Were Ulfberts exceptionally high quality?
>>
>>65063025
for the time? yeah they were quite good.
>>
>>65063025
IIRC a couple were unusually high quality but most varied from good to average for the era.
>>
>>65063025
I have a rusted one idk how old but the handle is soooooo small dudes used to have such small hands back then
>>
>>65063025
A lot of them were, but then they started to be faked, and the fakes were not.

On the microscopic odds that you're not trolling, if you leave one of these in the ground long enough, the leather will rot away, leaving nothing but steel.
>>
>>65063038
that's how it's supposed to be. They likely had larger hands than you. You're just doing it wrong.
>>
>>65063205
>>65063284
You guys don't get it. It's not about the thickness of the handle, of course the leather has long disintegrated.

It's the length of the handle that is very short. It's doesn't fit all of my fingers.

> On the microscopic odds that you're not trolling
I live in europe in a region where the ground is full of shit like this.
Construction companies must run mandatory archeological searches before they start digging because there's so much stuff from the gallo-roman era (I worked construction).
>>
>>65063157
Finland was a hotspot for Ulfberht fakes with blade inscriptions like VBFRHRT or shit like that. It's actually pretty funny

It's a tale as old as time.

>try and fake markings on desirable object
>don't really understand the markings and get them wrong
>>
>>65063025
Good enough for people to copy the name but it saw so much use that it's effectively meaningless.
>>

Generally speaking, a lot of the historical swords that stuck around to the modern day are the higher quality examples. Either because they are literal royal relics and have been meticulously maintained, or they're just better made examples that haven't been broken down and recycled or withered away from a thousand years of rust.
>>
>>65063025
>>65063037
Keep in mind that there were +Ulfbert+s and +Ulfber+Ts with the +Ulfber+T made of better quality steel.

Yes, I do get it. I know exactly what you're talking about.
>>
>>65064289
>I live in europe in a region where the ground is full of shit like this.
okay, so?
>I live in a place where there's things!
Do you think that means you know anything about them? Of course not. So shut up retard. The Egyptians lived in a place covered in hieroglyphics and forgot their meaning long before the Arabs came and erased their culture. You don't know Latin, you don't know how to use a sword, you are not an archeologist.
>>
>>65064677
he's talking about owning one retard

>1
he does not own a an ulfbehrt sword
>2
I own paleolithic spear heads. Do I know anything about mammoth hunting?
>>
>>65064681
He’s holding it wrong. They aren’t a hammer handle, and you don’t hold them like a later medieval sword either. The handle needs to be small for the way it is used and if you don’t know how to hold it, it will hurt your wrist and fingies, but the way they held their swords was part of a contiguous martial tradition going back to the Bronze Age and not a mistake. The later medieval grip methods were to accommodate heavier gloves with hand protection.
>>
>>65064677
Seethe much?
>>
>>65064677
I never claimed I knew anything, I didn't know it was called an Ulf thing before this thread.

But I guess it's a big deal given your reaction. I'll see if I can sell it

>The later medieval grip methods were to accommodate heavier gloves with hand protection.
Medieval swords changed their hilts to your typical crucifix crossguard and a round pommel by the Carolingian era, long before even mail gloves became common, let alone anything heavier and more bulky.

They just got good at making longer swords that aren't unwieldy pieces of shit so you can swing them with the wrist and thrust with them, that's why the shit pommel went away.
>>
>>65064385
That makes sense ty
>>
>>65065539
yes, if you have an original it is very much a big deal. It's probably also illegal for you to sell it and have it.
>>
>>65066209
> Oi m8 you got a loicence for that sword?
>>
>>65066600
Yes, in his Eurofag ass country there probably are licenses for swords, and they certainly are going to have questions about the chain of custody of his incredibly rare museum piece.
>>
>>65063025
no neither were Andrea Ferrara marked blades because most of them were not made by him.

makers name becomes talesmatic, like the old running wolf marked blades
>>

oh look, a tard.

Nope.
and they certainly are going to have questions about the chain of custody of his incredibly rare museum piece.
Definately.
>>
>>65066603
I think there's a license requirement in luxembourg. And bongland has special laws for curved swords. Most of the rest just bans carrying them outdoors, which is to be expected desu.
