Aren't we at the point now where we can shit out UGV IFVs or tankettes and spam em like FPVs? What's the hold up?
>>65087686Are we really retvrning to coupled bogies?
>>65087686>Aren't we at the point now where we can shit out UGV IFVs or tankettes and spam em like FPVs?no, nobody can afford shit
>retvrn to Renaissance heavy PMC companiesTake the Ukrainian push recently. Blitz heavy FPV drone waves - like rolling WW1 artillery - and storm troopers behind until you acquire the desired terrain. Anti-Drone detection and SAA, heavy mortar carriages, Boston Dynamics flame thrower dogs for hardened points. You'd think they'd at least have drone mule tankettes for mountain warfare, more ammo, more sustainment.
>>65087686We've been in a stopgap phase regarding drones since the start of the war in Ukraine and it probably wont end until 5-15 years from now when military's begin fielding actual defense systems and doctrine to counter drones. Once that's done, drones will remain but their extremely disruptive status that they hold now will be drastically reduced. Keep in mind one of the big reasons why drones are so disruptive is because they're cheap.Attempting to mass produce UGV's with dubious or poorly defined tasks and purposes for them to achieve in the current state where they could potentially be hard countered in the near future that would also cost astronomically more money compared to cheap FPV drones with plastic explosives duct taped to them doesn't make a lot of sense, hence why you don't see them. Also, Commanding via RC or fiber optic of a UGV is very different than an FPV drone and just saying "what about AI" is not a solution for the same reason why we still don't have actual working self driving cars. It's one thing to program an AI to fly a drone directly from point A to B. That becomes exponentially more difficult when said AI has to maneuver across terrain and deal with obstacles. And as previously stated; say you do have UGV's. What do you use them for? The concept of using them as cannon fodder when they cost tens of thousands, and most likely hundreds of thousands of dollars per unit wont sit well with people.
>>65087686>What's the hold up?Western defense companies have to design them to be over budget and under delivered.Meanwhile Ukraine is pumping out smaller, cheaper unmanned aerial and ground vehicles like it's nothing.
>>65087719Yeah much as I want to get mad, you're right. The mission requirements for these things will be a lot different when they're not facing off against untrained, poorly equipped, freshly raped mobiks
>>65087721More like techonolgy improvements.Wireless comms improved a lot these past 5yrs.
>>65087721They also tend to be hit with project bloat inevitably as well which just slows everything down to a confused, lumbering crawl as someone will want in air-drop and amphibious operations capable with coffee dispenser and proof against extinction event solar flares.Ukraine understands, these probably have a limited life, they're not going to be putting in a vast logistics chain for much more than basics and consumable wear items. Because it'll get shot, blown up or something long before that becomes an issue so if it breaks, get another one. That's not being wasteful in a tactical situation either, you want to keep that perimeter secured and press up to take ground to secure it with a remote system there's always a cost and its better that its one of these than a fireteam of dudes.
>The future is war thunder/ world of tanks players piloting UGV tanks and fighting opposing UGV pilots for stretches of bombed out lifeless land.
i still dont get why they cant just hit it with a shotgun. a lot of these drones are slow as shit.
>>65087686>Aren't we at the point now where we can shit out UGV IFVs or tankettes and spam em like FPVs? What's the hold up?No but you can use USVs to spam FPVs, witness this forward air defence platform by Ukraine.Probably guarding against Black Sea approaches to Odesa.
>>65088123Is this a variant of the Magura or Sea Baby?
>>65087686million $ per copy "spam"Unit cost US$295,000 (civilian variant)
soon
>>65088130>Is this a variant of the Magura or Sea Baby? You tell me, it's a bote
>>65087686Incompetents like Kegsbreath at the top.
>>65087719>stop gapThere is already one role that will not go away and needs to be done 100% by UGVs and it's logistics. At this point it's just institutional inertia as to why everybody isn't producing a basic threaded/wheeled UGV body you can then adapt by adding mission modules and decide whether you want it to be remote operated or start adding autonomy as available.
>>65087721More about project bloat and the politicians hating funding iterative programs instead of buying the best mature system available.
>>65088131That honestly is very cheap aint it? How much does a M113 cost?
>>65087689Bogies are genuinely great for small and light vehicles. Frees up hull space and makes maintenance and repairs very easy.
>>65088269Because shit gets stuck and needs to be pulled out. Militaries tend to operate in areas rougher than an Amazon warehouse and if you're adding people to the unmanned logistic vehicle so they can unfuck it once it inevitably fucks itself, you could have just made a normal truck.>but what about if we just fly over the obstacles?Drones have shit carrying capacity and US is toying with the idea of unmanned cargo helicopters.
