This guy was before my time, but I remember when Bill Cooper died, and the conspiracy/anti-government types were mourning him as if they'd just lost Kurt Cobain or something.

>After serving a three-to-seven-year sentence in prison for assaulting police, resisting arrest, and fleeing from police in a car chase
The backstory on this is pretty insane.
He was parked outside of a bank that got robbed, saw cop cars coming and assumed it was about him so he fled the scene, cops assume he's the robber, high speed chase ensues, he resists arrests, goes on the lamb, ends up being the target of a nation-wide manhunt, the highlight of which was him him calling into his radio program (broadcasts via shortwave to patriot anti-government schizos across America) from payphones to give updates.
Ended up doing years in prison for nothing.
In hindsight, that entire patriot shortwave subsculture (which existed from the late 80s into the mid 2000s) is pretty interesting, and was very "underground."
It could definitely benefit from some kind of documentary or some scholarly treatment.

Actually, double checking, the fugitive saga was after an earlier assault charge, after which he got a slap on the wrist, and then after the bank mishap, he got the book thrown at him.
