Just bought this little bastard for 140$ but i dont know how i should sharpen my straight razors with it. Should i have the wheel turning towards the edge or towards the spine? Should i just try to do modified x strokes?

get a butterknife or some other random cheap knife and practice. experiment so you know why you fucked up.
>>
>>65042621
I have a cheap zertone which i dont think will hold an edge but i just ordered a gold dollar so hopefully the steel with be hard enough to build a good edge
>>
>>65042606
From the spine towards the edge so you can create burr. Be careful tho, electric wheels remove material way too fast so you can easily fuck up something as delicate at straight razors. >>65042621 Also this
>>
>>65042606
Straight razors get sharpened on a flat surface, you fucked up. Put thin tape over the rear of the razor's spine and side it over a truly flat sharpening stone so that it lays completely flat. You're going to need to get a variety of high grit whetstones. Grinding wheels are better for regular knives.
>>
>>65044008
That's not true unless you are a clueless end user

Hollow grinding requires a spinning wheel, you're just too much of a dependent sheep to get it
>>
>>65042621
Butter knives don't have a thick enough spine, no one here can grow a beard and it shows
>>
>>65044023
Are you retarded? The point isnt to shave with a butterknife. Its to practice on something cheap and familierize himself with the grinder.
>>
>>65044092
Yes I understand the point you think you were making and it was dumb. Razors are a completely different style of blade than anything you're used to. It's like telling someone to practice sharpening their usuba by taking an axe to a grindstone. Complete waste of time. An actual razor with the correct profile but in bad condition can be picked up for less than $10 on the internet, that's how you practice if you don't want to damage your $500 iwasaki
>>
>>65044023
To practice on the whetstone you fucking retard, learn to read.

Saar, the bot is glitching again!

Use a leather strop like a normal person ya mong.

>electric wheels remove material way too fast
I don't think you know what you're looking at. OP didn't post a normal bench grinder, that is a slow speed sharpening machine with a water bath for the wheel.

>>65044164
butter knives are made of totally different steel and have totally different heat treatment compared to a straight razor, the feel on the grindstone is totally different. If anon wants to practice he should do so on cheapo but actual razors.
>>
Can't you get a bag of straight razors from Alibaba for like 5 bucks or something?
>>
>>65044387
It is still faster in removing material than stone of corresponding grit
>>
>>65044387
Bro you are sperging out over the wrong shit. If somebody was given a hack saw and a random 2x4 and told to practice cutting straight youd be bitching that its not the ebony hardwood that he actually wants to work on. Doesnt matter its close enough. Dude just needs to practice. A butterknife is something he should have laying around and is less than a dollar. You want him to go order a 10 dollar razor that he has to go look for. It doesnt have to be a butterknife your so caught up on that. He can go to goodwill and get a bunch of knifes for cheap it doesnt matter what it is. It matters that he practices and leans what he can and cant do.
>>
>>65044444
So now you're trying save face by moving the goalposts from "too fast" to "faster than a stone"?
>>
>>65044467
>youd be bitching that its not the ebony hardwood that he actually wants to work on
No, I'd tell his retarded ass that a hacksaw is for cutting metal, and if he wants to cut wood he should get a wood saw. I'd then teach him about the difference between rip and crosscut saws because that's fucking important.

>You want him to go order a 10 dollar razor that he has to go look for.
I think it would make more sense to buy a bunch of shitty old razors off Ebay or Etsy.

>It matters that he practices and leans what he can and cant do.
Yes. But when the difference between good practice and shitty practice is just a few bucks and a couple days waiting, why settle for half-asssed? If the cost of doing it right was high then you'd have a point, but getting some old razors is a nothingburger that's silly to get hung up on.
