I have seen some videos where they apply the knife with the edge facing towards the wheels motion and some with the heel/spine of the knife facing towards the wheels motion. Which is better?

Didnt you just make this thread and get your answers?

towards the blade is better microscopically

Somebody said in my previous thread that i should grind edge first but i see alot of ppl grinding blades spine first on rotating wheels like tormeks and wens. My gut says i should be doing edge first but theres a ton of ppl out there who grind knives spine first.

Both work and you might have to do either depending on the shape of the knife.

UPDATE: op here. My 140$ wen wheel whetstone came today and im very happy. Just fucking around with my cheapAss zertone straight razor i am already getting a sharper edge than i got from hours of my flat whetstones. Its not perfect and the wheel wobbles a tiny bit but doing edge trailing strokes on the 220 grit wet wheel that comes with the wen and the leather strop wheel, i am getting results almost IMMEDIATELY. I ordered a 3000 grit whetstone wheel which will get here in a couple days but so far i am very happy with my poor mans tormeck.

if you wanna fix the wobble, and if its from the wheel, you need to "dress" it
machinists use artificial diamond tips to make their wheels run more accurate
picrel is what the knife sharpening guys use, I think, its much wider and for lower rpm wheels

Thanks man. How much do they cost? Remember i got this whole wen device for 140$ and i already spent another 130$ on this 3000 grit wheel.

Im hoping thr 3000grit wheel doesnt wobble, or i guess ill have to buy the tool you showed me here.

>How much
its like 15-20 bucks on amazon, but it would only work if the wheel is manufactured poorly, or you make the wheel asymmetrical by grinding a certain way
if the shaft wobbles, I don't know how to fix that one
but then again you'll need to dress the wheel eventually, so its a future investment

Update: op here. I have been researching and it seems like on rotating wheel wetstones its safer to go spine first, especially with straight razors, bc if you go edge first with such a thin edge you risk digging your blade into the stome and then needing a full overhaul to repair the chip or dent. Chatgpt confers wrt the wheel and straight razors. Maybe if you had a tormek then edge leading strokes would be feasible on a straight razor. But i dont think its feasible on my wen. Too much play in the whole system to do edge leading strokes i think. The wen is pretty smooth, dont get me wrong, but to do edge leading strokes on a rotating whetstone the wheel would have to be almost motionless.

Good point.
