Actually, the Zaku would do pretty well considering how much spaced armor it has. Seriously, just look at the mass to size ratio. Damn thing must be mostly hollow.
>>65013727No. If tanks can get btfoed to oblivion this shit has no chance.Russia tried with the meme turtle tank. They don t try it anymore.Drones are too small too fast to many and have enough payload to penetrate tank armor. It can survive 1 2 3 4 hits. Drones are plenty and cheap
>>65013744You also tend to need half a dozen drones to kill a turtle tank and Zakus have much better jamming and mobility.
>>65013895>Jamming fiber optic drones.Too big to bulkyEvery drone operator wants you on their hit list Ggm
