You may not have noticed it, but all USN ships were withdrawn from their Gulf bases before the war precisely because of the risk of losing them.An additional pucker factor is that basically all USN ships, unless they are brand new, are deployed with degraded or redlined subsystems, which you can read about in USNI post incident reports. One ship may have a half broken radar, another ship an IFF transponder that may or may not work etc etc. They also lack the weapon systems to defend themselves against massed amounts of light weapons. Well, they can defend, but spamming SM-2s, ESSMs and RAM missiles vs a never ending stream of C-700s and propeller drones is a losing venture. One phalanx firing .59 cal bullets is not enough.
