I'm trying to figure out the best deer load for .30-30 for very close range shots, as the family back 40 is extremely densely wooded.Every article I have read just talks about the loads that extend maximum range.Pic related in that I have that same rifle. Thanks guys
Why worry? You can pick any random box of .30-30 and it will most likely be effective for your needs.
>>65086530This. Normally I'd say focus on accuracy as "close range optimization" isn't a thing while accuracy is always nice. But at this close a distance it doesn't matter, even shit-tier ammo that groups at 4 MOA would be plenty good enough for hunting deer at sub-50-yards. Don't overthink things.
>>65086530>>65086543Oh definitely, regarding the accuracy portion. My longest available shot is probably 60 yards; around 35 yards most other views from my tree stand.I figure regular ass green and yellow box would work, I just wanna be damn sure it'll drop.Traditionally I've used slugs from my old 870, and I'm used to deer dropping like a sack of hammers...I'd keep on with the 870, but I've recently gotten my late grandfather's .30-30 and I want to honor his memory by hunting with it
>>65086524Deer are very small animals. 30-30 has similar performance to 7.62x39 and .300 BLK. Trust me when I say you'll be fine with any general hunting load. A couple of weeks ago I asked my neighbor what ammo he used (he has nicer guns than me), and he liked to use Federal 150-grain bonded SP ammo; I asked him why he doesn't use that Hornady LeverEvolution ammo that every lever-action hunter fanboys over nowadays, and he said that his ammo worked fine so he didn't feel the need to upgrade.
>>65086554So you're asking about bullet choice? any kind of semi-expanding or controlled expanding soft point will be good. Don't get varmint bullets or anything designed for "big game". Fortunately most .30-30 will be geared for what you want. Green/Yellow box Remington Core-Lokt is fine. There's no need to shell out for premium ammo at that distance.
>>65086524most 30-30 hunting cartridges are already optimized for sub-100yd shots
I like the hammer downs by federal. Also I've never killed a deer
>>65086524consider a semi auto 12 gague slug gun
>>65086524Just anything with a good hunting bullet will be perfect
>>65086524>Sub 75yrd .30-30 loads170 grain on top of 10 grains of Titegroup150 grain on top of 9.5 grains of TitegroupPut it in GRT, should be around 1500fps. Effectively a .357 magnum.
>>65086554>I just wanna be damn sure it'll dropHilar shot
>>65086956Gotta love the anons who makes self-defeating suggestions that could have been avoided by being able to read and scroll through a thread.tldr: >I have traditionally used slugs. >My grandpa died. His .30-30 is now my .30-30. >I want to honor his memory by hunting with it.
>>65086524Just pick something and do a 50 yard zero with it gooner. Distances you’re shooting are still gonna hit the dinner plate and you don’t need to adjust point of aim based on ammo
>>65086524https://hodgdonreloading.com/rldc/ select .30-30 subsonic, there's some load data for 175gr that would probably do what you want. Can't find 175gr .308 or .309 bullets? 170gr Hornady FP should do what you want with those powder charges.
>>65087207OP is definitely not a handloader
>>65087242If you're on /k/ and not at least watching reloading vids to learn, you're unironically NGMI.
>>65087277Poorcel cope
>>65086524147gr .308
>>65087524it's very Indian coded to take pride in paying more for an inferior product
>>65086524Could look at some monolithics. Cutting Edge has .30-30 loads using their 135gr raptors at 2500fps that will definitely drop a deer within 75 yards. Hornady has a somewhat more conventional 140gr monoflex that would also do the job, but idk if they offer it in factory loads
>>65087524My .308 handloads cost 2 dollars a round, nigger. Anyone that tells you reloading is for saving money does not reload
>>65087592>>65087594The duality of man.
>>65087597and both are simultaneously true
>>65087597Not really, we are kind of saying the same thing just in different ways. Hand loading gets you something better than anything you could buy, period. You can get something better than anything you can buy and cheaper too, or you can get something better than you could buy and also more expensive. Just depends
>>65087242Well if he's asking about specific loads and looking for data I'm going to assume he wants to develop something that isn't off the shelf.
>>65087277I handload. But I'm thinking if OP wants to knock a deer over sub 100 yards and needs help with the bullet, he's not a reloader
>>65086524>short-range deer loadSomething like picrel might be suitable.
>>65087594>Anyone that tells you reloading is for saving money does not reloadThis is a true statement.
