I remember the OP pic being in a kids magazine I had like 25 years ago. It was an article about "soldiers of future". I guess it didn't go as planned lol.

Only controversy there is about is as any other of this kind of weapon is fact of such to perform well is to wait out for technological advancement to reach a point where it can support this at reasonable price with reasonable reliability.
>>
>>65021405
They should've just given up and let them shoulder the damn grenade launcher like a rocket launcher.

>US makes a joke weapon system
>China copies it and puts it into production
Lol, lmao even, China
>>

The OICW was shit, but that was more down to its ambition exceeding its grasp technologically speaking, rather than the idea being bad. That massive ass scope is pre-smartphone, so a modern attempt shouldn't be significantly larger than an Acog; plus you can see in the very last iterations of the rifle before cancellation that they ditched the big square body for a more "shrink wrapped" receiver; and it looked significantly handier. It will never be revisited since combination weapons are a dead concept, but it could be decent if tried again.

I think in some ways its ok to let the leash off the research tards for a little while and let them dream up some space magic.
Provided of course you can get them to focus on usability and potential doctrinal improvements they're not likely to do any real harm and keep the budget at somewhat sensible levels. It does give you a bit of a pulse on what the MIC is probably going to churn out sooner or later to try and get some gov-bucks and that can mean a more educated buyer ideally who knows what's alright, complete crackpipe hitting and not-right-now gear

Ideally... well that's the theory anyway

That is not China.

As is K11 from South Korea and whatever is designated one from North Korea.

>It was an article about "soldiers of future".
It was on Popular Mechanics? They are probably the best people to predict what will not happen.

makes Halo's Battle and Assault rifle look normal

You know it's surprisingly not too far off from what the modern infantryman has save for the mask and fox-hole diggers
>>
>>65022654
Has Alien Colonial Marines and WH40K vibe.
>>
>>65022716
Bring back the 'sci-fi M14', and 'instant foxhole charges'. If we're not going to get jetpack infantry and personal helicopters it really is the least that they can do.

It was shit because everyone figured out instead of making a big heavy bulky rifle with a lot of shit built in that can't be removed they could just bolt the shit they do want onto existing rifles. When you can turn an M4 into an OICW essentially then the OICW doesn't have a reason to exist.

I like the atomic army vibes. Truly the golden age where honest men were preparing to fight with nuclear armed EVERYTHING. A battlefield constantly flickering to blinding blasts and radioactivity, as Edward Teller (pbuh) intended.

Shit looked expensive to operate anyway

>Lighter than M2 browning
>More accurate and less recoil
>Able to swap between explosive mini-cannon rounds or regular .50
>Sustained rate of fire equal or exceeding M2 browning
>But because it doesn't dakka fast enough because Americans are literally fucking Orkz, they shitcanned the project
Lol, lmao
>>
>>65023608
The sports model you posted there doesn't look resilient enough for military use.

>>65024349
>Any large unit is just going to be nuked the moment the enemy figures out where it is
>Refocus the army entirely around units so small that they don't warrant the use of their own bomb
>But that dramatically reduces the firepower available to any unit
>Ah, don't worry, they're just going to be calling down an Honest John with a tactical nuclear warhead on anything they can't deal with using the small arms they carry
There's a certain level of retarded genius to it, it's a real shame that they tested it in Vietnam, without the nuclear element, i.e. under conditions almost perfectly designed to make it look useless.
