What makes a good sci-fi gun design for you?

Oh and post your favorite sci-fi guns. Even if they're basically magic.
>>
Doesn't have a bunch of random shit attached to it for no reason

Speaking of random shit. I'm not a fan of designers adding a bunch of random lines in guns, or in anything for that matter. Someone on
reddit
redesigned some Forerunner weapons from Halo 4. Cleaning them up and making them look less busy. Among other tweaks.
>>
>>65007151
>What makes a good sci-fi gun design for you?

Ergonomics that arent shit

Most well liked sci fi weapons are based off a real weapon and so they have ergonomics built in. As soon as you have made up shit nobody has hold or manipulate you lose sight of that and your designs turn completely retarded.

looks like generic shartstation excrement. both before and after. it even got the gay bar lights lmao. anyone who thinks the right looks better have no sense of style and just repeat what they are told to feel about things. Forerunner weapons don't look like that.

We will never get CE levels of peak again.

More imaginative than being part of the scifi gun bingo which consists of:
>Bullpup
>7.62x51
>Caseless
>Modern day shit but chrome
>Random techno lights
>Firearms technology somehow being less advanced than the 1950s
>>65007387
Bungie Halo is both the worst offender for above yet also manages to still be imaginative when it comes to some weapons.

What's wrong with a bullpup in sci-fi context?
>>
>>65007387
Don't get me wrong, CE guns are iconic, but if a game came out with the CE plasma weapon designs today, we'd all be clowning on them for how goofy they look. The UNSC shotgun is sick though.

>Even if they're basically magic.
I mean, that's what most sci-fi weapons are. Slap some technobabble and there you go. I understand some people like their fantasy material more grounded than others, but when someone gets so nitpicky about the physics and engineering of the technology, it makes me wonder why they even engage with the genre to begin with.
>>
>>65007520
There will always be complaints but I agree, they'd be more audible today than ever. I can't articulate myself good, but when it comes to sci-fi weapon designs, there's a "middle ground" approach I like where the weapons are stylized in a way where they're not too "generic" from our current real life guns, to "generic" overdesigned sci-fi weapons with random details and glowy bits here and there. And Halo hits that sweet spot for me. There's other games that do it well too but they're hard to come by. I'm putting quotation marks on generic since it's a horrible subjective term that also seem to rotate with people as time moves on. One unique design can become generic to the next generation.
>>
>>65007493
Nothing. Everything. The main issue is that they make something a bullpup and call it a day essentially, that's how they turn a gun scifi usually with zero reason or explanation why it needs to be a bullpup.
>>
>>65007585
That's fair.

I like it because it constantly broke the game. Not just the meta balance, but actually broke shit in the engine when they changed things that had nothing to do with it.
>>
Something that while interesting to look at it and it's background/stats are nice is also fairly practical and makes sense to actually use like the S38 from star citizen. A 10mm pistol that is fairly cool conventional in design but replaces some buttons with slides and has a weird sight setup

Heres an excerpt from Hirohiko Araki’s book on manga. Thats a great start for the basics. On top of this though…
-Justify the purpose of any identifiable component. Have some idea of what every button or piece of metal DOES that makes sense.
-keep weight in mind. Try setting a goal weight and then keeping it in mind when choosing materials and the sizes of parts. Bethesda will put massive barrels and mahogany-desk stocks on guns, and while it might function, it looks obviously overweight compared to anything real.
-for future settings (that dont include an apocalypse or similar tech setback), seriously consider why and how your gun is BETTER than what we have now. The future army would not adopt a 2-shot sniper rifle that cant kill with a headshot, or a laser shotgun you cane to hand crank for a minute before firing. This is because the MODERN army also would not have use for these things. For video games this is mostly a lore thing, but for fully directed settings, almost all tech should be better (or at least much cheaper) in the future.
-it is almost never a good idea to have parts of a gun light up. Why would that be useful beyond tiny dim LEDs or something. Giant gamer RGB lightbars are really silly, cut it out.
>>
>>65009572
>laser shotgun you crank for a minute
Nerd talk, a laser "shotgun" that equals the performance of 00 buckshot out of a 12ga shotgun with only a minute of hand cranking would fundamentally transform warfare.
>>
>>65009583
How?
>>
>>65007841
It's ultra cringe how GW nerfs the Necrons just to give humanity another cheap W. They have recoilless wrist weapons that can one shot Emperor Class Titans ffs. Plus, the average Necron soldier was fighting Krorks bigger than the Beast and Eldar at their peak without Slanesh breathing down their necks.
>>
>>65009631
A necron typed this post.
>>
>>65009601
NTA but charitably only the very efficient laser system bit. The hand cranking bit would make the combination a non-starter and the anon is on crack for even starting to defend it.

If you thought your big number version of 40k was ever, ever, ever going to be the dominant vision actually put foreword by GW you're a colossal retard. All the big numbers in Warhammer have to hide in obscurity, the second it comes time to get an animation you're going to get your Star Wars and you're going to like it as always.

Space marines WILL be lumbering giants
Bolter shells WILL be stopped by sandbags
Baneblades WILL miss stationary targets at 100 yards
Imperial ships WILL fight within ten ship lengths of each other
Titan weapons WILL do the damage of 155mm Artillery guns.

You literally know this is true. The second any animation or public facing aspect of the franchise is announced you KNOW what you're going to see.

The necrons currently are dealing with basically 65 million years of missing updates as they boot up, the majority of their forces is commanded by the Tombworld's AI until the overlord is awoken

They have such a knowledge of psysichs(in their universe) thst their weapons are basicaly magic.
They basicaly shoot hieroglyphs telling your molecules/neurons in this case to die.
So idk how it spreads i could wager it senses the energy of bounded molecules and it starts eating them apart, after it loses its charge it stops.
In Infinite and the divine they use it to dig inside a planet crust.
>>65009631
True, the Staff of light used by Lords can melt a tank on its own.

These were so sexy. Too bad the warmind cells died for the new warmind ce- I mean tangles.
>>
>>65007841
>>65009942
The new animations gave them the weird ash effect when they hit for some reason.

Gauss flayers in earlier fluff had their namesake effect as the beam would literally "flay" whatever it hit one molecule layer at a time

And the sniper weapon here >>65013602 is a different technology that fries the target's neural pathways without otherwise affecting the target
>>
>>65007172

>>
>>65013937
I think there's a running joke that whenever a character actually uses one they hilariously miss for whatever reason.

Although there was one successfully used to kill some titans in the Twice dead king book
>>
>>65013776
i always thought warmind cells were a test for stasis
and they just didn't delete them until they deleted the armor mods
>>
>>65015174
I'm fuzzy on the timeline since it's been a while for me, but I think you're right. But warmind cells were pretty much killed since tangles replaced them for that role, giving them an opportunity to sunset another set of cool weapons.

i like it when they give you options, like in Helldivers 2

the recoilless rifle can be set to HE or HEAT mode, does it make sense the same round can do both? no, but its fun

and the VG-70 variable, this gun is just wacky

>7 barrel, 49 round assault rifle, based on the metal storm
>can be set to 3 different fire rates: 300 rpm, 550 rpm or 750rpm
>can be set to 3 different fire modes
>auto, works like a normal assault rifle
>volley, fires 7 bullets at once, one from each barrel
>total, fires every single bullet in the weapon at once, this breaks your arm and ragdolls your character backwards

>the recoilless rifle can be set to HE or HEAT mode, does it make sense the same round can do both? no, but its fun
My argument would be that the cavity of the warhead, instead of being empty space is filled with a relatively low density but extremely stable explosive. In HE mode a specialized booster fuze causes the entirety of the warhead to detonate, while in HEAT mode only the shaped charge element explodes, with the loss in penetration being negligible due to the 'cavity' material being low density.
