Hello, /fit/ hereWas watching a movie with my girlfriend(woman) and I don't understand what's going on in this frame. Is that a toy gun? Movie set prop? Is this what guns look like now? Also a little context, they're supposed to be current era elite US army rangers or something.Thanks.
real gun with blank firing attachment.
>>65059758adaptor for firing blanks
>>65059758That is a blank-firing adapter. It's a plug that's attached to the muzzle of the gun that makes the gun function while firing blank ammo for training. Normally blanks don't generate enough pressure to operate the gas system, so that device fixes that. It's bright yellow so it's conspicuous for safety.
>>65059769>that makes the gun function while firing blank ammo for trainingPardon my ignorance but what does this mean exactly? So the gun shoots blanks and this prevents from shooting bullets? Or the other way around?
>>65059783If you shoot a blank through a gas-powered gun, there won't be enough gas pressure in the barrel to cycle the action so it can chamber the next round. The BFA blocks the end of the barrel to increase the pressure inside.
>>65059793Oh okay so no 'live' bullets at all right? It's all blanks? Got it, thanks.
>>65059803If you were to shoot a live bullet with the barrel plugged by a BFA, the barrel would probably explode.
>>65059783It's a normal gun that's meant to shoot normal bullets. But in that particular scene they are doing a training exercise with blanks. Blanks don't generate enough pressure to make the gun work. If you tried to fire a blank without that adapter the gun would make a "bang" sound but it wouldn't eject the empty case and cycle the next cartridge. In other words, it's supposed to be a machine gun but machine guns only work with normal bullets. If you want to shoot blanks out of them you have to install that adapter. Like the other anon said the BFA plugs the end of the barrel which increases the pressure to the point that blanks can cycle the gun. Those soldiers would use the exact same rifle for fighting, they would just remove the BFA and load it with real bullets instead of blanks.
>>65059783Most modern semi-automatic rifles are gas powered. That doesnt mean they run on gasoline from a gas station, rather they direct some of the gas pressure that's propelling the bullet through the barrel to actuate a piston. With the assistance of springs, this allows the weapon to cycle (extract and eject the old round, and chamber a new one) without any additonal human input. Firing a blank is essentially burning gun powder without a bullet. However without a heavy bullet corking in the gas, not enough pressure builds up within the system to operate it effectively. So they add the little plug valve in your image. It let's enough pressure build up the weapon can function, simating shooting live ammo.
>>65059810>Those soldiers would use the exact same rifle for fighting, they would just remove the BFA and load it with real bullets instead of blanks.I see now. I thought the whole gun was specifically made just for blanks. But now it makes sense, you can just swap the ammo quick.>>65059820I see. One more thing, are there any downsides or damage being done to the weapon whatsoever? So if that guy shoots 100 blanks then takes out that nozzle thingy and then swaps it with real ammo, everything works just fine right?
>/k/ actually giving serious answers and actually being helpfulBest thread on the board
>>65059837Blanks tend to use a bit more powder, which means more residue. After 100 blanks, your weapon may be slightly dirtier than if you'd fire live ammo, but the difference is negligible.
>>65059807It won't explode. The BFA will break off and the back pressure can damage the gun.
>>65059837Absolutely. The alternative function created by the bfa isn't different enough to the weapons standard function to create problems. The most they might have to do is a bit more cleaning due to some extra rounds being ran through the weapon.
>>65059758>girlfriend(woman)important clarification for a /fit/ poster
>>65059758Blank fire adapter so that retarded soldiers don't kill each other, by firing guns at one another at point-blank range.
>>65059837>I thought the whole gun was specifically made just for blanksThey do this for movie guns specifically so the gun can still look relatively normal at a quick glance and cycle, the downside there being you can't fire real ammo out of them without the gun basically blowing up in your face since they pretty much carve off everything meant to keep the gun from opening before gas pressure drops to a safe level.
You know how machine guns go BANG BANG BANG? Well, with blanks they just go BANG and then stop. The yellow thing makes them go BANG BANG BANG with blanks.
>>65059758Squat plug. You should know this.
>>65059933>Correct name>Incorrect purposeDumbass
>>65059837>One more thing, are there any downsides or damage being done to the weapon whatsoever? So if that guy shoots 100 blanks then takes out that nozzle thingy and then swaps it with real ammo, everything works just fine right? You have to do a quick cleaning pass on the gun as well. One of the problems with blanks is that small fragments of the neck/mouth of the cartridge can tear off and go down the barrel. Not a huge problem beyond a couple of yards, but still potentially lethal (that's what killed Brandon Lee in The Crow). Nowadays if you're working a movie you need a fragment catcher for your blank guns if the muzzle is going anywhere NEAR another actor. The blank adapter on those rifles blocks the barrel enough for a fragment to potentially get stuck, glued in by powder residue as you keep firing, and then get blown out later, screw up accuracy, or overpressure the gun. As far as normal guns with blanks goes, you can get away with it using some kinds of pistols and hand-operated rifles. They use extremely punchy powder in the pistol blanks that would blow up the gun if you had a bullet on top. As a footnote, .45-caliber blanks were extremely unreliable for a long time. So if you pay close attention in movies from before the mid-80s you'll often see that a character's alleged "1911" will actually be - or suddenly change into - a smaller, slimmer gun in 9mm like the Spanish Star copies. Armorers also frequently give smaller actors downsized guns like the Beretta Cheetah (a 3/4-size pistol that looks like the M92) or the smaller 9mm/.380 Colt pistols to make the actor look bigger in closeup shots. >t. hangs out with a movie armorer occasionally
>>65059758>watching movie with wife>whole time I keep thinking its absurd no one has checked on them or notices this>twist orrcures>oh okayIt was an aight movie. The concept of them being unarmed for the most part is a cool bit.
>>65059837>>65059847>>65060067You could definitely argue it would contribute to gas port erosion faster. Rifling life should be a wash or better since you are not sending a projectile.
>>65060069Similair, but /k/ino.
>>65060066You do know that blank ammunition can still kill if fired at point-blank range, right? Fucking nigger.
>>65059933>>65060125Stop missusing the term>point blankBoth of you. All that means is that you need not adjust for elevation. I take it to mean with a stupid close zero. But you could argue that an AR with a 50 or 300 yard zero is >point blankout to ~325. A blank isn't doing much damage past 10 feet except to ears. And a BFA means the danger is mainly above and below, not down muzzle. Unless it flies off.
>>65060069I’d argue that since it set out to be a bog standard action movie without some dumb higher theme like “the humans were the real monsters all along ooowwwoooooooooo!” it’s better than just alright. It’s like Battleship. Or Battle: Los Angeles.
>>65060125Keep digging, dumbass

>>65060069What movie is this?
>>65059758>15>>65060069I liked it, as did my gf (woman).
>>65060740War Machine. Perfectly set up for War Machine II, btw.
Christ on a cross this should have been in the first posthttps://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Main_Page
>>65059847>slightly dirtierIt gets way, way fucking dirtier. Literally 5-10x the cleaning burden per round, at least with an M4 and BFA, in my experience
>>65060069>twist orrcures>oh okayThey would have got their shit pushed in by Optimus Prime either way
>>65060299Came here for this
>>65062063imo Mods should add this link to the sticky, assuming anyone is around to even update the sticky anymore
>>65059847>slightly dirtier/negligible differenceSaid by a guy who (painfully) obviously never did a field problem in his life
I used to see these in the older Vietnam war movies, back when most of the audience didn't know better, and I thought it's some sort of gatling gun or something. Turned out it's just another one of those blank firing device.
>>65059847>the difference is negligibleNigger the rifle gets absolutely FILTHY in just a couple of rounds. You can magdump live ammo all day and the gun will be cleaner than after putting a single magazine of blanks through it.
>>65060150In Spanish there's a term that literally means "clothes burning range" - a quemarropa. Very descriptive
