I remember, years ago, there was a video posted on 4chan on making smokeless gunpowder from scratch. From memory it showed how to not only make nitrocellulose but also how to stabilize it and make it into a powder you could use. Does anyone have that video, or any books/videos like it?

making nitrocellulose is easy, cellulose just comes from cotton fiber, then you just expose it to citric acid and sulfuric acid, it's not exactly a well kept secret, this shit is literally High School chemistry

samefag here
not citric acid I meant to say nitric acid, d'oh!

You know what I mean, it's easy on paper, in practice you should always take a lot of precautions when working with this shit. The acids should be cooled and slowly mixed in as they create a strong exothermic reaction and toxic fumes that are extremely dangerous to inhale or get on your skin, so wear gloves, a breathing apparatus, do it in a well vented area etc

I was gonna say, if it was as easy as cotton and orange juice we'd have see romans with machine guns back in the day

The Modern Rogue has a tutorial on making Flash Cotton (aka gun cotton or nitrocellulose)

I assume you also would need to add some kind of extra shit to it though to change the burn rate, maybe something inert. I don't know, I'm not a chemist

One of the many reasons why this book ought to be read cover to cover by any gun enthusiast is that it gives a bunch of formulas for early smokeless powder....and goes on to explain just how dangerous making that shit is.

Making nirocellulose is easy. Making a smokeless powder with a consistent burn rate such that it will not blow up your gun is very very difficult.

If you don't have a copy of this on hand and you're interested in guns then I don't know what the fuck you've been doing with your life. Punch yourself in the dick for being stupid and go read it.

It really is, I have run a heap of nitrations and all you need is a thermometer, an ice bath to keep it cool and a bucket of water ready to quench the reaction if you get a thermal runaway.
I have done nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine and ETN. Nitroglycerine is great fun because you learn just how full of shit those old Warner brothers cartoons were, if it's not confined by being adsorbed into paper or cloth it's really hard to detonate by hammering it on a smooth metal surface. It's also great for mixing with any explosive with a negative oxygen balance due to it's positive oxygen balance.
I was a little salty I couldn't find anywhere that was selling diatomaceous earth so I couldn't make Dynamite.

that depends on how clean and how fresh it is. Stuff you just syntheized correctly? not that unsafe. Stuff that's who-knows-how-old that may or may not be contaminated, which is what's far more likely appear in a Loney Tunes cartoon, is a different story.

> anywhere that was selling diatomaceous earth
Lolwhut, it's common as fuck. It's sold in pet stores as dust bath for chinchillas, it's used as swimming pool filter media, etc.

True, I don't mean go fucking around with 100 year old dynamite you find in an old mine.

This was ~20 years ago in Australia, it wasn't easy to find then.
