how do I learn more about firearms? I'm just getting into it and I'm interested in guns but I want to know how to get started in learning stuff about it, like different companies or models or something.
>>
Go to a gun store and look at the stuff there. I would begin by researching the guns you find most interesting and branch out from there

Go to a gun range and rent a gun. If they have a no singles policy pay for an instructor / class and shoot a few guns. Don't buy anything right away but figure out what you like.

Or dont get into firearms at all, it's becoming expensive and depressing in alotta ways.
>>
Just watch every Forgotten Weapons video and go from there.

to be honest anon my experience is that this is kind of an invite only hobby, you get way more bang for your buck shooting with friends who already have guns since you can test easier and ask them direct questions. renting and videos are good but there is a lot to learn not just in the shooting, but in proper maintenance, laws, etc. that an existing gun owner can just give you quick rundowns on, especially on range days/hunting/plinking trips

I'm okay in that department, my grandfather and uncles are avid shooters and do it as a hobby. I'm honestly getting into it cause I wanna join in

unfortunately I have no gun stores in my area goddamn shitty town

well there you go, hopefully they passed down their knowledge to their kids. hope you're on good terms with cousins. the best way to learn is to do, you simply are going to get so much more field experience by going in more range/hunting trips with different guns than just bingewatching garand thumb all day

On youtube:
Forgotten weapons, Bloke on the Range, C&Rsenal, capandball for history, BotR has alright videos on how to use guns as well.

Larry Potterfield (fundamentals of gunsmithing/care of weapons), Mark Novak (more in depth gunsmithing), rakumprojects, Cabbage6015 (good in depth videos on technicals of firearms) are good technical channels.

Type56_Ordnance_Dept ("Type 56: The Story of China's Army") is a reasonable history of guns channel, not always 100% technically accurate (History first, guns second) but provides interesting context on the use of guns, their development and cultural impact.

Learning about firearms is all about what you are specifically interested in learning and going down rabbitholes, you have to be curious. A lot of gun information still isn't online and is often just outright wrong. Pick your niche and delve into it.

If you want to learn to shoot you have to go shooting, read a manual on marksmanship fundamentals and practice them, you will get better. Saying that as someone who has spent far more time learning about guns "academically" than practically.

start playing a few realistic, modern fps games to familiarize yourself with the various weapons currently in use, watch films about shooting people and note the type of weapons being used, then look up the guns that catch your eye on youtube. start with glocks, they're the best handguns of all time and any retards here trying to tell you otherwise don't understand firearms and think guns are fashion accessories to catch other men's eyes to start conversations over.

Read this book. It's out of copyright so you can read it free online. It covers the history of guns from the invention of gunpowder up until the 20th century. It covers how guns were made, what they were used for, how they work internally, how gunpowder works, primers, etc. It shows how guns work inside.
When you done with that read The Machine Gun by Chinn. That's 5 volumes; it is also freely available on PDF. That explains how modern auto-loading actions work.

Very good advice here. Especially the detail about how "a lot of gun information still isn't online and is often wrong". The internet is good for discussing modern guns, and it's great because a lot of classic works like picrel are easily available online. Wikipedia isn't perfect but it's worth reading when you're a noob. But there's a lot of stuff that's tied up in books that are still in copyright but not cool/recent enough for the internet to be discussing it. Depending on what your interests end up being you might find yourself spending a lot of time at libraries or tracking down out-of-print books.

Two other books that are well worth reading are Hatcher's Notebook by Julian Hatcher, and Sixguns by Elmer Keith.

you're not smart

Just look things up. One thing leads to the next.

>you're not smart
Correct. But I'm trying to fix that, and I'm sharing the best sources I know.

First get a sense of what aspects of the hobby you're interested in.
Books like >>65083895 and youtube channels like >>65083881 are good if you want to learn history and the like. Paul Harrell's youtube and Ben Stoeger's books will be of more use if you want to get some all-around familiarity with practical use and then spec into being an accurate shooter using competitions as a tool to hone yourself. There's other sources if you want to get proficient and gunsmithing and reloading ammo, etc. Ronin's grips runs a pretty good blog for getting a sense of the logistics of the industry.

The paths for shooting the shit with autists online vs making a living in the business vs being a proficient shooter with pistol, long range rifle, trap shooting, etc., all have different directions you'd want to go in.
