Why didn't MacArthur take their buildup seriously? If he had just dug in, he probably could have broken the Chinese assault instead of getting pushed back to more or less status quo ante borders. North Korea, if it even existed, would be a tiny rump state akin to Transnistria or something.

Did MacArthur, after fighting the Japanese really go "The fuck Chang gonna do?" and then snatch an unsatisfying draw from the from the jaws of total victory? Since that's what it seems like.

Because the Korean war, like most wars, was scripted by central bankers and he was told by "The Four Kings" to job like the heel in a WWE match.

yes, that's literally what he did.

Ridgeway was pretty based, but the only reason he got to be based was because MacArthur made a blunder that seems surreal. If you're planning to attack the Chinese, maybe you should dig in while your political leadership debates the merits of this so you aren't caught by surprise by a Chinese offensive.

Is it weird to think both the US and China achieved their strategic goals in the war, but in a suboptimal way?

US: Contained NK aggression, but lost the chance to deal with them once and for all.
China: Prevented bordering a US ally, but similarly did not decisively resolve the Korean question, and the opportunity cost may have thwarted their Taiwan ambitions.

Is that a fair call?

Wars having win-lose conditions like a videogame is an old paradigm from back when war was fought for prestige by European aristocrats and needs to be abolished in my opinion. Modern warfare has extremely broad scope and multiple different goals and criteria for success and it's insane to think that a war can only be a win condition for any particular side if every single one of these goals are met.
Unfortunately, since uneducated third worlders operate under a mental framework that is at least a century behind the western world, they still see war this way and not as a series of pragmatic military campaigns with varying scope

Because he was fucking retarded, he’s always been retarded

Even someone other than MacArthur would have thought that a non-nuclear nation could not possibly stand against a nation possessing nuclear weapons.
The Chinese leadership seems to have calmly gambled that nuclear weapons would be of little effect in a vast open field battle, and that the United States lacked the justification to drop them on major cities.

Remember Mao Anying died in the Korean war.

MacArthur is such a high variance general. Some of his operations like Incheon were brilliant. Others, like being caught off guard by the Chinese counterattack and losing basically everything he'd gained are baffling bad.
