How much damage can a Blackhawk withstand? I thought they were pretty tough (for a heli)
All helicopters are very very vulnerable to small arms fire and MANPADs. Truth be told if you can take out an MQ9 or even a Shahed, you have more than enough capability to take out a black hawk.
>>65040837Are helicopters (like MBT) already phased out then?
>>65040851No, because they do things you cannot do without them, and these things are still important even if the risk to crew and vehicle is higher than some people expect. We lost 2500 Hueys to enemy fire in Vietnam. They were still necessary.
>>65040851Helicopters were probably the deadliest place you could be in vietnam statistically. The key is not picking a fight with enemies who actually have air defenses
>>65040851Like with heavy bombers high crew death(44%) were basicaly useless with the low accuracy and germany just kept buildig more since the production skyrockets during the bombing and only curbs when invasion of mainland Europe happens. They should be but commanders like their toys so they wont be phased out

>>65040851Yes, Russia lost multiple million dollar airframes to 1k walmart drones, it's more over for helicopters than to tanks, these can at least dig in and hide, install APS.
>>65041505the only helicopters that get droned are stationary ones.
>>65041514They hit a KA-52 on the move, the most advanced russia attack helicopter worth millions destroyed by a 500 homemade drone, it's grim for helicopters I'm afraid.
>>65041505And you couldn't install APS on a helo because why?
>>65041527Weight and aerodynamics, at least for the current helicopters and APS we have, maybe some new tech will be developed.
>>65041523you know what else can take out helicopters? basically every manpad
>>65041531The next gen of rotorcraft will have integrated 200kw lasers for defense and soft skinned targets. 100kw pod mounted units have already been tested.
>>65040831>file name/timestampoh, it's you
>>65041552MANPADs are very expensive and limited in distribution compared to a 100 dollar drone built on a garage, you can have drones lying in ambush all over the AO and catch helicopters on the way to and from their shooting positions like those russian helicopters that were shot down, it's a very concerning state of affairs for helicopters, I reckon.
>>65041568I suppose those newfangled anti-drone drones and missiles will play their part as well. A helicopter is neither much faster nor much more durable than a drone if you hit it in the right spot.
>>65040831Looked into this pretty heavily after that 160th SOAR Nightstalker pilot got the Medal of Honor for Venezuela.I learned that these helicopters, both Blackhawks and Chinooks are pretty modular. Around the cockpit and vital components, they're pretty substantially armored by default, and they can also install modular armor packages of some classified composite material.Standard issue is probably just plating. Regardless, in flight they can take direct hits from a DShK (12.7x108mm) loaded with AP ammo and be fine.Which raised the question of how that pilot got hit in the legs several times, and still has both legs.Unsure of this, but guessing the armor rating is for inflight/at altitude. Seeing as he was right above the ground, and they said the craft was taking machine gun fire, I'd wager he was hit with either the small steel or depleted uranium penetrators after shedding the copper jackets, and fired from a DsHK nearby. It'd loose enough velocity to not blow the guys legs off. Again speculation though.Point is, these helicopters are way tougher than you'd think. Aluminum airframe doesn't scream "durability" to me, but they make up for it in other areas. Just don't get hit by a Somali or Taliban with an RPG.
>>65041552Machinegun
>>65040864Vietnam was a loss for a reason
>>65041708yeah, and it wasn't related to how many helicopters were shot down.
>>65041484You know what actually I take it back, I overreacted It's the stressful time
>>65041878Okay Thanks, I appreciate.
>>65041878lmao the mutt is getting the grumbly tummy from losing his f15, wait scratch that now also an f16lol
