With the J-20's designer getting axed recently, I'd like to think the J-36/J-50 designers will take their time and NOT lie about the project status just to save face, but something tells me that wont be the case...

I should have been more specific.

Why?
>>
>>65003028
Something something corruption that brings great shame to the CCP or something idk exactly. No idea if he actually did get axed but his name has been removed from the program.
>>
>>65003028
Most people seem to think it was because he lied about J-20 capabilities, or status in development/timeline to enter service or stole a bunch of money from the J-20 contract money,

Or a mix of all of the above.

Rumors persist about stealth coating not being testing in all conditions of flight before getting approved for production, and some issues regarding the IWB doors not being able to seal again after being opened at supersonic speeds.
>>
>>65003035
So it's not because the plane is fucked or anything? Just corruption?
>>
>>65003049
Shiet man, you should've asked the Turks, they developed the coating for the F-35.
Also RIP to the doors, do they deform at super sonic speeds or is it a force issue? If it's the latter you guys need pressure outlets on the aft side of the bay because you're ramming so much air into the bays that it overpowers the hydraulics at super sonic speeds.
>>
>>65003028
reportedly a J-20 exploded in testing and Xi saw it and ordered an investigation. also that they were lying to him about it's performance and how far along it was in development.
>>
>>65003061
>Shiet man, you should've asked the Turks, they developed the coating for the F-35.
what
>>
>>65003053
We have no idea. All anyone ever gets busted for in China is corruption. Could be he scuffed the wrong guy’s shoes, could be he robbed the program blind while not delivering promised specs. Nobody here will ever know for sure.
>>
>>65003071
:^)
>>65003068
Why the fuck would they lie to Xi of all people? He's an engineer not a lawyer, if they tell him something's fucked he'll make sure it gets unfucked.
>>65003075
Probably. But wasn't the J-20 a stopgap anyways?
>>
>>65003028
They were testing their "anti-stealth" radars against the J-20 for development purposes. There was an investigation after they didn't work in Venezuela or Iran, and it turns out the J-20 isn't actually stealth. The radar designers got gulaged as well.
>>
>>65003087
>Why the fuck would they lie to Xi of all people?
I don't know, face saving? chinks are weird like that, they can never admit that they're wrong or failed at something.

>>
>>65003087
They’ve built 3-400 that we know of and have expanded production floor space to a degree that would support over 100 airframes a year recently, so no it’s pretty much their mainline and will continue to be for quite a while. They’ve also recently shown off new variants suggesting they don’t intend on stopping work on them any time soon.
>>
>>65003094
Well RIP. But who would've thought that using both fucking CANARDS AND fucking VERTICAL STABILIZERS in the SAME fucking PLANE would make a plane visible as fuck.
Also the angles of the trailing edge of the canards seem to fuck with the leading edge of the wings in terms of reflectivity, they should check those again.
Reduced visibility doesn't mean invisible to radar.
>The radar designers got gulaged as well

China operates S-300 and S-400, so clearly they could have (and almost certainly did) test against them. The problem is that the J-20's stealth is probably optimized against these systems, which means they're at least somewhat stealthy in the X and S bands. However, they probably didn't bother to consider its radar return across the entire spectrum, which is why they're easy to detect on VHF-band radar like the JY-27A.

So the J-20 designers claimed they made a plane as stealthy as an F-22 because it was effectively invisible to S-300 and S-400, and then the JY-27 designers claimed they could track an F-22 from absurdly long ranges because they could track a J-20 that they were told was as stealthy as an F-22.

That is unironically closer to the truth than any western sources reported at the time.

It's from a sci-fi series that an MIC aviation company sponsored to generate interest in the aerospace industry.
That worked, the series was very big in China and interest was generated.

At some show, the aerospace company exhibited a mockup of the air/space fighter from the series. Chinese recognised it as fictional, it would be like if Northrop Grumman exhibited picrel at their stand in an arms show and then Chinese media talked about how US was trying to claim they had a robotech fighter.

This, it suggests they just do not have the thrust needed if they need 3 engines since that reduces range, increases thermal heat and costs more in maintenance per engine. it's a crutch not a flex. There's a reason the F-35 does fine with one bigboy engine in it, because that singular engine produces more thrust than a mig 29's two engines and about the same as a super hornet's two. They can claim whatever specs they want on paper but in practice it appears all but a crutch.

As for this J-50 thing in general it along with the J-36 in retrospect clearly need to exist if the J-20 is an utter disaster much worse than any anti-hype about the F-35 ever was and internally they know it and need something that actually is at least 5th gen or better.

All you've got is that he's been unpersoned but modern China has a track record of putting bad people in administrative detention for years until they've learnt their lesson, even if it's only to serve as an example to others.
They rarely outright murder people, the only time I can recall it happening in modern times is the CIA spies that were rolled up in that network communication blunder a decade or two ago.
And there was plenty of evidence that those people died because that was the point.
Judicial executions aren't that fast (mandatory supreme court review FYI) and aren't concealed.

If China hasn't announced an execution, there's no reason to believe that they did and you've presented no reason to believe that they did.
The fact that you're insisting on proof of life shows that you can't find any evidence of it either.

>Noone could actually forget america pushing the Russians into the arms of the Chinese, right?
And after four years of self-destruction in Ukraine, nobody fears Russian assistance to China either.
The Russia situation is being handled and currently being done by European money and Ukrainian blood, the USA is free of that obligation and free to focus on China.

>Nobody could actually look at Iran and even entertain the idea that in week 4 of defending Taiwan the US could drop jdams on Chang's ferrys.
That's exactly the idea that I hold after watching the US drop jdams with impunity on a military operating Chinese air defences.
>>
>>65010668
>They rarely outright murder people
What are you talking about?

They just get disappeared never to be seen again. Makes you guess if they're actually dead or just in a prison camp somewhere, the ambiguity is the point.

You're basically trying to argue if you didn't get to see a public execution then he's probably "just" living in a prison labor camp for the next decade+.
>>

>>
>>65010679
>They just get disappeared never to be seen again
No they don't.
They do get seen again, eventually.
That's the point.

Executions and murder (for political crimes) are quite rare and when it's for corruption, they make a public spectacle out of it for obvious reasons.
You're saying he's dead out of some political vibe you like but you've zero proof and your constant insistence that "it must have happened" is just an admission that you have zero proof.

The real question is why the Chinks claimed that the engine was some king of "go fast" engine rather than a testbed of a some kind of high efficiency engine for low and slow stealth operation like the entire airframe would suggest. That at least would make sense and have a real application.

I take issue with the "obviously" because poor engine performance is also a plausible explanation.
Your explanation is pretty plausible too though so I'm not saying you're wrong.

>Or is the B-2 also a piece of crap since it uses 2 engines
I've never paid much attention to the B-2 beyond watching Broken Arrow, so imagine my surprise when I see it has four engines, not two!
Clearly you haven't paid much attention to it either.
This isn't actually disproving your point above however since apparently it's using multiples of smaller engines.

The reason I looked up the specs is because of the highlighted lines.
Isn't the reason the B-2 has multiple engines because it is intended to carry 18 tonnes of ordinance/fuel to high altitude?

An aside, and I'm not at all sure of the answer, do two smaller engines have less or more fuel efficiency and/or thrust than one large engine of equal weight?
If you took a B-52 and replaced its dual engines at each pylon with one bigger one of equal fuel intake/weight, what would the result be?
If you could build arbitrarily large engines and replaced every engine in the B-52 with one fuck-huge one at the tail, what would the result be?
I really don't know because I'm not a plane autist but I know there are some in the thread so please educate me on this.

Each of the B-2's engines makes about 80 kN of thrust. A SINGLE GE90 engine in the 777 airliners makes about 500 kN of thrust, and it entered service 5 years after the B-2. Making thrust from a single engine isn't a problem, the size is.

The B-52 could easily be powered by 4 or maybe even 2 high-bypass turbofans (the engines you see on airliners) but was designed for 8 engines in the 50s. I can't remember off the top of my head, but there are non-aeronautic reasons as to why they haven't replaced the engines yet.

There are too many factors affecting engine performance to judge a design by size alone, but that doesn't make a nice headline

>American really can't figure shit without British help, they're still flying 75 year old B-57s in NASA
If it ain't broke...
I think the reason they're still using them is because they're good enough and do the job and there's a whole bunch in the boneyard that can be pulled out when required.

Why spend $30m on a new airframe to do some high altitude scientific stuff when you have airframes that can be pulled out and returned to service for $1m?

They've never had a carrier so they've never needed a navalised airframe before.
Maybe they're wondering how folding wings work and how it affects stealth?
For whatever value of stealth the J-35 has in the first place but whatever, they need to know how the hinge will affect that and how to even build hinged wings that don't fuck up the aeronautics.

The question of hinges and stealth remains something you'd want to test though and you'd probably need to test hinged wings on every airframe anyway.
