I'm probably going to begin carrying a Ruger SP101 in the future and I'm torn between the three sizes so I'm looking for some input. The 2.25" seems unanimously considered too small to handle well, so it's really down to the 3" and the 4.2" versions. Length doesn't seem to be a hugely limiting factor for concealment, but I can see the extra ounces making a difference. My area is a boiling hot nuclear crater at all times except from December to February, so cover garments aren't really a realistic option. Plus side is that a gun potentially peeking isn't really a panic button for most people here, even in the cities.
Do people actually buy 357 magnum revolvers for CC? I thought that was just in the movies.
>>65066305>length doesnt seem to be a hugely limiting factor for concealmentdepends on where youre concealing it.
>>65066332Doesn't seem unpopular, most talk about using .38 Special though
>>65066305I’d go with the 3 incher unless you’re doing some weird pocket carry setup. 3 inches really is optimal for .38 special, but it’s also on the cusp of VERY effective for .357 mag. The stretch from 2 to 3 inches pushes you over the point where FPS isn’t high enough to justify the extra boom.I use 154gr Federal HST .357 Mag in my Chiappa Rhino, and it’s a genuine confidence booster every time I take it to the range.
>>65066305The rare 3 inch with a real rear sight
>>65066368I thought about a pocket setup but I'm not sure. Carrying at 3'o clock is most likely what I'll do, cross-draw weirdly feels most intuitive to me as well usually
>>65066401Be mindful that .357s are weighty enough that they print pretty bad unless they’re in a pocket holster, and then you’ll need a weird one and big pockets. Falco Holsters made a good one for me, but it’s a fat boy and a 3 inch barrel would have the grip cresting my pocket rim.I’d say your 3 o’clock idea is right on the money. Lots of SP101 holsters for that.
>>65066305Sounds like AZ ahah
>>65066305I have a 3" "Wiley Clapp". How are you going to be carrying it? You most likely aren't going to get away with appendix carrying the 4.2", revolvers are a lot longer for their barrel length than semi-autos. Look at pic related, that's a Glock 34 compared to the 2.25" measured from trigger guard which is essentially the "index point" for the holster. A 3" is almost G34 territory but that can actually help with concealment due to "keel principle". 2.25" is fine for handling, it's just that 3" have better terminal performance with .38s, you get more reliable expansion with HPs and you have a bit more weight out front for recoil mitigation and a slightly longer sight radius.
>>65066401Are you more man sized or twink sized? 3 o'clock with no cover garment is tough imo
>>65067933Probably 3 o'clock IWB since I'm not confident with my pockets, I'm leaning more and more towards the 3">>650679506'0", wider torso but slimming down at the waist
>>650663053" How is this even a question?
>>65066332I have a s&w 649 in .357 but I carry that discontinued .38 federal hydro shock stuff with the round recessed in the cartridge.
>>65066332>Do people actually buy 357 magnum revolvers for CC?Why would it be an issue?
>>65069619Why did you post a .32 Mag?
>>65069623What does it matter?
>>65066332Should get .327. 3” barrel.
>>65066305I respect your taste in revolvers anon, but seriously they suck to carry.> 3 oz heavier than full sized HK VP9> more than 1/4 pound heavier than Glock 17> 5 rounds
>>65068367You’re a big guy
