After a year long absence, the journey of the Busta Move(s) and her intrepid crew continues! Previous installments: https://desuarchive.org/k/search/subject/Target%20for%20Today/

Target for Today is a solitaire tabletop game (translated to digital for these threads) covering the USAAF's bombing campaigns in Europe throughout the Second World War. With options for choosing everything from which Air Force, Bombardment Wing and Squadron you fly with all the way to which submodel of aircraft you'll be flying, the game is rife with detail. Over a year ago we began the journey of the Busta Move, a B-24 of the 15th Air Force (49th Bomb Wing, 451st Bomb Group, 725th Squadron). While perilous, our crew has done far better than the ill-fated men of the B-17s that shared the Big Nigger titles, with our current permanent losses consisting of:

>Waist gunners Fanculo, Danielson and Sam Hyde, with another (Lefty Navel) being medically discharged
Our bombing results, however, have been much less impressive: out of eleven combat missions the Busta Move has been forced to abort due to combat damage six times, and on a mission to soften up Anzio for Allied landings we missed the target entirely. Our 10th mission, Milan, was another abort but the flight back was a nightmare. By the time the Busta Move returned to base, she had lost two engines, both main landing gear, all of the twin .50 cals had been rendered inoperable, the entire oxygen system had failed, one wing was barely attached, half the crew was wounded and dozens of other minor hits had been taken. That plane was retired and the Busta Move II was put into action, already having completed one mission.

For now, strap your parachutes on, grab a K-ration and lets go bomb vaguely near strategic targets!

Eleven missions had come and gone, and now it was time for mission number twelve. The crew of the Busta Move II spent the chilly early morning prepping for the mission ahead of them, accompanied by the newest crewman to join their roster as a waist gunner, Roland. The target for today was, surprisingly enough, not a trainyard. Now to be fair, it was a rail bridge, so the difference in the end was minor, but the fact command managed to show even that small bit of restraint was to be commended. Less ideally it was located in the Italian town of Faenza, and even worse command had assigned us barely any escort fighters. Regardless, duty was duty and we prepared for the flight. Joining the squadron to replace the loss of Pepe Apu was the new bomber [Empty], a suitably nihilistic moniker.

Our takeoff proceeded without incident and the squadron formed up overhead our base. We'd pulled a fairly average spot in the formation in the high cell, so while we weren't afforded any additional protection, at the very least we weren't stuck in the low cell. Accompanied in the high cell by Flak Fodder, Abbot War, Pizza, Vini Vidi Vichy and Early Life, we turned out to the Adriatic and began our flight.

Our flight over the Adriatic was, by all accounts, quite mundane. Our formation proceeded largely unmolested, the German fighters making few appearances along the way and soon we were turning inbound over the Italian coastline. Once, while over the sea a singular fighter darted through the middle cell, landing a glancing hit on the bomber 'Lead Weight' before diving away, but things seemed quiet.

Of course, upon reaching the target the quiet gave way. A trio of German Focke-Wulfs came barreling in on us, two from ahead and one to our side. Our few escorts, to their credit, did their best and managed to ward off one of the head-on Germans as he came at us. The other two pressed their attacks, and our gunners responded.

In the nose, Yossarrian fired off a burst from the nose gun, the tracers leaping across the sky towards the German. The burst was remarkable well aimed, and a pair of shots tore into the German's wing. In the top turret, Snuffy fired as well, his shots going well wide of the intended target. In the waist, both Roland and Saddam fired at the German on our starboard side. Eager to prove his worth, Roland scored a hit into the oil cooler of the German, leaving it with a stream of inky black trailing the fighter. Saddamn attempted to make the shot as well, but found no purchase.

While both German fighters are damaged, both press home their attacks.

The German diving from ahead of us does not waste his fire, letting off a short but well aimed burst aimed directly at the flight deck of the Busta Move II. One round glances off the aluminum skin of the bomber, but a pair meet right at the convergence zone, impacting the exact same spot in a vital part of the hydraulic system. Oily red fluid is spattered about the cockpit, as the pressure in the system is lost entirely.

The German ace on our starboard side lets off a burst of gunfire, sprayed rather haphazardly across the length of our bomber. One shell strikes the starboard elevator, blasting it apart, while another passes more or less harmlessly through the nose section. In the top turret, Snuffy curses as the head-on fighter slashes past us before he spots the starboard Focke-Wulf opening fire. He wheels the turret around to face the fighter, but the final hit from the ace finds it's mark first.

Manning his radio, Se Eye Aye huddles down as gunfire rattles the bomber. Punctuating the clatter of shells striking metal is a singular meaty thwack, followed by a heavy thud upon the floor of the flight deck.

The murderous ace breaks off his attack, diving away trailing oily black smoke. The other Fw190, feeling audacious, pulls into a tight turn and attempts to follow up his attack from behind. Gene in the tail and our ball gunner Saddam both open fire as the Kraut tries to close the distance, and the chasing Focke-Wulf is an easy target. Round after round strikes the fighter, as the pilot tries to keep himself on target. While Gene manages a good set of hits, Saddam finishes the job as the rugged German fighter finally gives out, smoke and flames pouring as it falls to the Italian countryside far below.

As the German fighters fall away, the bomb run begins in a confused manner. Flak rises up to meet our formation, although it's loose and inaccurate. Despite that, the loss of hydraulic pressure and inability to open the bomb bay doors fucks any possibility of us making an accurate drop. In fact, we're in a kind of shitty position – we technically COULD release the bombs, letting them rip through the bomb bay doors on the way down, but the drop would almost certainly be off regardless. Worse still, there's a decent chance that the mangled remains of the doors would act as an airbrake, doubling our return time (and all out of formation). Of course, under normal conditions we could utilize the manual winch to open the doors, but that requires time. And time isn't something we have.

In the end, as the formation comes over the target, every other bomber releases it's payload. Our group turns back over the target, with the Busta Move II still carrying a full load of bombs within. The air defense manages to tighten up it's fire, a shell exploding off the port wing. The shrapnel manages nothing more than puncturing holes in the surface, and our formation leaves the flak umbrella. Se Eye Aye moves to Snuffy's spot in the top turret, gingerly taking up the blood-spattered controls.

Leaving the flak corridor of course means the German interceptors reappear, as another pair of Fock-Wulfs come in to take passing shots at us. Our gunners open fire on the incoming fighters, but none of their fire makes contact. Se Eye Aye fires the top turret, the unfamiliar controls and wind rushing through the bullet hole punched neatly in the glass ahead of him.

Both Germans make their attack, but only a single round manages to impact Busta Move II. An explosive shell strikes home on the flight deck again, and detonates on impact. The explosion blasts a wave of shrapnel through the aft section of the flight deck, and Se Eye Aye catches several shards, falling to the floor with a cry of “This can't be happening!”.

The Focke-Wulf that hit comes around for a second attack, again pulling up from behind, but despite only taking a glancing hit from Saddam's ball turret he misses his target as well before breaking off. Leaving Roland to man both waist turrets, Boris Johnson makes his way up to the flight deck, squeezing his way past the bombs still suspended within the midsection. Helping Se Eye Aye up from the floor of the flight deck awash with mixed hydraulic fluid and blood, he moves the wounded radioman aside to take up the top turret himself.

And yet despite the suffering we face over the target, the return trip to base is entirely uneventful. Not a single Kraut or Italian makes an appearance. Instead we're only left with the groans from Se Eye Aye and the rather disconcerting rattle of the bombs still hanging in the bomb bay. As we approach home, we attempt a manual door opening, to avoid having to land with a payload of bombs on board.

With our bomb bay doors well and truly jammed shut, the crew resolves themselves to a difficult task: landing a bomb-laden aircraft with no brakes. Sure, the crew could have chosen to bail, but that would certainly have been seen as a critical lack of faith in our pilots.

But despite the potential danger, our worries proved unwarranted. Trump and Monke brought the B-24 in just above it's stall speed, setting the gear down right at the end of the runway. Flaring the control surfaces in an attempt to provide aerodynamic braking, the bomber rolled down most of the runway before slowly coming to a halt. Gingerly taxiing off the runway, our bomber was met by an ambulance, from which a pair of large orderlies hauled Se Eye Aye out of the aircraft.

Overall, a pretty lackluster mission, but we'll still be getting credit for it. Se Eye Aye even gets a rapid release from the hospital, so he'll be black in action again for the next mission.

Luck had a sense of irony, it would seem. Our 13th mission came, and it was to be mercifully short – a quick hop over to Rome to bomb an Axis airfield. Not only that, we could expect a half-decent fighter escort as well. And to put the cherry on top, we'd been assigned a wonderful spot in the formation: number four, nestled deep inside the middle cell. Things seemed just too good to be true.

A pair of 109s and a 110 single us out as their target, although one of the single-engine fighters is set upon by a pair of escort fighters and breaks away. The 110, coming at us from a low angle, is spotted by Saddam in the ball turret. The seasoned gunner opens fire, and the lumbering interceptor catches a hail of .50 cal rounds and goes down burning – Saddam's seventh kill.

From directly ahead, the 109 jinks the burst fired from Yossarian's nose gun, but takes a glancing hit from the top turret manned by Sven. Despite this, the German manages to loose a burst of gunfire at us, with four shells bursting across the skin of Busta Move to little effect. The German swings around for a second attack from the side, but Sven's gunnery is accurate and deadly, striking the Kraut a second time and shooting him down.

The second wave of German interceptors is a trio of Bf-110s. Our escorts remain helpful, bouncing one away from us leaving only two left to attack us. We exchange equally inaccurate gunfire with the one ahead of us, with no hits scored on either side. Behind and beneath us, another 110 pulls up on our tail. Saddam wheels his turret around, takes aim and fires, only for the guns to seize up and jam. Gene helps pick up the slack, landing a hit on the trailing twin-engine fighter. His aim spoiled, the German misses us as well and dives away.

Beneath us, the low cell of bombers is getting an equal amount of attention. Lufthansa 181 takes a long burst of enemy fire, cannon fire pummeling the bomber but she remains in formation. Meanwhile 'BRAAPPP' is ablaze with muzzle flashes, as her gunners pour lead at the encroaching fighters. One German goes down in flames, while another limps away from the formation smoking.

Rome looms ahead, but the enemy fighters peter out as we approach the outskirts of the city. In fact, it's not until we're on the bomb run that the flak gunners begin firing. A well-aimed shot bursts under our port wing and peppers it with shrapnel, but none of it strikes anything vital. Despite the bursts of flak blossoming around us, Yossarian is easily able to spot the Axis airfield far below and aims well, with nearly half the bombs bursting around the aim point. A good run!

Turning back, we encounter little flak on our exit, but the enemy interceptors return.

Yossarian might be good at aiming bombs but he's not the best gunner, and misses the lead Focke-Wulf. That fighter scores a pair of hits, one splintering a flight deck window, the next striking the starboard wing root. Sven and Biden take the fighter at our 0130 under fire, but both also miss. The Shrike lets loose a long burst which strikes home, but apart from blasting the starboard aileron apart the shells inflict little damage. Meanwhile on our starboard side, Roland opens fire on the flanking fighter, but after only a few rounds his gun jams. That fighter himself fails to find purchase though, missing our bomber as well before breaking away.

The two Germans that hit us come around for another pass. From 0130 low, the fighter avoids Biden's fire but also misses us. The other Kraut attempts to pull up behind us, taking heavy fire from Gene in the tail as he does. With a badly damaged plane, the offensive fire fails to find purchase and he limps away.

And then, disaster strikes.

Reaching the post-bombing rally point, our formation turned for home. But behind us, the crews of 'Flak Magnet' and 'Cunning Linguist' tragically violate one of the key rules of aviation:

Alas, Linguist ziggs where she should have zagged, and her right wing plunges into the fuselage of Flak Magnet. For a few brief moments the bombers hold together in a crude haphazard imitation of a German Zwilling, before the stressors on Liguist's wing overload the main spar. Tumbling into one another, the two bombers plunge to the Italian countryside far below. Staring downward, our crew watches the two wrecked aircraft, spying a trio of parachutes appear before twin fireballs explode upon the ground.

Our withdrawal from Axis-controlled Italy proceeds, and our box suffers no further attacks. Above us in the high cell, Putin on the Ritz takes a damaging series of hits but manages to stay in formation seemingly okay. Somewhat beleaguered from our short mission, our formation arrives at base, our landing proceeding smoothly.

Smooth cannot describe all of our formation's landings, though. Putin manages to bring herself down safely, but halfway through the landing rollout of Lufthansa 181 the right landing gear collapses. The bomber swerves off the runway, and upon careening into the dirt buries it's nose in the ground, coming to a halt with the port engines still turning. Emergency vehicles swarm the wreck, pulling men from the stricken bomber. In the end, the bombardier and radio operator perish, with the rest of the crew suffering serious injuries apart from the captain and waist gunners.

The loss of three bombers in a jaunt to Rome is sobering, and our squadron stands down for some short term reorganization. However, we do get one surprising piece of good news, as both pilots of the Flak Magnet not only managed to bail out of their bomber, but make it back to Allied lines! Perhaps appropriately, the sole survivor of the Cunning Linguist was their radio operator, although he shortly appears as a reported POW in Axis hands.

At this point I'm mostly curious if the Busta Moves' time in theatre accurately reflects a standard bomber crew's experience. We're getting shot to shit and forced to turn back for some reason like 60-70% of the time we get in the air, it's baffling.

Well, OP went ahead and rolled a random target off the list as opposed to the weighted tables of the base game, and today we're attacking....Hajdúböszörmény, a town on the ass end of Hungary. What's are we bombing here that's apparently worth sending us to zone 9? Well according to Hungarian wikipedia:

That's less than a great amount of information, but happily I was able to find a historical overview of Hungarian airbases in WWII with some details on the events surrounding it. Hopefully we can do better than our historical counterparts!

Probably not, unless it’s focused on tactical bombers, since the Nips didn’t really put up concentrated fighter and flak defense like Italy and Germany did. IIRC, there was less than a hundred big bombers shot down by Japan.

Our first round of combat begins, with our crew putting out a decent showing of effort. Saddam in the ball turret manages to severely damage one of the 190s ahead of us, while Roland scores some hits on the 3'oclock fighter. Most of the Germans miss us, with the exception of the 3'oclock Focke-Wulf, who scores a series of hits along the length of the Busta Move II. Most of the hits cause no lasting damage, just shredded duralumin, but one shell bursts along the waist and peppers our left waist gunner Boris Johnson with shrapnel.

The 3'oclock fighter, despite the damage, makes the daring attempt to pull up on our tail, attacking again from six low. Agonizingly, both Saddamn and Gene manage to flub their shots, and the German lines up his shot.

The first two rounds do very little to our bomber, no meaningful damage sustained. But the third...

Alright /k/, I know it's become a common theme but I'm genuinely sorry for the large silences. My weekend went from being a cozy time off to a total shitshow in a very short period, so this thread might become a bit more of a slow-paced affair.

Regardless, the dice have placed ourselves in the shoes of a B-24 in service with the 830th Bombardment Squadron.

Strictly speaking, I believe this squadron only operated the later B-24J models, which replace a single-mount guns in the nose section with a twin-mount turret. From my readings different aircraft managed the manning of this turret differently than others, so we have a few options:

>bombardier/navigator swap each mission
>bombardier mans while enroute, navigator when in target zone

Also, there's not a ton of consesnus on the new bomber's name apart from a couple votes. I'm happy to select one of those, but any additional votes?

We strike out over the Mediterrainan, turning North to make our way to the coastal town that serves as our target. Inside, each man keeps his eyes peeled, searching for the Germans that are sure to be incoming any moment. Below us, the weather goes from poor to worse, as a heavy overcast layer blankets the sea, stretching seemingly to the horizon. As disconcerting as flying for an extended period of time with no sight of the ground can be, it does sere very well to keep the advance of our squadron concealed from the Germans as well.

In fact, as the Yora confirms that his radio navigation equipment tells him that we're approaching the target, things are just as indistinguishable here as from the rest of the clouds, apart from the occasional flak burst that's blindly scattered in the vauge direction our formation is approaching from:

Of course, that cover goes both ways, and we've got barely any way to accurately bomb the target from our vantage point. With no visual landmarks to go off of, simple dead reckoning is all we can go off of, and a load of Uncle Sam's finest high explosives are dropped into clouds beneath us. It should not be considered that surprising that our strike misses the dockyards (the town, and perhaps even Italy) entirely.

Our turnaround over the (vauge area of the) target goes off without a hitch, the flak and fighters still making no impact on our formation whatsoever. Leaving the target zone and back into Zone 4, however, the clouds finally disperse.

A trio of Bf-109s swoop in, two coming from ahead and one to our side. Thankfully, our substantial fighter escort dives on the interceptors coming from ahead, leaving us only a single fighter left to deal with. Lan Casterman in the top turret, Oscar in the waist and Howard's ball turret all open fire, but only Howard lands hits. Despite the damage and with his plane belching smoke, the intrepid German lets off a burst of fire at our bomber.
In the ball, Howard flinches as a cannon shell barrels directly towards him, slamming into the turret. A moment later he realizes he hasn't been hit, but the turret no longer responds to his controls, jammed fast. A second hit strikes the fuel tank above the bomb bay, but after a moment of spraying fuel the self-sealing liner kicks in and the tank is intact – a narrowly missed disaster. The final round slices into the nose, striking our bombardier Jeffstein and sending him falling to the ground with an agonized scream.

The remainder of the flight goes off uninterrupted, although a lone German is spotted at a distance as we near our home base. Landing goes smoothly, with medics and mechanics making their way aboard to tend to our wounded man and bird. Jeffstein is hauled away by an ambulance, while a ground crew gets the ball turret open after a bit of grinding metal and foul language.

This was a fairly quiet mission and one without any glory to bring back. Unfortunately, the squadron chaplain will bring news shortly after our debriefing that Jeffstein's injuries were more severe than expected, and that he's returned to the island of the Lord.

The next day a queer looking Chinaman arrives, introducing himself as our replacement bombardier. Welcome to the crew 2Lt. Lee Ho Fook! At our briefing we're informed that, while we won't get to be nestled in the middle cell, we'll still get to be lead bomber for the high cell. Wonderful, that's a strictly worse billeting. On the other hand, fighter escorts will be good and so is the weather as we leave base.

Our crew prepares for battle, but that proves largely unnecessary. Our cell is ignored by the first wave entirely, while the second has all of it's fighters intercepted by our escorts. In fact it's only the squadron lead for this mission, Biggus Dickus, who gets any action, as one of her gunners damages a German fighter that slipped through the fighter screen.

Escorts only removed one Focke-Wulf, leaving us with two others and an ace Messyshit barreling down on us from straight ahead. Gunfire tokens distributed, including the attempted passing shot from the tail on the 109 if Mr. Fook misses his shot. But for right now, I must to bed.

The remaining three fighters close in on us, and our gunners respond in the classic American fashion. Saul T Bowles, our starboard waist gunner, manages to trace a series of shots across the rookie German's fighter coming in our 3'oclock, spoiling any chance he had of making a hit on us. Above, the twin fifties of Lan Castermans top turret spit lead at the 190 coming from above and ahead of us, scoring a glacing hit on the fighter. In the nose, Lee Ho Fook squints to make out the Bf-109 coming from ahead, letting loose with an inaccurate burst of fire that goes well wide.

As expected, the right side 190 misses us. But the two fighters making head on attacks have much better aim, and both manage to score a series of hits.

A hail of incoming gunfire slams into the Guy Foryu. In the nose, Lee dives for cover as a shell from the 109 punches through the plexiglass, while another rounds from the 109 pings off the right wing. Looking around the compartment, the casualty becomes apparent, the Norden bombsight is wrecked.

Meanwhile, the Focke-Wulf opens up from his elevated position, focusing his fire on our bomber's midsection.

Dixon and Dylan flinch as a shell pops just above their heads against the skin of the bomber, but no shrapnel strikes anything important. Behind them, a cacophony of impacts comes from the bomb bay. There's no tremendous explosion, no eruption of flames, just a slight hissing.
