Nah its fine. Standalone makes the rifle easier to carry, but now you've got to find a place to have a massive pistol thing on your gear, so its still a compromise. Whats really changed is how launchers are viewed, where historically your grenadier gets a grenade launcher on his rifle and your squad lead maybe gets one too for signalling (varies from country to country), now they're increasingly recognized as something with utility to be passed around. Grenadiers still obviously get one, but its not weird for others to carry one as needed or for vehicles or firing positions to have one left in them. As a result, it doesn't make sense for them to be glued to a rifle, so the vogue has changed.
>>65015984>why'd they do it?There were earlier prototypes from various countries but the reason the US actually went forward with the M203 was because the standalone M79 launcher was too big and heavy for grunts in 'nam to carry one along with a rifle. The standalone M320 is light/small enough that a soldier can plausibly carry both separately. Whether or not it's a good idea is outside my wheelhouse.

Then we decided the M203 sucked because it limited the type of grenades you could shoot and it also is a big heavy chunk of metal hanging off the barrel and fucking the handling of the gun. the new 320s have better grenades but are even worse than the 203s in terms of fucking up the rifle so they are carried alone

But the M203 can't load long rounds (because the chamber opens directly to the front, and you have to maneuver the grenade around the fire control group to get it in there), so we went to the M320, which has a chamber and barrel that pivots. But the M320 is too heavy, so we're back to using it like the M79.What we really need is something as light as the M203 but with a chamber/barrel that pivots like the M320's.
