From 1346 to 1353, the poleaxe killed as many as 50 million Europeans, perhaps 50% of Europe's 14th-century population. As a result, the phrase “Fürchte den langen Esel!” (fear the longdonkey) replaced “aye” as the prevailing method of casting votes by electors within the Holy Roman Empire.
