For the Empire edition.

Austro-Hungarian Empire 1903 (according to barrel stamp) Man-Licker M95 from RTI.

The only place I have ever seen a mint condition Austrian service rifle is their military museum. I have no idea why they all ended up sooooo fucked.
>>
>>65067081
Not sure if this is true or not, but if I had to guess it might be be because of the countries that ended up holding on to them post-WWI and their standard for storage or care compared to more desirable rifles.
That said, there's at least a couple anons on this general with M95s in surprisingly great condition.

That tends to happen when you lose wars and need to give your gear away as war reparations, then said reparations get sent off to the fringes of the empires that defeated you to be used by people marginally smart enough to figure out how to use a can opener.

>That said, there's at least a couple anons on this general with M95s in surprisingly great condition.
Most of the nice ones were guns that stayed in the countries they originally served in (Austria, Hungary, and Bulgaria) and got refurbished. Original M.95 still in 8x50 are quite difficult to find in nice shape.
>>
>>65067857
The really nice ones went to Britain.
They got re-barrelled and sportered before being sold world wide.

Hungary used them HARD. It's difficult to find a 31m that isn't well used.

Is 4750-5000 a good price on a Russian 1895 with the inspectors marking
Unfortunately don’t have a picture of it but the gun metal looked kinda dark making me think it might’ve been reblued or something
Didn’t see an inspectors marking on the stock but I wasn’t looking as hard as possible

I have some more commercial stuff other than that one rifle.

The rifle (pictured top) is a pre-war Czech in 8x60S, optic is a 4x Optikotechna. Gun is stupid nice.
Next is a post-war 1951 Mannlicher Schoenauer in 7x57. Scope is a weaver 60B. This is a decent shooter.
Below that is a Orbendorf sport rifle (duffle cut) in 8.15x46. All matching, but more of a collector piece.
Last rifle is a pre-war Orbendorf type S factory sporter. Unfortunately it's been fucked with. Original sight removed, stock grip removed, new rear sight added.
I got it as a shooter, but also because type S rifles are kinda rare.

Here within the next month I'll be trading the Type S for a Steyr of some sort. The guy that wants it has like 200 rifles in his collection. Told me to come over and pick something out. I haven't decided if I'm going with a military or commercial steyr yet.

Damn, I didn't realize that Hungary used them that hard. I thought that with the adoption of the 35M, they would have gotten off a bit less use out of the M.95s.

Have the chance to nab a Yugo M24/47 for 300ish bones, might be able to talk them down to 250. Stock is ugly and full of cosmolene, bore is absolutely pristine though. Not sure if I want to pay for 8mm... Don't have any Mausers. Worth it, or wait for something better?

>Not sure if I want to pay for 8mm
is this a price per round or availability problem for you? cause if the price of 8mm is dissuading you than maybe dont get too deep into surp. That said, 24/47 for 300 is nice, definitely try for 250 or 275.
>>
>>65073075
Bit of both. None on the shelves locally, and it's north of $1.25/rd most places online. My 03-A3 is cheaper to feed, but it would still be neat to have. I don't have much surp, but the mechanical, old world allure of a real wood and steel fighting rifle is hard to resist.
>>
>>65073087
Well, youll need to reconcile with the price of ammo first. Is your rifle budget low as well? If not, consider waiting around for a rarer or higher quality Mauser that you take out occasionally with a small amount of 8mm you would buy on sales. Or if you are taking the cheapest possible route, than stick with the 24/47 and same on the ammo, just wait for deals or sales and take it out osccasionally.

magnaflux inspection. cover it in really fine metal powder and expose it to magnet. cracks or faults in steel create higher magnetic fields highlighting the cracks. really common in industrial applcations, also popular with engine guys for testing steel engine blocks for cracks. can be used with a developer and UV light to see it better.

I've been trying to find a 1903A3 for years but all the boomers are demanding $2k for them. I love my plain 1903 but kind of want an A3 because of the rear sight. What all does "reclaimed" entail? Are these the ones that have the newly manufactured receivers or are they original with just a new barrel and stock?

I'm very tempted anon.

The original machine had a base plate of pre-famulated amulite surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two spurving bearings were in a direct line with the panametric fan. The latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic marzlevanes, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented.

They’re reactivated drill rifles. The mag cutoff was welded in the “off” position, the bolt face welded shut and firing pin tip clipped. The barrels were plugged and tack-welded to the receiver ring to prevent easy unscrewing. My concern with the recent CMP Expert A3s is that I have seen at least two with new Minelli stocks with insufficient clearance around the receiver tang leading to chipping or splitting at the wrist of the stock. No armorer should have ever approved those for sale.

Have any of you all moved your collection across the country before? I’m having to relocate from the Midwest to Phoenix for work and have about 20 long guns that need to make the trip with me. Not to mention the safe and ammo crates and boxes and such. I was planning on just keeping them all with me in the trunk of my car instead of in the moving truck with everything else, but I’ll still be staying in hotels a few times since I won’t be able to do the drive all in a day.
>>
>>65081483
Tuck as many guns into your personal vehicle as possible and leave the ammo and other heavy stuff in the moving truck. If you can't fit everything, you should be fine to leave lower value long guns with the moving company. No pistols if it can be helped.
Don't tell a living soul you have these items in your vehicle and don't be retarded while driving. Plan your hotel stops ahead of time so you aren't in the middle of a major city when you need to sleep.
Do everything in your power to minimize the chances you get stopped by police or stay in an area where car break ins happen and it should be an easy trip.

More than likely the moving company can be trusted if you aren't being scammed by illegals, but it is wise to box things up discreetly.

Make absolutely sure you have the guns in cases that you can put a lock on. Even if they are soft cases with the shittiest $5 lock you can buy. If you don't and are stopped by police while in a state/jurisdiction that requires guns to be locked up while transported, your life is basically over.

>>
>>65081641
Yeah what I did first time. I think that's it. Firing pins aren't ready yet so I'll have to order that later. Once stuff gets here I'll make a 3d print reweld jig for it.

Checked. Yeah. That pretty much killed any enthusiasm I had for them. I know the CMP are a reputable organization but they sound sketchy. I was still able to qualify at 100 yds range with my vanilla M1903 when I took it to Talladega, so it's a "good enough" shooter for my purposes.

Thanks, that’s pretty much my plan. The only problem state I have to drive through is Illinois and the law requires firearms to be unloaded and in the trunk (or otherwise inaccessible). I’ll probably have to buy some extra cases. Might take all the bolts out/slides off and keep them in my backpack as extra insurance against cops being dicks.
I’ll be planning out my trip so that I stay the night in decent areas, also I drive a very unassuming car so I think I’ll be ok.

Not guns but this is the closest to a military gear thread that exists. I found a couple pieces of old surplus equipment for next to free recently (most cleaned up very easily) and this popped up while I searched through junk. I had to witness and hold this horror, now so do you! I'm 99% sure it's a WWII era German shovel and not a repro. The nut is made of some kind of fabric-filled phenolic resin. Someone used it to mix what I can only figure is concrete and left it harden on the shovel. I'm starting to barely be able to see what I think is a maker's mark. I'm cleaning it little by little; I'm hoping vinegar works as good on concrete as guys show online. The nut won't even start to move. =(

Very cool! Good on you for taking care of it. I think it's post war, the WW2 era ones were straight and didn't have the locking nut. The good news is that vinegar will eventually work and likely even on the nut. Also, being able to lock the blade (?) at 90° makes it much easier to dig with.
I have one and the handel comes lose sometimes and I have to smash the rivet down, but other than that, I really like it. I have a post war East German one, which had a straight blade, but I can find it anywhere.

Evergreen advice, but definitely a feather I'll put in my cap. I hear they are pretty mild shooting. The closest thing I have is a PPK in .380 and I'm hoping it will be a bit more mild than that. Even if it isn't, I still think I'm going to go for it.

Thanks anon! I'm using vinegar as Backyard Ballistic's rust remover just wouldn't touch the concrete for better or worse. After the vinegar I'm hoping to use rust remover, but it and 3-in-1 wouldn't get the nut moving in the past. Luckily there's a metal part of the nut so I can get something on there to clamp and wrench on to slowly shimmy the nut back and forth to free it. I also found an American shovel, a WWI American mess kit knife, and some other stuff. Minimal effort required to clean all of them with the rust remover at hand; I probably spent more on that than the surplus, lol. Some tools were unexpectedly surplus (they're otherwise generic looking old tools save for the US stamp) so I have to wonder if some of the rusty yard tools I left behind that others bought weren't actually WWII surplus field tools with the paint worn off and a heavy layer of rust applied. Various full size mattocks (not mattock-picks), for example. Just too dirty to tell, especially when I didn't suspect they might be surplus.

finding out that specifically the exact gun you bought was manufactured during the great peepee poopoo shortage and automatically the least desirable F- variant (you will literally be laughed at by boomers and banned if you post it) despite this fact not being mentioned once in the 12 books on the subject is part of the fun of buying a 100 year old gun.

Okay I'm going to rinse it off and give it a rest for tonight. My rust remover is diluted like 3:1 so it goes slow. I'm slowly starting to see a maker but I'd really like the rust to basically smear off rather than me scrub it off; the rust remover barely touches good metal if at all so it will do less harm than I will with mechanical removal. This is the only thing I've broken out the #0000 steel wool for with few exceptions; I want to be gentle. Interestingly all the descriptions say "blued" IIRC but mine is painted with a very thin, fine, and even layer of black paint. Can't find a complete list of makers marks unfortunately and some are text only descriptions.
>>
>>65085335
It's looking good. How did you get the concrete off? Mine is painted and the handel was lacquered. I can't see a makers mark, but it may be painted over.
>>
>>65085547
>How did you get the concrete off?
Vinegar. Might've put a single squirt of Dawn in the water as well. I looked it up on YouTube and was surprised that vinegar was the solution to my problems for once; I've long since stopped using it for rust removal as that rust remover typically does the job for all dirt and rust (and fast, without removing markings), but also removes bluing and paint, same as vinegar. Bluing is just rust with more oxygen. Back to concrete removal, the vinegar softened the concrete and allowed removal with #1 steel wool and a brass brush and I'd get another layer off each hour or so. Take out, dawn powerwash spray on, scrub gently, rinse off, back in for an hour. The long brass brush from the Harbor Freight 6pk kit works well (SKU: 69526). There's a few tutorials on YouTube that go over concrete removal, mostly from construction and concrete tools. I also used a shitty old flat faced round punch as a manual needle scaler to get the stubborn stuff off so the shovel wouldn't need to sit in the vinegar any longer than required as it tends to round off details IIRC. As for the rust remover, it's 100g citric acid powder/40gr washing soda powder/1000mL water/squirt of Dawn. It is on par with Evaporust, just way cheaper. I typically dilute it because I don't have a ton of citric acid and I need like 3 gallons of it. I've diluted it 2:1, maybe even 3:1 and it works fine. Full power it's super fast. Do it water, citric acid, stir well, slowly add washing soda and stir. Have a lot of room above the water line. It will fizz and rise like it's boiling. After it's all added, continue stirring well until all is dissolved. Add soap LAST or you will have a foamy mess!
>I can't see a makers mark [on mine], but it may be painted over.
Mine seems to be a very shallow mark compared to what I see online. This is the first hint I've even seen of it so I wouldn't doubt even a light coat of paint would fill some maker's marks in easily.

>How are you going to finish it once you get it completely stripped?
I'm leaving the metal bare for now. So hard to get a thin coat of paint like what was on it as I don't have a paint gun and paint available, though I may have something if I dig. Handle will be getting a clean with soap and water to get dirt freed and then a canned wax rub to protect it. Use anything with a solvent, not turtle wax. Big mistake on my last shovel was turtle wax; every pit and scratch has this white-green chalky look which takes a lot of work to scrub off with a soft brush and it takes forever to dry before you can hand buff it. The cool bakelite nut will be something I concentrate on when waxing and buffing to a shine by hand; that stuff comes out beautifully when done right. I'll try to use blue shop towels to limit lint.
>Is the nut loose?
No, unfortunately. I might PB Blaster the nut and let it sit a week. I love/hate the smell, halfway to mint/turpentine and halfway to mothballs. It does work, though. I just hope it's rust and not concrete in the threads. I've hit it with a wrench to shock it a couple times as well as twisting with a channel lock but the metal ring is just a collar/grommet shaped piece that the bakelite is molded into and through, so it may not be as strong as I thought.
>bayonets
I get them so rarely due to price but I did get a Panasonic (National/Matsushita) made Arisaka bayonet finally. And maybe I should see if I can wax my VZ beaver barf bayonet; bet it'd look nice if I did and it'd be better protected.

I got a great deal on a japanese browning 1895 (repro) and i figured you guys would be more familiar with the ammo than others. Yes, I know I should have done some more research on the ammo availability first but it was given to me in a trade.
Pic unrelated I dont have a photo of the 1895 yet.
>>
>>65091490
Your cheapest option’ll be to look online. Krag ammo at a minimum from a good source is around $1.50 per round without tax and shipping. In a regular gun store, that usually jumps to $2-4 per round. That’s if you can find it in a regular gun store in your area.
>>
>>65091503
Thanks.
I looked at a few online. It would seem that i can get a box of "hornady custom sp" for 44 for a box of 20. Not sure if thats what I want.
I found some hsm cowboy loads for less but it was only in stock on scam sites.
I would prefer some lead round nose bullets and not some pissin hot 30-06 level custom hunting rounds.
I plan on calling a couple of local places to ask them about it.
I have a few specialty old/surplus firearm stores within a few hours of me.
Figured id ask about it here first.

That's a late one, you rarely see anything later than 1893 for the 88s. Has yours been turked at all?

Good practices for after your move is done:
I didn't want anyone in my old shitty apartment complex knowing I had guns, so I transported my rifles in old guitar cases instead. Great if you have anti-gun neighbors. Hotels with monumentally gay policies also won't question your guitar cases either.
Get your windows tinted if AZ is cool with that, and keep a large surp wool blanket in the back seat to cover stuff up during range/show travels requiring stops. It'll also prevent you from getting hypothermia if you are ever unfortunate enough to have your car break down on a wicked cold night and a tow is hours away. This has all worked for me, along with basic OPSEC stuff like not having gun-related stickers on my vehicle.

Any tips on getting my hands on a SMLE No. 1 MK III in good condition? I've never looked for an old collectible rifle before.
Do I just trawl gun broker websites 'til I happen across a good catch? I'm trying searches at various websites using different variations of "SMLE No. 1 MK III" or "Lee-Enfield model 1 mark 3" and so on.
What should I look for when checking out a potential buy? I figure YouTube has some useful videos on this part, but I figured I'd ask you guys too.
>>

No 1 MkIII are pretty common at major gunshows and are typically not as badly boomer priced. there are lots of bubbad ones, but intact ones are easy to come by.

Avoid gunbroker as a general rule. But keep an eye on Liberty Tree, they pop up often there if you have to resort to online.

I got one as well. Couldn't pass it up for the price. Really smooth DA trigger and a good overall shooter. Grip angle feels a little awkward so I'll probably sit on it a few years and flip it later once the surplus dries up.

Be sure to remove the magazine disconnect so that you can use S&W 59 series mags. I got some for 10 bucks each.

It's definitely the latest Gew 88 I've ever owned let alone seen in a while. Although I've heard there are 1897 Spandau's out there. Mine is purely a South American import; likely never been to Turkey. It is complete and just needs a few more parts cleaned up, however, the beautiful tiger stripe stock has some challenging cracks I'll need to repair. Once that project is done I'll be moving on to my 1889 Spandau Gew 88. I recently re-caught the Gew 88 bug after not owning any for nearly 20 years.

Learn about the small details of the SMLE and how they changed over time as pattern variants and upgrades were implemented. For instance, you say you want a Mk.III but you posted a pic of a Mk.I*. Ian Skennerton's Lee-Enfield book is very thorough on this but it is expensive. You might watch C&Rsenal's series of videos on the Lee-Enfield's service up to and through WW1. Use the references cited in the video as well. Lurk the trader section of Gunboards or post a WTB in the appropriate section.
>>
>>65093343
Got the magazine disconnect out.

It's very easy. You need a punch set and needle nose pliers.
>Remove slide.
>Punch trigger axis pin out 1/3 of the way to the left.
>DO NOT punch it all the way out. You'll have to reassemble the trigger components if you do that and it's going to be far more complicated.
>Magazine disconnect is a lever sitting inside the right side of the frame, projecting into the magazine well.
>It needs to be lifted upwards. This is tricky because if you just pull on it with a screwdriver it likes to wedge itself along the internal slide rails.
>Needle nose pliers are better for lifting it straight upwards. I used a small adjustable wrench for the same effect.
>Punch trigger axis pin back in.
>Reattach slide.
>Function check.

The trigger actually feels good with and without the disconnect. Not really any difference there. The major advantage is being able to shoot with no magazine inserted and to be able to use much cheaper S&W 59 magazines. The ones I have don't activate the slide hold open every time but they are cheap-ass Ram-Lines from the 1990s. I definitely recommend everyone who gets a 30M to do this, since it's easy, reversible and there is no downside.

Not to dissuade you, but if you intend on shooting it, be aware that ammo is a bit more expensive for these old guns. .303 British isn't the worst in the world, but you are probably going to want to look into reloading. At the very least, try to buy boxer primed ammo and save your brass and just be thankful you aren't into Japanese rifles.

Price aside, 7.7 jap and 6.5 jap is still in modern production and readily available online.

Scarcity and price definitely dissuade a lot of folks from surp collecting, but for many of the basics the ammo is still readily available, price being the only major factor.

Yes well remembered, I've not posted about it for over a year since I ran into problems with chambering .410 and I had a baby so never got round to fixing it. .410 has thicker brass than 8mm mauser so the extractor won't slip over it, which explains why the old one was broken

>>
>>65098858
Honestly the Arisaka and it's variants is pretty hard to beat in general it's essentially a better Mauser.
Overall the Carcano isn't a bad rifle especially for Italy since they were broke. That said the major downside was the magazine and en bloc clips. Which they fixed with the Type I, but for some odd reason never put on their own rifles.
>>
>>65101339
It was cost. When Japan was negotiating the order with Italy, There were two options for the magazine/receiver. 350 liras each for a rifle with a Carcano magazine system with bloc clips or 400 liras each for a mauser style magazine system just like the Type 38.
Japan was of course willing to pay for such a great upgrade but there is no way Italy could afford a 15% cost increase on every rifle they tried to procure for their own army.
>>
>>65101339
>it's essentially a better Mauser.
Is this just the
>Japane thing
Meme? Because If you have ever held one next to a K98 or m/96 you might change your mind. The 1903 Springfield is pretty much the ultimate expression of the Mauser in a military service rifle.
I mean, the Arisaka is a great gun, but even early war models are a bit unrefined.

Unironically sold my 99 last month, for unrelated reasons. That said the arisaka action is way stronger than people think, even the last ditches were like that too.
That said every rifle goes through trials and is pretty clunky in the beginning. For fuck sake how many revisions did the 1903 had to the rear sight.
>>
>>65101440
>even the last ditches were like that too.
NTA but while yes the arisaka action has retarded strength the last ditch variations could not handle the same amount of firing that the early war ones could.
The metallurgy and stock material quality had simply fallen off a cliff and yeah you can still use it effectively but its service life will be majorly shorter than its early war counterparts

It's really only exceptional in the machining fit and finish allowing for easy interchangeability of parts. The Mauser 98, especially with the M1910 modifications is stronger and better at handling gas leakage and the Japanese T38 is retard-strong.

Not bad at all. IDK how old you are, but a good pair of glasses goes a long way after a certain age. I think rifle is definitely doing its part and all you need is to focus on a consistent vertical hold. I am extremely confident you can get them all in the black by the end of your next range trip.

I dont blame them too much. At that same show I picked up a Type 38 and the boomer said "thats a nice type 99 you got there". I corrected him and said, this is a type 38 (there was 0 doubt, it was a type 38). He then says, "nope, see its got the 2 holes those are Type 99s". I shrugged and put it down. I know way to many based boomers in my life that random retarded gunshow boomers dont phase me, and I dont rely on them solely as my source of surp.

The inability of people to correctly identify rifles with their model designation written right on top is truly baffling.

I am also the trench anon so here is the update. Ive started digging the slight offshoot that will go to the pillbox site. A tree came down recently where its going to go, so im going to need to cut it up before I go any further. Most just a digging and removing rocks kind of day

Well, there happened to be a gun show in Phoenix over the weekend.
I went to see if I could find an SMLE Mk.III.
Lo and behold, I found one!
I've catalogued all the immediately visible stamps and marks.
I also found a neat PDF by the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum that explains said markings.
I haven't disassembled it yet - I need to do more research!

Now I need to get some stripper clips and a box of British .303.
I also need to get a Pattern 1907 bayonet, so home invaders can be met with a bayonet charge.

Alright anon you convinced me. I ordered 2 boxes of Canadian .303 ammo. I’ll shoot at least 1 box and report back. Unfortunately it’ll probably be a few weeks until I can do so. Work is going to eat up much of my time for the first 3 weeks of May.

>>65104255
Good job, anon. You gonna find a new handguard for it?

>>65110309
Congrats, anon. Enjoy it. Enfields are always nice to shoot with their nice sights, decent triggers, and smooth bolts.

What years are the 36s? A MAS 36 is on my list, but I’m being picky and want a pre war rifle. Also I’m not hunting real hard for one at this time. I wouldn’t mind a post war rifle if it was really nice and the price was right.

does your m1903s front sight post hood obstruct half your front sight post, like mine does?

I was offered an original colt model navy from the civil war, guy asks 1800 eurobucks for it.
how much would a gun like this be in the us?

Austria sold Lorenz rifles to the confederacy btw., even before Hitler we did what we could to keep kikes and niggers down, lol.

Maybe a tiny bit at the bottom, but if it's not bent the sight hood should be sitting pretty snug on the sight base.

Pretty much what >>65115364 said. There’s dozens of different surplus I could see myself purchasing, but nowadays I’m basically an opportunistic buyer. If a good deal pops up on a rifle or pistol I’d like to have, I’ll snatch it up. I don’t really search for anything in particular anymore.

Recent news from the ATF.
1140-AA91: Update to Proscribed Countries for Import Restrictions - NPRM
>The rule also proposes to remove the list of former Soviet countries from which ATF currently denies applications to permanently import most firearms and ammunition, retaining only the Russian Federation as a proscribed country of origin for these imports.

Hopium?
>>
>>65118116
Does this mean Mosin's, SKS's and various combloc ammo is coming?
>>
>>65118116
Blackpill: What is there to get from these countries that hasn't been consumed in Ukraine? at best its going to be full auto AK-47s/similar guns we can't have as parts kits or a nugget wave with 200% scalping tax applied.

New surplus ammo might be a silver lining but are shitholes like Kyrgyzstan even willing to part with it?
>>
>>65118116

I really want one and think it deserves it. Actual complete upper hand guards are like 80$. Think this one deserves it for it’s went though and how it held up though.

mine ostructs like half of the front sight post. it wobbles a bit. gotta tighten it up maybe.

does the left one on your pic have an aftermarket front sight, broader and taller? i have this on my swedes and swiss, because i see shit with the thin original front sight blades& they shoot high.
>>
>>65118355
>does the left one on your pic have an aftermarket front sight, broader and taller
You mean on the right? It's a reproduction of the USMC "No.10" sight set. It's a 0.1" wide blade and circular aperture. It brings the battle sight zero from 547yds down to 200yds.

This works really well for collecting.

I went to the Tulsa gunshow with $4k in my pocket. I didn't really buy any big items, just magazines and odds and end. Nothing really blew my socks off that I didn't already have.

It's nice to be able to just have that freedom. When you get fixated on a specific rifle you get obsessive and end up jumping on raw deals. In the end, you'll know that a good deal like it will come back around.

This isn't always the case though, I was/am really interested in sport mausers, including Tyrolean mausers. At the time I checked gunbroker and found like 3 Tyrolean mausers up on auction and thought "oh cool these aren't as rare as I thought, I'll look out for a good one". The rifles seemed to disappear from the face of the earth and years go by before I even see another.

I was like “what? No way.” Turns out you aren’t lying.

Do you have a C&R? Get a drill rifle from J&G sales. Then you’ll have handguards and an original magazine, too. I have 2 spare SMLE magazines from drill rifles and they both work perfectly in mu 1917 BSA and 1941 Lithgow.
