The handle needs to be small for the way it is used and if you don’t know how to hold it, it will hurt your wrist and fingies, but the way they held their swords was part of a contiguous martial tradition going back to the Bronze Age and not a mistake. The later medieval grip methods were to accommodate heavier gloves with hand protection.
