Over a century ago ladies used to wear big fancy hats secured with special pins. Hat-pins were basically big steel needles, anywhere from several inches to a foot long, with a big decorative head. Women did use these as weapons, and there was even considerable moral panic about it back in the day. There were even laws governing the length of hat-pins, the same way they tried to restrict knives that were too long.
