I guess there's that anecdote in one soldiers war where one of their guys gets snatched in the night and later found strangled using his own intestines. Thats pretty memorable.

Both the Chechen and Russian officers in charge knew each other from their USSR days, they even had the same radios and tried to convince one another it wasn't worth the effort fighting
The Russians then suffered about 90% casualties going into Grozny and the Russian CO died later on pulling out. Out of the 4 brigades going into the city, 1 got lost, 1 was late, 1 was lost and late and the last one said it was fucking stupid idea and stayed out of the city.

I liked reading Robert Young Pelton's stories about the second war as he was one of the few Western journalists to get into Grozny during the siege:
https://youtu.be/aNLvbm7wqlE

He wrote a long travel-style article about it, it's in his book The Hunter, The Hammer, and Heaven. Russia was bombing everything to shit, and to get in you had to connect to the Chechens in Turkey and then go to Tbilisi and wait a week until traveling by convoy across the border at night because the Russians bombed cars on the road during the day. You couldn't go through Russia because the Russians blocked journalists from traveling there, and trying to get by them through an unofficial hired fixer was more likely than not to get you kidnapped and murdered by the mafia (who were also probably glowies). Think that's how some journalists disappeared in Syria btw, they got set up by Assad's guys using Russian practices.

He chilled with Chechen fighters in a basement in Grozny and they had a Russian prisoner in there who was just chilling. The Chechens would sit around watching Chuck Norris movies while passing time during bombardments.

Also one of the guys who accompanied him on the ride was Aukai Collins, an American mujahid / CIA agent with a missing leg (he died a few years ago). Also there was some young American guy, an autist in his early twenties, who went there to die (I think he perished in a doomed battle against Russian tanks) and spent a lot of time on the trip annoying a fourth member of the party, a female journalist, by sperging out about the Byzantine Empire. Fun read.

Too many to count based on one soldiers war. Still, it haunts me that an entire village was castrated because no one was willing to disclose the Chechen perpetrator. If I can recall, Russian soldiers were ambushed, killed, then nailed onto a wall in the shape of a cross for others to find. Other Russian soldiers interrogate the entire village where it happened and nobody talks; Balls were removed from all males in the village.

Another neat story is when Chechens used car tires to cross a river at night. The Chechens were hoping to knock out a tank parked inside of a partially collapsed theater as well as inflict massive casualties to those inside. The missions was a failure and the Chechens were forced to float back across to the other side.

I found the link to the second story. Its the image attached

If you guys want books then read My war gone by. I miss it so.
It's not solely about Chechnya, the first part is in Sarajevo during the siege but the real shit goes down in Grozny where the author goes completely whacko after one too many artillery barrages
