I haven't been autistically corrected about "uhhh ackchully it's SUPPRESSOR" online in a loooong time. It happened to me in real life once in the last 5 years. In the immortal words of Jarvis Cocker, "something changed".

Wtf happened? Seems like this used to be a major culture war issue, 10 years ago people would get very worked up about it. Saying "silencer" makes you a gun-grabbing libtard who doesn't believe in the constitution. It was even more taboo than clip, or the dreaded shoulder thing that goes up. A surefire way to get yourself canceled.

Did everyone just grow up or was there a movie or something that made it cringe to care about this?
>>
If I put my hand over your mouth when you yell it's still technically audible but you're also still silenced.
>>

People can now be countered by pointing out the Maxim silencer patent. Pedantry is an ouroboros of stupidity.
>>
laughing at poor trigger discipline turned into laughing at 'le reddit finger'
shit changes all the time
>>
>>65004146
Yeah but that was what they did back in the day and it didn't dissuade the autists, they usually countered with something about how back in the day gun grabbers weren't a thing so you could be more poetic with words but now you have to be very careful because the hollywoods are listening

In fact if you posted an image of an old patent you'd be the one accused of being a pedant or an autist and "you don't live in the real world"
>>
>>65004168
Ah but the internet wasn’t half so widespread. Now it’s everywhere and everyone who’s interested has had time to learn this fact. The pedants can now be outnumbered.

>I haven't been autistically corrected about "uhhh ackchully it's SUPPRESSOR" online in a loooong time. It happened to me in real life once in the last 5 years. In the immortal words of Jarvis Cocker, "something changed".
Because we all just call them suppressors in general nowadays, and that's become the most common normal terminology. Including literally Congress, look at stuff like press releases on the Hearing Protection Act:
>Today, Congressman Ben Cline (R-VA) reintroduced the Hearing Protection Act (HPA). This legislation reduces the overly burdensome barriers required to purchase a firearm suppressor to ease access for law-abiding citizens simply trying to obtain the hearing protection they need.
>firearm SUPPRESSOR
It's mostly gone away because the correct side won. It'll still come up though when some progressive goes "we have to keep SILENCER bans because otherwise someone could be assassinated in a busy street and nobody would even know!!" which I have heard in the last 4 months when there was some debate locally about the HPA.

I used to work in a shop making the things, we called them silencers, or cans.
ATF in 27 CFR Part 479, calls them "Mufflers or Silencers"
>Muffler or silencer.
Any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for the use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.

Personally, I'm well past the point of giving a fuck.
>>
>>65004277
Everyone knows that, it dates back to the original 1934 law and Maxim's marketing bullshit. It was always a loaded term though, first used for advertising in the snakeoil era and then for grabbers to justify depriving regular Americans of their rights and restricting it only to the rich. There's no reason anyone else has to follow the ATF though.
>>
>>65004201
I mean it did happen to a CEO, that's a pretty big argument their backers will hammer on. If some clown can walk up and shoot him in the street and get away for days what's stopping it from happening go them?
>>
>>65004461
Nothing. And that’s based.
>>
>>65004111
I think everyone just started automatically assuming that you're forever retarded if you call a suppressor a silencer and its not worth the effort correcting anymore.
At least its not as bad as the people who keep calling magazines "clips"
>>
>>65004461
>I mean it did happen to a CEO,
Which one? The only assassination of a CEO I remember in recent history was that health care one back in 2024. But the suppressor did nothing. Timeline was:
>6:44 a.m. Thompson walks along the sidewalk toward the New York Hilton Midtown hotel and the assailant shoots him multiple times, racking his pistol after it appeared to jam; the suspect immediately flees northbound via a pedestrian walkway.
>6:46 a.m. Police respond to a 911 call reporting that a person has been shot.
>6:48 a.m. Officers arrive on scene and find Thompson with multiple gunshot wounds to his back and leg; he is taken to the hospital. Assailant is seen riding an electric bicycle north into Central Park.
Like, there was a call basically instantly and for a rich person the cops were on the scene in 2 minutes flat. The suppressor usage had zero to do with the suspect getting away for a few days, the electric bike probably was more of a factor lol. What caught him was the camera network and the guy being a retard. He went to all the trouble to 3d print a shitty gun and suppressor and falsify ID, and then after his assassination he didn't throw them in a swamp but just kept them in his bag he carried around as a momento or something?
>>

>I think everyone just started automatically assuming that you're forever retarded if you call a suppressor a silencer and its not worth the effort correcting anymore.
If you're someone who clearly knows guns and cans and call it a "silencer" it's pretty obvious you're just being a contrarian faggot and actively want somebody to have an argument with you, and yeah there clearly is no point in arguing with that. Whatever, life is too short. If it's some normie who is friend or family or something then depending on the context I think a lot of us would still mention "just fyi they're typically referred to suppressors these days which is more accurate", as much from the point of view of giving them another term to google for if they are curious as anything. Language changes over time and everyone has encountered it so I've never encountered anyone surprised about that.

>>65004111
>Wtf happened?
The gun control debate was at its peak during the Obama administration. Back then the anti-gunners were at their most blatant and some pro-gunners felt like changing some terminology to sound more PC and make them worry less
>"No it's not a silencer because it doesn't fully silence the gun, it only partially silences it; its a suppressor."
Even though it doesn't fully suppress either, it only partially suppresses.
>"No, the military doesn't use assault rifles, they use infantry rifles."
Despite the fact that assault rifles have been regulated since 1986 and the new assault weapons bans had nothing to do with assault rifles. Hell, some states tried to ban handguns as assault weapons.

>>65004146
>People can now be countered by pointing out the Maxim silencer patent.
If you did that, they'd go on their sophistry about how "word meanings change over time and suppressor is more correct anyway." See the contrarian retards that don't deserve a (you)...

If you've met any manufacturers, you'd know they still call them silencers.

Incorrect by definition.
But still correct in the same way that someone could call you a dumb piece of shit and still be correct. Technically wrong, though. Silenced means to be made silent. What you described is "muffled" not "silenced". Feel free to read a book, sometime.

>over a century ago

I can't think of a more autistic thing for "regular" people to get worked up over. Whether I call them surpressors or silencers you still know exactly what I'm talking about so stop being a pedantic faggot and no, it isn't at all like the clip/magazine confusion since those words do not refer to the same thing so it was always appropriate, though still annoying, to correct someone using them interchangeably. I also have no idea what you're talking about when you say 10 years ago that calling them "silencers" aligned you with gungrabbers. That's again something dreamed up by obsessed guntard autists who are probably industry shills paranoid about their bottom lines. Normal people do not see a difference, normal people do not hear "silencer" and somehow think the device is more sinister over a "suppressor". You are simply so far up your own ass that you've become out of touch with reality.
>>
>>65004745
>and manufacturers,
yeah, silencerco sure makes a lot of suppressors. dumbass

the rest of your list are all people trying to put a spin on it. Henry Maxim named them silencers when he invented them, and that's the end of the discussion.
>"but technically - "
ackshually, they're gun mufflers, but mysteriously nobody calls them that. "Suppressor" sounds cool, which is the entire reason it was picked up by CoD larpers like yourself.
>>
>65004884
No need to double down on being illiterate. The fact that the term "silencer" appears multiple times on the document and you couldn't see it proves your retardation.
>>
>>65004982

It was at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan, there are almost certainly always police present, especially for a major conference.

Nah, since I am literate, I was able to find the word "silencer" in your own source 3 times. Keep coping.

The original Maxim patent says silencer while in reality they do not silence, they only suppress. If you want to be a pedantic dick about paperwork then say silencer, If you want to be a pedantic dick about reality, then say supressor. However, OP, you are most likey brown with no (none-0) suppressors while I am white with many nice supressors.

or maybe you dont care, and if people get mad they get mad. the more familiar you are with a subject, the less misidentification phase you because you have the context to look right through them. "um ackshully" shit in all forms is sophomoric in nature, people grow out of it.
